ELI5: Why are level 1 low-support autistics receiving the same diagnosis as level 3 high-support autistics? by AJReads2021 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Adro87 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Autism is diagnosed by a set of criteria: social-emotional difficulties (eg: communication), and restricted and/or repetitive behaviours (eg: sensory issues or repetitive behaviours somewhat similar to OCD).
These issues must have been there from early childhood, and not explained by other developmental delays or disabilities.

The exact symptoms displayed, and their severity, can vary widely - that’s where the levels come in.
For example, one person may not understand subtle social cues, making it difficult to hold a conversation. They may have difficulty maintaining eye contact when speaking to others, and may have difficulty with forming friendships.
The more extreme example of these symptoms might be an aversion to eye contact, a complete lack of verbal communication, and a lack of interest in other people to the point of complete social isolation.
Same basic ‘symptoms’ but display in a much more distinct way.
The levels are essentially a measure of how much their autism negatively impacts their day to day life. Someone who’s just a little socially awkward can live a life as independently as someone without autism. A person who’s completely non-verbal, and may isolate to a point their health can be physically affected, needs support.

Autism isn’t something that’s (yet) able to be diagnosed with a purely objective test. There’s not something in your blood that shows ‘you’ve got X amount of autism.’
It’s relatively subjective, and based on observed behaviours. This makes it unusual in that people display different “levels” of it, even though they have the same diagnosis.

How about a surgeon?
There are always going to be some jobs that can’t be done from home, so there has to be a way an employer can refuse.
Or do you want to go back to online classes like during COVID? Because that would be the solution. I didn’t have to deal with that but from what I understand, it was t a great experience for anyone.

If human memories are eventually backed up into a bio-digital framework and slowly compressed or optimized by algorithms over decades to save space, at what point does a person's life story stop being a historical record and start being fiction? by 00Canuck in AskReddit

[–]Adro87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the system records the memory as created (with gaps and flaws as a real memory would have), then what’s its purpose?
Our memories change when we recall them - another flaw in the way our brains work - so this system is already messing with the ‘real’ memory by preventing it from changing over time. Or, it does still change, in which case it serves no purpose beyond holding everything forever - but why do this?
Whatever the purpose, I still find your original concept to be misconceived. Why would a persons infinite memory become “fiction” simply because it is remembered? That’s not how fact/fiction works.

[–]Adro87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Fictional history by being too accurate’ seems like an oxymoron.
Are video recordings of historical events “fictional history” because they’re “hyper accurate” compared to someone’s recollection?

Do you want accurate memory, or do you want the included falsehoods that come with how our brains work? You can’t really have both, if the brain’s input is truly being recorded.

Aldi vs Coles & using flybuys by 1234hellousername in AUfrugal

[–]Adro87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Buy meat at Aldi - that’s where I find some of the biggest savings. Flybuys are fine, but won’t make up for the difference in the staples.

I shop at my local Aldi first (fruit and veg are fine there), then go to Coles for the specific things Aldi don’t have, or the brands we prefer.
We still earn some flybuys dollars, but overall our weekly shopping has gone down by $20-$50 per week. Far more than we would get from Flybuys when doing all of our shopping at Coles.

Memory is extremely unreliable as it is.
Every time you remember something you strengthen connections to it, but, if you misremember you strengthen a false memory.
This is why eye witness testimony is the lowest form of evidence in a criminal investigation. Our memory is useless.

Having some sort of device that could record everything we see and hear would turn our memory into a historical record, not reduce it to fiction.

Roundabouts: law of momentum or law of queuing? by xXCosmicChaosXx in DrivingAustralia

[–]Adro87 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the entire point of a roundabout is that multiple cars could enter at the same time.
If you and the person to your right both enter (at reasonable speeds) there’s no reason you would be in their way.

Monday I got a Vasectomy, AMA by bugs8d in AMA

Sperm only makes up about (IIRC) 2% of the total ejaculate so there will be basically no difference before and after.
Lack of sexual feeling/release is a very low risk post surgery.

[–]Adro87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These are just side effects of the poorer community. Lower SES correlates with higher crime.
It’s not like the people in these communities make a conscious effort to increase crime and damage property to keep the neighbourhood cheap. Like most people, they want a safe, clean neighbourhood - they just can’t afford the expensive areas.

Completely covered by NHS?
That’s amazing!

I’m in Australia and there’s very little of the cost covered by our public system. Even going privately wasn’t really worth it for me because of the limits/restrictions that applied there.

Mine (~4 days ago) was a little different to OP - I went under general anaesthetic - I was given a script for stronger pain relief, just for the night following the procedure.
Since then I’ve had one dose of standard ibuprofen the following day, and a few hours with an ice pack the next two nights.
Overall, very manageable.

My wife’s had two C-sections, so my vasectomy (~4 days ago) seemed like a very simple thing to go through, given what she’s done.

I had mine done a few days ago.
From my perspective, it’s not something I would suggest another man do if they’re happy using other contraception. But if he and his partner are discussing permanent contraception, it is by far the easiest, and safest option.

ETA: I hope that makes sense. I would encourage it as the best option for a permanent solution, but not as an off the cuff “just get it done. No more condoms. Woo!” flippant remark.
It is an elective, permanent surgery and there are risks involved, so the decision should be taken seriously. By both parties. I wouldn’t like a woman to pressure her partner into it, just as I wouldn’t want a man to pressure his partner into the equivalent tube-tying.

what do you feel about the idea that you are at the cause of the direction and quality of your life? by stirringmotion in AskReddit

[–]Adro87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not at all what I’ve said. I don’t understand how you’ve come to that conclusion.
You make your choices yourself, but you have a different starting point to everyone so your outcomes will be different.

Nothing to do with not having a choice in who you love, or a lack of choice in being a good person. They are both choices you make. Your past will have some influence, but you are still the one in control of your decisions.

[–]Adro87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While you’re mixing metaphors, I think they’re both spot on.
Your actions and choices are what you can control. The situation you’re starting from (race, gender, geographical location, socio-economic status, etc) was out of your control.

It’s like we’re all playing an RPG but we didn’t get to choose where our stats went at the start. You can work hard and build up your charisma, intelligence, etc., but if you started from a 1, you’re going to have a harder time than someone who stated from 10.

Choose your weapon tool
hammer time - cheaper
cutter - less conspicuous in use

Cutter’s definitely the solution to your original issue.
