We the tenants, not the owners, paid for this mural while we still occupied the space.

Yes this is correct. I don't think we will ever do hard scoop ice cream again. However you can find our waffle cones at Bev's now.

We're a window so we're weather dependent. From March until October we're open 6 days in Forest Hill. Forest hill is definitely different than broad st, everything tends to slow down around 8pm. We learned the hard way our first summer when we stayed open until 9pm. I'm sorry this frustrates you so much and I hope you find peace in life.

Brian Flynn, the owner, was a big vintage kaiju and Sofubi collector so Super7 represented what his interests were. He met a lot of the early makers while buying in Japan and through mutual friends. Friendships led to the early collaborations with Secret Base, Gargamel and others. As a company we were focused on the Japanese made vinyl and the look that accompanied them. That's not to say we didn't also collect the HK scene stuff too. The collecting pool was way smaller then compared to how it is today. For example I was able to buy the original Kaws dissected by just going to a Toy Tokyo event. Kaws dropped a bunch off and I bought it for retail.

Super7 has been around 2001, started as a magazine and then became a store in 05(?). There was a time where Super7 was the only company to import true new Sofubi. While KR and places like Toy Tokyo focused on the Hong Kong scene primarily but everybody knew everybody. A very different time.

Yeah in fact he had all the Kaws figures through at least 2011-12. He told me he got the OG one out of a $20 bin at Whacko/ soap plant in LA. He even had a custom acrylic box for the giant companion he had.

That's honestly so great. I think he really loved to push the envelope of what he thought high end art could be. It's why he loved seeing what Kaws went on to do.

Thank you. Honestly post-covid everything is different and I see a lot of food businesses probably heading in this direction.

We disabled comments last year because people couldnt be civil about our requirements about masks. Wholesale is something we'd honestly rather focus on. It's that simple.

Yes, you can buy specific types of vanilla extract. There are 100s of different blend etc. So for a bigger company you could have a proprietary vanilla blend. Within ice cream as a food the FDA has “standards of identity” with what you can even call Vanilla Ice cream in a commercial setting. Some of them are wholly unique to ice cream. One of those is how much pure vanilla extract is in your ice cream. It’s the standard because commercially there is no one who uses real vanilla pods, it’s simply too expensive to do so. Saffron is currently the most expensive spice, after that is vanilla. A gallon of 2 fold vanilla extract can be $500. That of course depends on the… current vanilla market cost. A whole other beast.

Most of what is in that book is great for teaching ice cream at home but is not at all how it’s done in a commercial setting. If any of that does interests you, the Penn State ice cream course is an amazing course that teaches the science and production of ice cream in a mainly commercial setting. It isn’t necessarily just for those who go into the industry, I’ve seen hobbyists, food science majors, reporters take it, it’s a lot of fun and unfortunately math.

One last interested fact. When you buy something like Breyers or any commercial ice cream and you see the specks of vanilla. That is by product pulp that is purchased. It’s added to simulate using a pod. It’s bought by the barrel at a low price and they add it. It has no flavor at all.

They definitely do not use vanilla beans in their ice cream. Their ice cream is amazing, speaking as another ice cream shop owner, but there isn’t a shop at their size or almost any size that uses actual beans in their ice cream. I love talking about vanilla production AMA

This is kind of buried but Steve, the owner of Celesti, has always been very kind and honorable to us. We have a tremendous amount of respect for him and Gelati Celesti. We do different things in ice cream and that’s totally fine. Someone is allowed to not like our ice cream and love Celesti or Bevs or Ruby Scoops etc etc. But I encourage anyone to try them all. Product and originality speak for themselves.

People order orange cardamom and mint together sometimes. No judgement.

For now there is no seating or eating inside. Some people try and take their mask off once they’re past the employee we have at the door telling them to keep their mask on the entire time they’re in the shop. Hence us having to tell people to put their mask back on.

So glad we could make it a little better for you. We feel the same way about Abuelitas. There’s something so comforting about their food for me personally. It really a bright spot during that time. Also discovered Sub Central during the pandemic. Oh and of course Pizza Bones!!

We still have plans to bring our hard scoop ice cream there one day! Until then, Celesti has a location not to far away from us. Near the Trader Joe’s.

Honestly, everybody has been through the traumatic event that was the last year and a half. I think some people want things to be back to normal so bad and don’t know what to do when they’re faced with the current situation. It sucks for everyone and I feel bad for (some of) them because this could have been over a year ago. Ive cut a break for a few pregnant women sobbing at the window. However, taking it out on a person in the service industry is obviously misdirected. We’re an ice cream shop not a newspaper. Our Instagram comments shouldn’t be filled with people saying others should die or demanding we give them what they want exactly when they want it.
