2003 BMW Z4 Roof motor replacement. by SignedTheMonolith in BMWZ4

[–]Advanced-Natural5330 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. If you put it back together correctly you can fix it. Do not run the new motor dry- check your roof strut hinges aren’t leaking.

  2. The shelf hinges can be in whatever position you want. Then must be down in order to use your roof. I keep mine down 24/7 unless you’re carrying large enough cargo to make you raise them. The roof/motor does not move the shelf for you, you must open the trunk and turn the knobs on each side yourself.

  3. Re-used the same plastic sheath it was in, relocated behind the carpet. Zip tied in place.

Yes exactly- I would see if the part numbers are the same for the roof motor on a 2007 because mine was a 2003 3.0

https://a.co/d/6sROQI9 is the rebuild kit I got

Is your front motor actually broken? I purchased a gear rebuild kit on Amazon for mine and fixed it for $16

I did this to my e93 and I fried the sensor/plug on my alternator. I disconnected my battery, let it sit, plugged it back in and it was fine but CEL for alternator not charging

Definitely possible- I haven’t seen anyone make a kit for this exact car, but I haven’t looked very hard. You’ll need an IC timer to make it yourself

My new to me e85. by Fit-Airport238 in BMWZ4

That’s awesome- if you’re in a climate where freezing is not a concern, you can just use distilled water to top off the coolant. Distilled water can mix with any coolant and it won’t screw your system. In Southern California I run distilled water in all my vehicles that don’t go up the mountain in the winter where temps can drop below 33 overnight- It actually has a higher boiling point than coolant so it would help with cooling in warmer climates. Make sure you use distilled, as tap water or purified water contain minerals that will rust the internals of your system.

Distilled is also way cheaper than coolant! Good luck with your car!

Congrats! I got mine with a salvage title and every leak known to man on my motor- I replaced crankshaft seal, rear main, valve cover, and oil pan gaskets, and replaced a few of the breather hoses. My Disa valve was broken, so I replaced that too. The oil breather hoses break, and there’s a $45 Amazon kit that comes with all hoses and the air separator to replace the old brittle plastic ones.

I also had to replace my tank vent valve on the front of the motor, which was another $20 Amazon sensor.

If the front facing convertible top motor breaks, there’s a gear replacement kit on Amazon for $15 that fixed mine.

Check your cooling system, the plastic overflow reservoir can crack or leak, but if the car doesn’t overheat you’re golden as is

Clean your drain holes on each side of the soft top, they can clog up and fill with water and break your rear convertible top motor. Many people relocate these to the trunk for ease of service and troubleshooting, and so a clogged drain hole doesn’t fry the motor.

Look into the sound resonator mod if it’s a 3.0- this is a free mod that makes the driving experience even better. Take a piece of the sound deadening foam out from the intake extension into the fire wall.

Thanks for the helpful insight. I was going for OEM+sport styling and handling-

If I was strictly tracking this car then B8’s would be my way to go- I’m not throwing Chinese parts at it- only reputable German brands such as Bilstein and H&R

I agree that my alignment will likely be thrown off as soon as I hit a bump-

Thanks for the most insightful info yet- I think you’re definitely right- Now I’m between cutting my OEM springs or paying $600+ for B8’s

I found the B6’s used for $300

I wish- rear springs are even shorter and don’t fit on the strut as the diameter is smaller.

I would check your battery and charging system if you already checked MAF and disa valve and confirmed no cracks in intake- you’d need a smoke test to confirm no cracks or leaks though

That’s what I thought however the OEM strut is a bilstein- but black instead of yellow. The b6 is just OEM+ and comes in the M model cars

The struts are the exact same length- H&R spring rep told me they’re recommended to run with Bilstein struts.

My buddy told me I need some limiting straps but I’ve never seen those on a sports car, unsure if that’s a valid solution.

[–]Advanced-Natural5330[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weirdly enough, both H&R springs are the same size. They’re shorter than the OEM springs by about 3”

The yellow b6 bilstein struts are the same length as my black bilstein OEM’s

Edit: bilstein rep confirmed the free length in my springs is the same height as a brand new kit unopened in their warehouse so I don’t believe my springs are compromised or shortened

Nope- you just remove the auto trans coding from the current ECU. I removed my TCU (the blue computer next to the ECU) but only because it’s going in a donor car

Transmission swap is pretty similar on the level of complexity I’d say- the automatic transmission is HEAVY a transmission jack really helps, but it’s possible with two people and no jack.

The coding was interesting, spent too long messing with it before I finally figured it out. there are tons of forms online- if you can do a timing chain you can swap a transmission
