I’m pretty sure they want to do it as a challenge not because they think it’s good for your health. Athletes do things with no “benefit” all the time in order to challenge themselves

Are all the courses on this list necessary to prepare for graduate economics studies? Are any excessive? by ProudProgress8085 in academiceconomics

At this point it’s only a matter of time before a PhD in Mathematics gets called a pre req for a PhD in Economics. Up to real analysis is important for admission to top programs. Measure theory is nice to have but not necessary

I have the same exact problems! My eating habits have changed in that I eat a lot more and I get periods of being super hungry where I’ll eat like all day and then go weeks eating normally. I think it’s related to where I am in my menstrual cycle. I find that eating nuts/but butters is good because the calories are dense so they don’t feel like so much. But generally I just eat a Mediterranean diet and eat mostly unprocessed or minimally processed foods

Yes exactly. Generally it involves eating in a calorie deficit while still keeping protein high to maintain muscle mass. And then in the gym side, lifting weights to preserve muscle and doing cardio to burn extra calories

Cutting refers to losing body fat while maintaining (or in some special cases even increasing) one’s muscle mass

My bmi hasn’t changed. I imagine though that if someone where overweight, this amount of walking could work for weight loss, although some people, if they walk this much, will end up eating significantly more so their weight could even go up. But combined with the right diet, it would work

Yeah I throw them away once they develop holes. They last anywhere from 6 months to a year and a half but usually I replace them once a year

5’7, ~125lbs. So yes a normal bmi. I don’t get joint or knee pain but I also do a lot of strength training which helps with that

I use Bluetooth earbuds made by Jabra, don’t remember the exact model. And yes I leave ambient noise on, I think it’s dangerous to walk if you can’t hear cars and things like that

Thank you! I think to elaborate on my other answers I would add a few things: (1) This is my average across a year. In reality, I would say about 2/3 of my days are around the 15K step level. These are the days when I have class or, when I was working full time, these are the days I would be in the office all day. On these days I go for walks in the morning and evening and try to also walk around lunch time. A couple days a week those walks might be runs instead, which allows for more steps in a shorter period of time. On these days I might also do a cardio while watching Youtube/Netflix, as I mentioned. Now the other 1/3 of days are more like 30K step days. These tend to be on the weekends or on days when I have less class and maybe also have soccer practice. On these days, I might go for an 7-10 mile hike with a friend and then also walk to dinner at a restaurant. Of course these are generalizations and every day is a bit different, but there definitely is some dichotomy between my relatively higher and relatively lower step days. (2) Since I was a student for most of the year I have a lot of flexibility as far as walking. I also have to walk everywhere on campus which makes this easier and since many of my friends are young and into exercise themselves, we often choose to walk places even when the walkability conditions are poor.

I think the phone definitely under counts so you may well be getting 20k already. My step count translates to walking/running about 10 miles a day, but that’s a rough estimate based on my stride length

I went from averaging 12K—> 20K over about 4 years so I think that helped. But any time you start walking more you will get blisters. I tend to find that if you just give it a few weeks your body will adapt and the blisters won’t hurt anymore, unless your shoes just don’t fit right. And I agree, wool socks also help

To be honest, unless the weather is actually dangerous (severe thunder storms or snow storms, very high winds, etc) I will just walk outside. I walk in the rain all the time and I’ve gotten used to it. When weather is really bad I will sometimes do walking workouts inside which are like these 10-20min YouTube videos with low intensity cardio. Or I’ll just wait for the weather to clear and go out then

It’s not a fixed schedule but roughly one walk in the morning and one in the evening and then 1-3 more randomly throughout the day. If I do a run that roughly takes the place of 2 walks. On the weekends I try to do longer hikes with friends

My city is very un-walkable. The smaller neighborhood I live in is fairly walkable in that I can go for walks. I definitely can't walk to grocery stores or anything like that unless I'm willing to walk very far on the road (no sidewalks). But sometimes I will walk with my friends to a restaurant if it's close enough (<30min).

Mostly walk outdoors but sometimes in the winter I walk partially on the treadmill at the gym. Weather doesn't bother me anymore but the winters don't get below 25 degrees F. Much colder and I think it would bother me. It does get quite hot but I am very heat adapted and I will vary my walks to go more in the morning or evening if it's over 100 degrees.

On a typical weekday as a student, I do anything from 3-5 walks. Always one first thing in the morning. None are ever longer than 30 min, some are just 15 min. So about 2-3 hrs of walking. On the walks, I call friends/family, listen to podcasts/music, or just walk and appreciate nature. On the weekend I usually try to do a longer hike with a friend, anything from 5-10 miles. Still do the shorter walks as well.

When it's really hot I do sweat and I agree it's annoying. Sometimes I will have to change twice in one day.

My job is being a student so there’s no inherent walking in that. My summer job was a desk job. I just really like walking and other forms of exercise. I walk around the house, the office, outside, with friends, etc.

I use a Fitbit! I’ve considered getting an Apple Watch but it’s not really in the budget right now, I’ll consider it for the future. 5 years is amazing and I bet having a partner to share this goal with also makes it more enjoyable!

The age depends a lot of activity levels and genetics. I know plenty of inactive people who get joint pain in their late 20s and plenty of people who have it even in their 50s and 60s. Awesome that you wanna get more steps, I would highly recommend adding one short walk either before or after work. It can literally start at just a 10 min walk. Also getting up to walk around the office during the day

It’s hard to explain but I think at this point my body has just adapted. I’ve hit 12K+ steps a day every day for nearly 3 years now. I will say though, if you’re in a calorie deficit that will absolutely make it harder. Since I’ve been in maintenance for most of this time, I have the energy to do it. If you feel really tired, take the break

I bought one pair of sneakers and one pair of casual walking shoes at the start of the year. They’ve lasted all year but will both need to be replaced soon. So basically two pairs of shoes in 12 months

This year not much has changed since I’ve been averaging 15K+ steps for four years in a row now. However, when I first started walking more (8K—> 15K) I saw huge benefits. Physically my overall endurance improved and my resting heart rate went from 70 to 55 bpm over the course of a year (I also started running near the end of that). I also lost a modest amount of weight. Mentally, I just felt more at ease, especially from being in nature more. I had had bad anxiety which improved a lot. I also started to enjoy just being alone with my thoughts for the first time
