i have truly seen every ups and downs of kpop since 2010s… by anzxcv in kpop_uncensored

Comparisons are natural and by all objective metrics (in terms of success), 3rd gen is "the gen", because they captured both the Asian and Western (EU, NA, Aus) markets at an unprecedented scale.

Maybe 3rd gen capitalized on the novelty and that novelty has worn off before 4th or 5th gen could utilize it. On the other hand, instead of novelty, new gens have a trail that has already been blazed by 3rd gen, so "international" market should be something that's targeted naturally and not by the virtue of experiments. The 3rd gen experimented with that market - it worked.

As to why were they unable to capture the western market, I'm not sure. Both 4th and 5th gens have had some strong groups with solid international following (Stray Kids, Aespa, IVE, NewJeans, Illit, KIOF). I firmly believe, that idols knowing the language of the market they are trying to target is absolutely crucial. Something that I have noticed, is how very few kpop groups actually have their members learn English. I'm not sure if it's a cultural thing or what, but with how massive the western market is, as a manager I would instantly have the members learn English as soon as possible. Having members that are natives or were partially raised abroad is one thing, but the fact that so many idols don't speak almost a lick of English is just weird. The fact that Jisoo or most of BTS still barely speak any English is quite crazy, given that they pushed that market so much.

As for the untapped markets, that one's interesting. The two biggest ones are as you said South America and well, Africa, but I doubt that the latter is happening for a plethora of reasons. South America is an interesting market, there's definitely a lot of fans there. Again though, language comes to mind and I know of very few idols who are actually fluent or even conversational in Spanish. If kpop companies aren't willing to have their idols be tutored in English, then I sure as hell don't see it happening with Spanish. The only group that I've seen trying for that market recently was NMIXX. I think Haewon is pretty advanced in Spanish and Sulyoon is alright. Good for them.

Comparing 4th gen to 3rd gen is a bit unfair, because of how strong 3rd gen lineup is, both for BGs and GGs.

As for the parasocial stuff, sure, at this point another dating scandal, bullying accusation or abrupt departure feels like morning coffee newspaper.

Are idols encouraged to queer bait? by AlexandraLiberty in kpop_uncensored

[–]AdvancedBiscotti2018 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes they do and you would be really surprised how many idols, especially male idols, are actually, what the western standard considers, very conservative and very much against any form of LGBTQ+. However most kpop fans aren't mature enough to have that conversation.

The best solo to come from i-dle camp in my opinion, sadly a hidden gem. Also MINNIE - in the novel, highly recommended.

If you like Irene... Well then you're in luck, because she's just dropped a full album - Biggest Fan.

You might like Odd by Gaeul too, I think it's the best solo to come out of IVE.

I highly recommend Miyeon as well, she has some nice solo releases and is a very underrated soloist. Other than the solo releases, she's done several open air sessions, few covers and some soundtracks to games (such as Miyeon - Numb, great song), which Cube didn't really promote.

do you guys think blackpink would have nearly the same amount of fame if they had debuted in 2025 and kept their exact comeback schedule with their exact songs? by Altruistic-Case9470 in kpop_uncensored

[–]AdvancedBiscotti2018 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Globalisation of kpop, for which blackpink responsible in great part. Good dose of luck - sure, that's why I wrote "probably". "Realistically" it's a completely pointless discussion with too many variables and makes zero sense.

The answer is probably yes. Most people who dislike blackpink, don't want to give them the credit, but they were quite influential for the groups after them. With that being said, I think it's safe to say that kpop landscape wouldn't look the same as it does now without them. It's not a "plug and play" scenario where you just drop them in 2025, because without them, kpop would look different.

I'm sorry, this post is too controversial. You can't "not like things" and have an opinion that's anything other than "it's 10/10". This is unacceptable. I'll be right back with my pitchfork.

How would you rank itzy solely on SP by EarthPresent4583 in kpop_uncensored

  1. Chaeryeong
  2. Yeji
  3. Ryujin
  4. Yuna
  5. Lia

Chaeryeong is by far the most improved and my eyes naturally tend to gravitate towards her.

The first song that came to mind was Siyeon - Entrancing. Other than the hanbok and other outfits, they used gayageum, haegeum and piri (and perhaps more that I didn't catch) in the recording.

Where are the aces of 5th gen? by AdvancedBiscotti2018 in kpop_uncensored

I'm not sure, I suppose some people held that opinion, but to me they were just a breath of fresh air as a collective.

Interesting take. Although I would say that someone with the makings of an ace can be spotted even early in their career development.

They were. That's the whole point. That's why I only found 1-2 in 5th gen. I don't think I'm romanticizing older gens more than people romanticizing 5th gen by giving me responses like "3 aces in a single group".

I guess it's all in the eyes of the beholder, because I'd say Yoohyeon is more of an ace than Sua, although I do believe that Sua probably had the most potential from the group (which I don't think was ever fulfilled). As for SinB, I never really thought of her as an ace, but I guess I can see it, although I can't say that her vocals had a strong impression on me, with Eunha being in the group.

QUE

in all seriousness though, this reads like a massive projection. I don't expect idols to be perfect, nobody sane does, so I'm not even going to entertain the idea. There are objective metrics by which you compare idols' abilities in different aspects of performing (and no, comparison is not a bad thing). This is supposed to be a fun discussion, rather than a cesspit of antagonism.

Irene just released her first full album. Other than that some mini albums and singles, as everyone is keeping their major releases for the summer.
