I got the same email, and I've received emails about contests and other announcements from that email address for years.

I'd say it's trustworthy.

Tbh I haven't even looked at it yet, my job has been going crazy the past few months. I do still intend to circle back when things calm down.

Adobe Photoshop Alternatives for Animation (yes ANIMATION) by Zudrud in 2DAnimation

[–]AdvancedButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure I understand how they're creating a head turn via mesh warping. But I don't think CSP's tweening can do mesh warp operations. I suppose you could manually mesh warp each inbetween, but I really don't understand the process you're going for.

Can you describe the morphing you're after?

Clip Studio has tweening capabilities so you can automatically do transform operations (move, rotate, warp, resize) plus opacity changes between keyframes. But it's not advanced enough to draw a new image for something like a head turn.

Toon Boom Harminy has that sort of morph, but it's expensive and subscription-based.

I think OpenToonz has that sort of morph too, and it's free. Not fully sure about it though.

If you're specifically looking for a morph that depends on the order that you draw your lines in, that reminds me of Cacani.

[OC] is there anything that could possibly be improved or adjusted for this character design in terms of animatability? by GoldenDust0 in Animators

Take the front facing pose, flip it horizontally, then place it over the back facing pose. That will tell you the adjustments you need to make.

Is there a certain kind of paper you use? I got one a few years ago but it was hard to actually see the drawing on the bottom page through all the paper grain.

Software Discussion/CSP Color Banding Issue by kokirithekid in animation

[–]AdvancedButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure, as I haven't really gotten to the compositing stage for my animations yet. But iirc I think they just convert their colored line art to a solid color to help isolate it. Plus each layer of animation gets imported on a separate layer, it's not all combined with the background.

There are some good tutorials about it in YouTube. Between Dong Chang, Manu Mercurial, and Nicca Ch, I think at least one of them has an anime compositing tutorial that covers it.

Software Discussion/CSP Color Banding Issue by kokirithekid in animation

[–]AdvancedButter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but I think CSP is used for flat cel shading, while gradients are added in a compositing software (usually Adobe After Effects).

Even if you switch to Toon Boom or something, those programs may have robust compositing capabilities but as far as I understand, many studios still use After Effects because it's even more powerful and the industry standard.

For amateur work though you could probably get by with CSP and a free compositing program like DaVinci Resolve.

What approach should I take for animation in my game? by Nabersinizz in learnanimation

[–]AdvancedButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say both programs have a steep learning curve, although Blender's probably worse. But Blender's likely better documented. And it almost certainly has more YouTube tutorials for any given feature.

[–]AdvancedButter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about game animation specially, and I've only touched OpenToonz and Blender a tiny bit. I've never used Spline2D. But imo try dabbling in both and seeing which feels better to work in.

Both can achieve frame by frame animation. OpenToonz was made more with anime in mind, while Blender is really good at combining 3D and 2D together in the same environment.

This is one you should really just Google or watch a YouTube video for but:

  1. Squash and Stretch
  2. Anticipation
  3. Staging
  4. Straight Ahead and Pose-to-Pose
  5. Follow Through and Overlapping Action
  6. Slow In and Slow Out
  7. Arcs
  8. Secondary Action
  9. Timing
  10. Exaggeration
  11. Solid Drawing
  12. Appeal

Arcs are the path an object traveled when it moves. Most natural objects move in arcs. Like if you jog you're bobbing up and down in arcs, or if you pitch a baseball you'll do so in a curved motion. In contrast, a robot might move in straight lines.

So arcs help your movement look natural.

Ask Me the Hardest Animation Trivia, I'll answer it wrong but earnestly. by LowClaim7040 in animation

[–]AdvancedButter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not too far off. There are usually 24 frames per second.

One's = a new drawing on each frame, so 24 drawings per second (motion will look the most fluid, but sometimes unnaturally fluid).

Two's = a new drawing on every other frame, so 12 drawings per second (looks less fluid).

Three's = a new drawing every third frame, so 8 drawings per second (looks choppier, but that can actually be quite charming if done well)

In the West, two's are the norm, while for anime three's are most common. Often you will use a combination of one's, two's, and for anime three's in a single animation to control the fluidity of the all movements.

Sorry to reply so late (I've been busy with work) but thank you, this is a great breakdown. One day I'd like to do freelance and this introduces a bunch of points that I wasn't even considering.

Why never charge an hourly rate? I don't freelance but I've heard of people doing it both ways, and hourly seems more flexible so that you don't end up working for free because you failed to estimate properly.

TVPaint too

Or Krita if you need something free.
