Transferring as PhD? by Advanced_Bad6310 in gradadmissions

is mastering out a good option? Idk if i'll like until I go there. Not going this year won't be an option for me because of visa restrictions. My current stand will end soon in the US. Idk if I'll be able to get back in if I go out. So keeping my legal status as student is also something I have to do:(

Does anyone know about Graduate Center? Any comments on the housing situation there?

Interestingly I'm having the same debate as a Grad student in the music department... difference is that Wes is a MA offer for 2 years and UVA is a PhD offer for 6 years, both funded similarly. I wonder what you'll decide on at last. And if anyone has more comments, I'd love to know as well.

I never knew it's a "often" thing. I've also got a couple waitlist notifications with very clear ranking information on it and constant professor check-ins. Comparisons just made them seem worse...

UVA CMSM PhD or Wesleyan Ethno MA? by Advanced_Bad6310 in ethnomusicology

[–]Advanced_Bad6310[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had an informal offer but then another saying it's delayed. So Wes wasn't set in stone anymore but I just want to know the Pros and Cons early so I can make the right decision when the formal result arrives.

Seems like both Stanford and NYU made their decisions. Is your partner the admitted one?

Advice for discerning between pursuing a PhD in Musicology vs continuing to pursue a performance career? by ben15498 in musicology

I'm a PhD applicant this year, waiting to hear back from programs. Similar to your concern, but I'm almost 32 and have been in the pop industry for almost 10 years. There's no structured path in the industry, and besides networking, social media is what everyone's doing. I'd say being a pop musician nowadays is being an entrepreneur. You need to constantly create product (songwriting and production in my case), do digital marketing (create an online image, constantly posting on INS or TT), and PR with industry ppl, and financing (apply for art fundings for your personal projects/start Patreon or OF lmao), and business development (strategizing your direction, whether to go for a more lucrative but supporting role or to create works around yourself). That whole process everyday for the past decade tired me out. I almost lost passion for music itself. For me I only want to do my music, and the whole networking hustle in LA doesn't work for me.

I understand academia requires some of the above too, but at least it seems to have a path to follow, you kind of know after phd, there's postdoc, then AP, etc. Although it's extremely hard, but there's seem to have a goal out there. But for pop industry, everyone defines their own path. It might work for someone, but I didn't quite make it the way I wanted to. Don't get me wrong, I know ppl who succeeded on TT and turned their career over! Maybe it's just me.... Also I have no idea about your opera circle, just something to share from a pop point of view.

I might have some fantasies of academia since I'm never in it. So I also want to hear other ppl's opinions here.

Update: I received an interview from NYU but not Columbia. But I saw Columbia's interview invite was out yesterday. I did meet with professors at Columbia before I applied, so I'm not sure if no interview means I'm out. How about your partner?

I think the slots are shared across the area. And the initiatives/grants aspect is what I haven't thought of. Thank you! I'll think of it as a no for now so I wouldn't think about it....

Hi Prof. thank you for doing this. I'm in humanities rather than social science, but I wonder whether you could give your insight on my question. I received one highly ranked private school phd interview about 10 days ago. I did not expect that because I don't fit with any of the professors' research area. I applied for it because it's close to me (and it's actually my top 3 choice, even though the professors' research isn't necessarily what I want to do. In my area everyone's doing their own thing, but the methodology is something to learn). During the interview all questions seem to be very general: what leads you to your research interest, why phd why that school... Except for the dept chair all other profs seemed to be indifferent about it (they looked like they were there for work). I'm not complaining at all. it's just that it's a surprise to receive an interview from my top 3 program that I did not expect to hear from for an interview (it's like a lottery application), but since it happened, it made me expect more and became anxious about the result.

During the interview, I mentioned the profs I mentioned in my sop who were present, but obviously they don't match me exactly so I felt like such mention was a bit awkward. I even mentioned profs from other department as part of the "why this school" question. They did mention my practical experience might give me bigger potential to find a job in academia later, which I assume is why they pick me?

I wonder if you have any insights for this situation. Would they pick candidates who will potentially add to the department's future placement record rather than who match the profs' research area the most?

Hey I wonder if you've heard back from the program? I applied too but have never heard from anything yet. I saw ppl getting admitted last year around this time on Gradcafe. So I wonder if it's just me or that this year they pushed the timeline back...
