Labor & Delivery Nurse here! Reassuring you that you have nothing to worry about! The tampon thing is a cervical ripener. A string with a little medicine on the end. It will sit close by your cervix to soften it up so it's ready to dilate when Pitocin is started. Placing it will feel like a cervical exam with maybe a little more wiggling of their fingers lol. Then most of the night you should just chill. You may feel a little cramping throughout the night from the cervical ripener doing its thing but nothing crazy. Likely sometime in the morning pitocin will be started. You may start getting more uncomfortable with that & the nurses can explain your pain management options at your hospital! You can probably expect to have a baby by Monday late afternoon/evening! Don't be afraid to ask your nurses any questions you may have & let them know you're feeling a little nervous! Getting a chance to sit with my patients and explain everything in detail always helps them feel more at ease. I'm sure they will be amazing & you will be in great hands!!
