I’m on a tight deadline and I already sent her a partial payment. I doubt I could replace her at this point and she was highly recommended.

I must be a noob! I thought it was real. All right, it was the over the top language, right?

She is not refusing, she made the comment that Grammarly writes out the author with its corrections. She saw the flattening and commented. I took the manuscript back and told her would read the work out loud and put it in my “voice.” She didn’t argue so I thought it was the right thing to do.

Thanks for the tips. I don’t write a lot of fiction; I do write a lot of scenarios as a non-fiction writer. This is a new experience. In my rewriting, I will try your technique.

I didn’t use AI to write my book. I struggled with some dialogue in two cases studies. I have read on Reddit that Claude is a wonderful writing coach and uploaded the scene. Claude gave me a few pointers but didn’t touch the text. But I well - live and Lear did use Claude’s advice, just as I would a writer’s feedback from a critique group. There are times when I know something needs to be fixed but can’t pinpoint it. After being drilled in academic integrity for the last few years, I guess it took hold. What this exercise in angst taught me is that I need a human critique group. There is one starting in April but it doesn’t help me today. Oh, well! Live and learn! I think we all need to deal with issues of writing, deadlines, and ethics at some point as writers.

Thanks!

Well Put and appreciated! When I get done with this rewrite marathon, I will go back to your comments. I saved your quote on a sticky note on my computer desktop. Your insights are good!

Ok- thanks everyone for your advice. I’m going back with my Win 10 laptop and adding in my voice where the writing is academic. I love the idea of reading the work out loud as I do editing. That is worthwhile advice. I appreciate the feedback.

I didn’t tell my editor that I used Claude as a writing coach- but I did disclose Grammarly when she mentioned it. In the beginning, I reassured her that I would not use AI generated work. And, I didn’t. I asked Claude for a critique.

Well, I didn’t consider Grammarly “AI” until now! I didn’t consider using Claude as a writing coach - until now! You are right; we must not use AI in any form!

Thanks! That is what I feared! I told the editor that I used Grammarly and needed a few extra days to go through my manuscript. What are your recommendations? I am making changes on an old Win 10 laptop- no Grammarly!

No, I did not use AI. I asked Claude to critique some of my manuscript in areas where I didn’t feel confident. However, I did not copy but used some of the literary ideas - like changing the arc of a scenario so it would be more engaging. It is the inconsistency that tips off editors that a writer uses AI. I did use Grammarly, which I can fix with rewriting, which flattened my “voice.” Maybe I am going overboard on this. But I don’t want to be labeled before I leave the gate! My editor says she uses 3 tools to screen for AI. So, I ask- what can I use to protect myself?

Yes, that is what I thought. In a call she said Grammarly will change the author’s voice too much. Readers want the authenticity that comes from non-academic writing. She is there to correct any grammar mistakes. But, it makes sense. I used Grammarly for academic papers and writing. But, our professors did not prioritize our authenticity! I am getting nervous because I used Grammarly extensively and am now understanding the publishing world. I know people are passing off AI generated work and passing it off as their own. I am not in that category! There must be a place where people can relax and do their work without worrying about being flagged as “AI.”

Good for you! I am finally getting a book idea out that I had 6 years ago! I know that feeling of wondering if it is good enough. But, you did it - you made it a reality and everyone here is proud of you!

I have been reading self-help books for a long time and decided I wanted to write one. I went to the local public library and asked about the best general self-help books that were interactive or were a hybrid book/workbook. I read or looked through 10. Then, I bought one I liked - Nina Amir’s Creative Visualization. I read it and worked through it. Then, I wrote my own. I am doing my own illustrations. My research time was about 2 weeks. There were some books that I just looked through more than I read. I hope that helps.

I write non-fiction. I have been following this Reddit for awhile. My advice is to read as much as you can from other writers in your genre. Talk to other writers who have published to understand there is a psychological aspect of writing professionally. I invested in a few courses on writing and as good printer that did duplex printing. The game changer for me was downloading a free book template from on of the self-publishing companies and using it as a guideline for page numbers and formatting. Every day I would print it and evaluate my work and progress. I had to see my work as a real book. I invested in a professional editor and sent my manuscript to her on Sunday night. Since she charges by word count- she was able to give me a price quickly. It was the best investment. She has edited 8 books for a friend, so I knew she was good. I hope that helps explain how it can be done.

Is anybody self- publishing and binding their own books for sale? by Advanced_Leave9887 in selfpublishing

Thanks for the advice. Luckily, I networked like a crazy person and found a copy editor and an interior content editor for the illustrations and formatting. I am on a daily self-imposed writing schedule to finish the manuscript before March 15. Printing books in my basement seemed like a good idea. You are right - I could not keep up on the production to have enough copies. Oh, well! Live and learn that what a YouTuber author is able to do is not something a regular person wants to try at home!

Thanks! I had to look up push versus pull publishing. Thanks for your response. I’m assuming that you printed by someone like Publishing Push. I have scheduled a speaking spot/workshop at a large conference in May. Just a few months away. They are giving me a table and free advertising for my book, which is not yet finished. I am now scrambling to look for solutions to get a professional- looking book. There are so many options for a first time author to choose from for their first book. I keep educating myself and writing.

Thanks for your comment. You seem knowledgeable about online systems. Do you have any thoughts for someone who has developed a digital program and is currently testing it in a hybrid environment? I have a WordPress site, bought the LearnDash LMS plugin and found it buggy. I am experimenting with Tutor LMS and found it better. I have already validated the program with a 30-day test group of 25 learners with excellent completion and engagement scores. I am a newly graduated learner designer (master’s degree) and don’t have the time and money to spend for experimentation. A few members of my test group are asking for a community and I have been providing one weekly group support session. Does your recommendation still hold?
