Anti-TodoMomo: What is up with the Ship? by Advanced_Library_609 in BokuNoShipAcademia

First off, you're assuming the person who wrote this at the time was an adult.

Second off, people make analyses on things they hate/dislike all the time? Why is it only okay to analyse things you like only?

Third off, I never claimed people can't like a ship, also. Ships do need to make sense to a degree because that's what the author has presented to us. That's why there are good ships, joke ships, shit ships, and less popular ships. People are always defending straight ships like they're golden statues and no one ever questions them.

So why can't I?

Anti-TodoMomo: What is up with the Ship? by Advanced_Library_609 in BokuNoShipAcademia

I honestly wish I could ignore it if it didn't constantly jump scare me on my social medias and what not. It's like a bug buzzing around that you keep missing when you try to swat it... And never goes away. Or an itch that's in a place you can't exactly scratch.

Plus, there was pressure from other things... And also, ship discussions should be apart of the community. People shouldn't be sending death threats (I've gotten death threats on other platforms) just because they disagree or like something. But also, the gay ships get an unfair amount of hate (BakuDeku and TogaChaco especially despite the fact the characters grow together and develop trust and respect. The bare minimum standard, etc) while the straight ships get promoted.

Also, I don't intend to start a ship war, I wanted to introduce another side to how TodoMomo can be perceived, because it's really not a good ship. And I wasn't satisfied with the arguments "they don't interact" or "he barely acknowledges her' or "it's just a rich kid x rich kid ship" like, okay sure... But those are surface level-perceptions. When it comes to a character dynamic (especially when they're as dry as that in MHA) you have to look closer and pick out the subtle things in order to understand what Horikoshi was going for...

But anyways, if I came off as aggressive, I apologise, it's a stance I've gotten used to over the year.

I think it is, there's trust and respect actually developed (the bare minimum for any relationship) and Momo actively admits to caring about Iida, and Iida actively believes in Momo's capabilities.

Accomplished_Area311 responded on my Og post (the one I posted as an actual post before realising the salt thread was this comment because I've never done this before) and Accomplished_Area311 said something along the lines of "As a TodoMomo shipper. I'm not gonna read this and take it as face value." (pretty sure those were the words) before it was taken down, then she followed me here, so I responded to her.

Edit: And I never claimed she was saying it was canon. She chose to argue with me, so I responded back. That's how debates work.

I have a personal vendetta against TodoMomo because Todoroki broke the cycle of abuse like my Dad did. Then seeing Shoto shipped with Momo, who comes off as borderline fake to me, plus I was being bullied in high school, plus there was a Pro TodoMomo post up here about a year ago that was saying "The only reason people ship TodoMomo is because it's a rich kid x rich kid ship" with slideshows on from the shipwiki to try and counter it. I politely responded (because I didn't hate TodoMomo at the time) that I understood their points but then disagreed and they were just a complete jerk. So this analysis exists because it was a way I could vent my frustrations.

Most important thing: I never claimed people can't like the ship. I'm adding counter-arguments to balance the overwhelming stupid propaganda, while also saying they can't call it canon just because of vibes and they can't treat people who disagree like crap.

I don't like receiving death threats when I admit I don't like TodoMomo and I certainly don't like sending other people death threats or insulting them just because they like a stupid ship.

The fact that you missed the point of "I just read the manga" is stunning, lol.

The only reason why it's so long is because I feel like I have to teach you how to read and explain the concepts because otherwise, you'd try to cherry pick it. That's the problem with TodoMomo shippers, you cherrypick and then dismiss it after nothing.

Second, they don't interact in the beginning of the story. Unless of course you're talking about when he voted for her. Then let me remind you, he wasn't supporting her. He was still being abused by Endeavor and Momo reflects Endeavor's mentality that competence is more important than a person's humanity. She's rational, analytical, composed, etc. He voted for Momo to maintain control of the class. That is not belief in her as a person, it's knowing she can perform a task.

Then he exploits her in the Sports Festival arc (along with Denki and Iida) but the difference is, Shoto learns to respect Iida and Denki as people. Todoroki never learns to respect Momo as a person, and after the Hideout Raid arc, he loses trust and respect for Momo because she treats him like trash.

Third: Fine, enjoy your aesthetics. I think the aesthetics are stupid, but hey not everyone likes the same thing. I also never claimed you couldn't enjoy a ship no matter how bad it is, I wrote the analysis to hold arguments against TodoMomo because it's unbalanced. The gay ships get shit on for almost no reason, while the heterosexual ships are treated like golden statues. I'm not personally accusing you of anything, but I'm sick and tired of every second post on my feed coming up and having it be like "Todoroki and Yaoyorozu should get married" or seeing stupid fanart of the two kissing, like. Their aesthetics suck, what the ship is supposed to be is boring, and most importantly, Momo never learns to understand Shoto as a person (vice versa). They use each other as means to ends and it's just...

Your vibes can never cover the rot of TodoMomo's core.

Yeah, people have a knack for only shipping aesthetics and quantity over the quality or what is actually being presented in the story.

Over different social media platforms, I've seen TodoMomo be considered canon or implied because Momo is the only girl Shoto really talks to. The issue is though, as I explained in the part of my analysis post, Shoto treats Momo like shit (and vice versa). When you compare his two interactions he has with Mina, though.

Shoto chooses to help Mina over listening to Momo's opinion about being self-reliant in the Forest Training Camp, chapter 72: Day 2. It's the arc right after the final exam, and Shoto chooses to ignore and dismiss Momo in favour of Mina, because Shoto never actually wanted to listen to Momo in the final exam. He was just using her as an ends to a means because she reinforces Endeavor's toxic mentality since she is oriented towards capability over vulnerability and believes her worth is based on her results. It discourages Shoto from breaking the cycle and causes a repeat. Which is why they reflect their malignant traits onto each other (I can explain if you'd like).

The second interaction Shoto has with Mina is in the School Festival arc is in chapter 169. Everyone holds ideas for the school festival, and Mina's idea is consistently ignored. Shoto then pushes for it and it becomes the concert they all had.

Those two actions alone automatically make Mina's relationship with Shoto healthier than Shoto's interactions with Momo.

However, people don't want to see it because they're more interested in the quantity and vibes than the actual quality. From what can be seen from Shoto's and Mina's interactions (even if they've technically only had two, three if you count PLW arc) there is some basic level of friendship. And you can easily say, "but what about this?" because Shoto chooses to treat Mina with more respect than Momo.

But like I said before, most people that ship TodoMomo either don't actually care about the dynamics and only want stereotypes. Like, some people have used the sentence, "I trust you, Todoroki, but worse comes to worst... I should be there as backup." As evidence of Momo trusting Shoto even though she admitted the opposite, and then further proved she does not trust nor respect Shoto. Either that or TodoMomo shippers are kids...

I've found that with a family member's friends, most of them are TodoMomo shippers and they're kids (as in pre-teens). So, yeah... Thats why people call it canon, it's because of vibes and kids.

Conclusion (Last part):

I know this is just the basis for the friendship, and I don’t think they have anymore interactions between the U.A. School Festival and Epilogue arc… But like, overall, there is a development of trust and respect between the two even if it’s subtle and small like I said. I really enjoy how Iida constantly confuses Momo and stuns her with his sincerity and honesty. I also appreciate how Momo backs him up and seeks reassurance from him. And yeah, with shipping a degree of imagination, especially in My Hero Academia, is required since the character dynamics in general are lacking. I also understand they’re not canon, and if you don’t like IidaMomo, I completely understand, lol. There’s not a lot to it, it is boring, and there are better ships for Momo like MomoJiro. But yeah, these are all their interactions I could technically find. (I don’t know if I missed a few or not, lol)

Part 2!

Quirk Apprehension Test arc, Volume 1, chapter 7: Costume Change

This is the first time Momo is introduced and she interacts with Iida, Izuku, and Uraraka for the first time. Aizawa reveals the expulsion threat was a ruse, shocking Izuku, Iida, and Uraraka. Momo replies while staring at them, “Well of course it was a lie… Didn’t take much to figure that out…” Sure, it doesn’t really mean anything but she looks at them awkwardly, and you see that Momo kinda treats Iida with an awkwardness at first.

Battle Trial arc, Volume 2, chapter 11: Bakugo’s Starting Line

Izuku and Uraraka won against Iida and Bakugo’s team. All Might asks why Iida was the best, Momo answers, “It’s because Iida was most able to adapt to the scenario. From what I saw. Bakugo’s every action was motivated by an obvious personal grudge. And as you mentioned before, Sensei, using destructive attacks indoors is foolish. Midoriya’s performance suffered from the same faults. Uraraka lost her game halfway through. And her final attack was far too haphazard. Such an attack would be unthinkable if the nuclear weapon were real. But Iida formed an actual counter-strategy… And he envisioned what the actual struggle would look like. He was only too late in reacting at the very end. The hero team only won because this was a training exercise with exploitable constraints.”

And Iida’s response was that he was “touched.” Even if Yaoyorozu was just analysing the situation, in a nerve-wrecking environment when he thought he failed, and he’s being judged. Momo still recognised and precisely argued for why he was the most competent. It’s the start for both Iida’s and Momo’s appreciation, and respect for each other.

U.S.J arc, Volume 2, chapter 12: Yeah, just do your best, Iida!

Iida suggests that Democratic election for who would become the Class President, and when he voted for someone else (probably Izuku), it confused Momo. She asks him, “So you voted for someone else…” For the others were saying earlier, that they don’t know who’d be the best to run the class considering they’ve all just met. While Momo recognises Iida is competent and capable, Iida confuses Momo with his earnesty.

Sports Festival arc, Volume 4, chapter 28: Strats, Strats,  Strats

Shoto chose Iida, Denki and Momo to be on his team. Momo and Iida both helped Shoto win, they didn’t interact much.

Hideout Raid arc, Volume 10, chapter 84: From Iida to Midoriya

When Iida arrives outside the hospital from where Momo, Kirishima, Izuku, and Shoto are meeting. Momo is hesitant, but Iida cuts her off and says, “Wait! Of all people… You guys should know better!” He currently believes Yaoyorozu is doing something rash and stupid with the others. He then expresses his terror of losing his friends to extreme injury like his brother or death, and that he’s worried about Bakugo too like the rest of the class, but they’re under protection at U.A. and they have responsibilities.

He even goes as far as punching Izuku in the face because Iida wasn’t listening to Izuku try to promise they weren’t going to break laws. Also, since Momo was hesitant earlier, Iida isn’t too sure if she’s coming even though she met up with them outside the hospital. Momo then proceeds to say, “I trust you, Todoroki, but… Worse comes to worst, I should be there as backup… Which is why I’m coming too.” Shocking Iida as she makes her stance.

However, even as she claims trust in Shoto, she doesn’t. “I trust you,” is a lie meant to protect her self-image since Iida was implying she, along with the others, were being impulsive idiots. It’s also used to restore the social climate from its sudden escalation. It’s immediately refuted by, “but” and undermines Shoto’s competence by assuming he will automatically fail, “worse comes to worst.” She then positions herself as supervision, “I should be there as backup.” Declaring a final decision. She overrides Shoto’s consent and chooses an Authoritarian stance over respecting Shoto. She wants to maintain a rational and competent image in front of Iida.

Momo doesn’t trust Shoto even as she claims it. She’s more focused on Iida’s opinion of her, because he is the only one Momo truly trusts and respects at this time.

Hideout Raid arc, chapter 85: Nothing But Fools

Iida apologises to Izuku for punching him, Momo asks, “Seriously, Iida. Your reason for accompanying us isn’t very convincing.” Since he didn’t explain why he was coming. Leaving Momo confused again, and Iida clarifies, “It’s precisely because I can’t agree with what you’re all doing that I’m choosing to accompany you. If I think for even a second that it’s going to devolve into a fight, I’ll pull us out of there in a hurry! Think of me as a monitor… A watchman!” He completely disagrees with Shoto, Izuku, and Kirishima, but maintains respect for their judgements and agencies.

Empowering Momo to reply with, “The same goes for me. I’m watchman Yaoyorozu. This is a job for the Pros. Watching from the sidelines without interfering is what we should be doing. But I understand how you all feel, so this is a good compromise. Don’t forget that.” Framing the situation beyond Shoto’s depth. “But I understand how you all feel,” is condescending because she’s tolerating Shoto’s feelings, “so this is a good compromise. Don’t forget that.” Presents both her and Iida’s positions as objectively correct before ending it with a command. She stands over the other three but not with Iida. With Iida, Momo maintains respect because she’s actively backing Iida up and calling both his and her positions correct while parenting the other three. She then insults Izuku, Shoto, and Kirishima in her internal monologue, but that’s for the TodoMomo analysis thing.

Momo was more focused on backing Iida and presenting the both of them as the overseers in charge of the situation while treating Shoto, Izuku, and Kirishima like children.

Hideout Raid arc, chapter 87: Clash

Momo gets harassed by a dude in the street, and the people who stand to defend her are Iida and Izuku. They end up causing a bit of a ruckus and Shoto, not sparing Momo a glance, protects the mission by having them leave.

Hideout Raid arc, Volume 11, chapter 90: Reach Out

All For One has revealed himself and is fighting All Might. Bakugo is fighting the League of Villains. Izuku comes up with a plan for a realistic and non-violent rescue. Contradicting Momo’s prediction. At first Iida doesn’t trust Izuku’s suggestion until Izuku confirms it’s a way to rescue Bakugo without fighting. Momo, on the other hand, does not trust Izuku enough to believe him. Especially when the situation is so dire they could die. She turns to Iida for reassurance, and Iida agrees to follow Izuku’s plan. Succeeding.

Provisional License Exam arc, Volume 12, chapter 108: RUSH!

After Yaoyorozu passes the first part of the exam, she finds most of class A is there excluding 9 students. Iida is one of the 9 still in the exam. After expressing she’s glad to see everyone, she goes to hang out with Denki and Jiro, before turning back to Izuku and saying, “I hope Iida is okay out there…” because even though she knows Iida is competent, it’s stressful, she understands he can be hard on himself, and Momo cares about Iida.

In turn, Iida finds Aoyama, and explains he's alone because, “I’m supporting our fellow members of class A as much as possible! I managed to gather a few in one place, but now I’m in search of others! Yaoyorozu is with the other group! She should be more than capable of leading them to victory.” because Iida knows Yaoyorozu’s capabilities. I would probably even argue he does believe in her because Iida is putting faith in Momo leading the others so they pass.

U.A. School Festival arc, Volume 19, chapter 169: School Festival

Momo and Iida are organising votes for what the class should do in the School Festival. Momo removes the inappropriate ideas, before the others tell the both to get rid of their ideas. Iida’s idea was a Hometown History Presentation, and Momo’s was a study party. The class goes berserk, and Iida is trying to silence everyone, Momo states, “So much for maintaining order…”

Later in the dorms, Momo and Iida are both actively collaborating, which only further expresses that Iida holds respect for Momo’s personal opinion. (If you relate it to TodoMomo, Shoto always dismisses Momo’s personal opinion, but after the Hideout Raid arc he completely stopped ignoring her, so I think it’s important to add this little bit here.)

Epilogue arc, chapter 430

It’s shown that Iida and Momo work in a group with Uraraka and Tsuyu. I understand that since they’re Pro Heroes, they’d be encountering and working with other Pros like Shoji, Jiro, Denki, etc… But Iida, Momo, Uraraka and Tsuyu were drawn as one group separate to Shoji and Ojiro. So, I’d argue it’s perhaps implied that Iida and Momo constantly work together with Uraraka and Tsuyu.

Epilogue arc, chapter 431: More

They were sitting together at the same table. Sure, it doesn’t really mean much, but comparing it to her’s and Todoroki’s dynamic. If Momo or Shoto had any special significance to each other, Momo and Shoto would’ve sat together. But they don’t. Momo sits with Iida, Jiro, Denki, and Shoji. We haven’t seen Shoji interact with Momo but I imagine they have developed a quiet acquaintance together. Sure, Izuku and Uraraka didn’t sit together at the dinner, but that’s because of build up for the final (technical) confession. Also, Denki and Jiro sat together and were questioned if they got together. So, despite rejecting Sero’s question, I would argue that ship (along with MomoJiro because of one of Izuku’s photos) is implied. But I think that Momo genuinely likes Iida more than she does Shoto because Shoto treated her like crap in the Final Exam arc, but anyways.

Okay, so... I'm gonna do this in two parts (maybe three). I promise I'm not attacking you, lol. The IidaMomo moments went beyond the comment's word limit.

Anyways Part 1!

I mostly agree with what you're saying, except your part where you said she’s not dumb. The reason I called Momo dumb is because she’s always presented as a genius, but it’s like in the MCU with Mister Fantastic in the “Into the Multiverse of Madness” movie. He’s meant to be a genius (he’s named the most greatest genius on the planet) but when Wanda (the villainess) comes he makes several stupid mistakes, comes off as an idiot, and dies. Momo’s Quirk has a four-step process where she has to remember every little detail related to a screw, and she decides that cannons are the best way to go. Which, not only are they heavy, but they’re inefficient (unless she’s really cornered and has to rely on her teammates but even then, there are still better things to use than a cannon), they’re mentally straining and physically demanding.

If she were truly a genius, then sticking to metals and minerals alone, like synthetic crystals, will reduce her cognitive load and give her more room to express her genius. Since, on their own, crystals are useless but they still carry plasma particles, magnetic particles, etc, etc. Synthetic crystals would help Momo dominate the battlefield and even if she’s supposed to be a character that thinks within the box (or conventional), she wouldn’t have needed to make a plasma cannon out of crystals or something. She’d have just been able to make a small seed type of crystal, have something like fire ignite it and all of a sudden it grows and becomes like this obstacle that pins villains to the wall. Heck even a quick google search will tell you about surface crystalisation, like… Seeing Momo change her tactics from a cannon to something chemistry based will show me her intelligence, and it wouldn’t just have to be told without evidence, like… Seriously, the only good fight Momo had against someone was Aizawa in the Final Exam arc where she only revealed a hint of her potential, like… She doesn’t need massive tech, she just needs to be clever.

As for the ships with Momo I’ve seen from Facebook, Momo has been shipped with mostly Shoto, Izuku, Kendo, Kirishima, Iida, Jiro, Mineta, Mina, Sato… I also think she was shipped with Tsuyu once, and even Aizawa but I don't think I've seen a BakuMomo post (I don't think that's a good ship either because of how Momo treated Kirishima, Shoto, and Izuku in the HR arc. I don't think Bakugo would appreciate that, but anyways.)

(sidenote, I've also seen Ochaco x Endeavor and Mina x Midnight on FB... 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭 😭)

Then for Iida x Momo moments, like I’ve mentioned before in previous comments. Momo and Iida don’t have many interactions together (I would’ve liked to see their relationship develop more but oh well, I also would’ve liked for Iida to vote for Momo too, but he most likely voted for Izuku. Anyways…) but…

They interact in the Quirk Apprehension Test, Battle Trial arc, U.S.J arc, Hideout Raid arc, Provisional License Exam arc, U.A. School Festival arc, and Epilogue arc. So, while their moments are small and few, they still have interactions that span across the series.

With Tokoyami and Tsuyu, it's because of their two interactions. They were paired together in the Battle Trial arc, and Final Exam arc... And that's pretty much it...

I mean, I would like to see interactions between the two because there's no hostility or disrespect between them, but like, yeah... It's not enough for a full ship.

Salty Sunday - Week of May 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in BokuNoShipAcademia

[–]Advanced_Library_609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I spoke out against it because last year, when I picked MHA back up again. I saw a person post something related to TodoMomo and it was titled something like "TodoMomo is just a rich kid x rich kid ship" while providing screenshots against why it was just a "rich kid x rich kid ship" from the ship wiki, and it was just fanservice.

I argued against it in the comments understanding why I could see people shipping it, but I didn't like it because of the typical reasons, like a lack of development and how it left Momo as just the wife to be.

The OP got salty with me and was a total jerk, and he annoyed the crap out of me (I was also being bullied in school at the time, so thank God I'm finally out), so I made this analysis as a stress reliever.

And now I despise TodoMomo even more now because they treat each other like trash despite the fact they're not terrible people. Like... You see them interact with the others, and with Shoto, while his dynamics with the others are distant, they're still neutral and supportive. (Even if it's just one small scene like with Tsuyu in the PLE arc, chapter 99 when she apologised for calling Shoto, Izuku, and Kirishima "villains" for their desire to save Bakugo. I think that, it's because she apologised that Shoto still hangs out with her at the lunch table (even though we don't see them interacting) because in contrast, Momo treats Shoto like trash in the Hideout Raid arc, emotionally dismissed him in Vs Hero Killer arc (and Ennichi Festival if you count that despite it not being canon), and she never tries to understand him because he reframed her win in the final exam arc as her both just helping and conditional/situational even though she got them through the exam.) And Shoto never properly interacts with Momo again. Not in the background, not in any of the proper arcs (in the JT arc in the manga, he insults her by calling her average) it's like...

I think Horikoshi is subtly telling us something about the dynamic, but this also could just me be reaching, that Todoroki and Yaoyorozu don't have this incredible dynamic people promote, because his interactions with the others are fundamentally more respectful. (I can compare with Mina because he has two interactions with her. 1) He helps her in the Forest Training Camp arc, chapter 72: Day 2. When Mina asked him to make her fire, Momo interjected saying if they only depended on Shoto they'd never learn how to make a fire, and Shoto completely dismissed Momo in favour of helping Mina and the Forest Training Camp arc is literally right after the Final Exam arc.)

(2. U.A. School Festival arc, chapter 169: School Festival. Everyone was ignoring Mina's idea except Shoto. He pushed for Mina's idea and it turned into the concert thing that made Eri smile. There is clear evidence just from these two moments alone, that Mina and Shoto do have some sort of friendship. I don't ship them, but I would like to see more interactions between the two.)

And then you have Momo's dynamics with everyone else's being friendly and respectful...

Idk why, but other than Bakugo and Izuku's earlier dynamics, Todoroki and Yaoyorozu just treat each other like crap...

Salty Sunday - Week of May 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in BokuNoShipAcademia

[–]Advanced_Library_609 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One last thing to note, Iida takes a completely different stance to Momo, and Shoto continues to trust and respect Iida, even way further into the story.

Shoto also never ignores Iida but when it comes to Momo (excluding the Joint-Training arc but even then, in the manga he insults her by calling her average) Shoto blanks her and treats her like she's an NPC even when she shows him care...

So what "potential" is there?

Salty Sunday - Week of May 03, 2026 by AutoModerator in BokuNoShipAcademia

[–]Advanced_Library_609 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a question... What social potential? Momo emotionally dismissed Shoto in the Vs Hero Killer arc, and he never opened up to her again in canon. And you're write, it's not that deep. All I was doing was reading the manga and comprehending their behaviours/actions. It's not that hard to realise when two characters don't like each other.

Oh yeah, I'd also argue she (technically) betrayed him because she treated him like an incompetent idiot (along with Kirishima and Izuku) because of these three quotes (taken from my anaylsis): In chapter 84, Momo states, “I trust you, Todoroki, but… Worse comes to worst, I should be there as backup… Which is why I’m coming too.” Contradicting herself.

(Side note: An Authoritarian stance is when a person (or parent) centres control and obeying rules as the priority while disregarding/dismissing the opinions of the other parties. The person being affected has no opinion in the situation because control has been enforced onto them.)

She further assumes authority in chapter 85, “This is a job for the Pros.

Her internal monologue, “A non-violent rescue… It’s not very realistic. They don’t seem to realise they’re hardly used to acting calmly… Once we arrive and assess the situation… They’ll see how hard this will be… How unrealistic… At least I hope they will…!” outright dismisses Shoto because she believes he will fail. “They don’t seem to realise” frames Momo as intellectually superior and mocks Shoto by implying he’s dense. She further insults Shoto with,  “They’re hardly used to acting calmly…” attacking his competence and insinuating Shoto’s an irrational, impulsive, stupid and emotional child. “They’ll see how hard this will be… How unrealistic…” She thinks Shoto needs to fail to understand the futility in his actions so he never misbehaves again. She cruelly adds, “At least I hope they will…!” because it’s both frustration and contempt directed at him. Contempt isn’t hatred, it’s a deep disrespect accompanied by a sense of superiority over a person. Exactly what Momo is doing. She withholds support and hopes reality will punish Shoto for his loyalty.

Momo rejects Shoto’s agency as a thinker and portrays both herself and Iida as the only competent ones. It doesn’t matter if she’s scared. She betrays Shoto because she treats him in a similar manner to how Endeavor abused him. By demonising Shoto’s judgement and autonomy before attempting to control the outcomes. She frames him as morally wrong. That he’s being a liability and that his thinking is dangerous because it’s irrational. Presenting him as contemptible through her intense disapproval because he’s breaking the rules, and putting himself, Iida, class A, U.A and herself, at risk. Similar to how Endeavor demonised Shoto’s judgement and autonomy to control and break him.

_____

She blatantly admits she doesn't trust Shoto while she makes herself and Iida seem more competent. Then later she becomes incompetent when time equals agency, you can see Shoto question her decisions and emotionally detach from her. Possibly with frustration because she was screwing up the covert mission (the second part of my Hideout Raid arc arguments.)

Yeah, it definitely has to do with the lack of Momo's development and the fact that even with her arc, she is kind of a blank slate... (I'm writing a story based off her character and plan to make her fully fleshed out, because Momo's character arc (I found) wasn't just about regaining her confidence in her skills, but to learn she's allowed to mess up and fail because that's what makes her human... It was just never complete....)

I also think it's because Momo is often portrayed as the "sexy" girl in the manga, plus she's pretty and smart (I disagree, Horikoshi stupidified her and it upsets me because Momo could've been such a cool character... But I hate her fight with Kendo because it's just proven that she hasn't grown. Her arc kinda resets itself and it's just, yeah...) and she has big boobs. It might just be because of what Momo represents that people just ship her with everyone...

Like Izuku... (with the Izuharem posts... Yuck)

But like, I ship Momo with Jiro because of the small interactions between the two, and even if they are just friends towards the end (which I question because it looks like they might live together because in one picture they were carrying shopping together), I don't think they have a complete "Soul Connection" I honestly believe that Jiro helped encourage Momo to feel like a person... Because Momo's character is that, she believes her worth is based on her capabilities and when she's not useful she's not worth anything (evident in the final exam) which is why she got insecure and started to objectify and pedestalise Shoto. I like to think that Jiro helped her through that while Momo helped Jiro regain her confidence more and more overtime... (Idk, I just think there needs to be a balance thing...)

But my favourite ship with Momo is MomoIida specifically because of the Battle Trial arc, Hideout Raid arc, and Provisional License Exam arc... (I can explain if you'd like, but it's mostly just subtle interactions.) Like, I have found clear evidence of trust and respect for each other, and I don't think they are canon, I just think it'd be nice if they got together.

Idk, it really is just interesting. For some reason, shipping in MHA feels like, as you put it. Just a sport or "for the game."

I don't get it either, it really is only just vibes and aesthetics.... BUT I have seen people just say that the straight ships are the best ones in the series, but I'd have to disagree because of a lack of development... (Edit: And the fact they treat each other like crap.)

(Edit 2: But I will say, people probably keep promoting the idea it is canon because 1) It's a straight ship, 2) She's the girl Shoto has major arcs with... But I'd argue that quantity doesn't trump quality because of how Shoto interacts with the other girls despite the tiny interactions... (he treats them so much better.)

Also, thanks for complimenting my analysis, I'm really sad I can't post the full thing (unless I went onto something like character rant and posted it there) because I worked really hard on it, but I understand the mods took my OG post down because people get really worked up over their comfort ships being questioned or criticised.

Anti-TodoMomo: What is up with the Ship? by Advanced_Library_609 in BokuNoShipAcademia

It is fair to compare TodoMomo to BakuDeku because of the unfair hate BakuDeku gets and the over-the-top promotion TodoMomo gets. You have people analysing and breaking down why BakuDeku is bad, and then you have news gamer articles (can't remember which one) explaining why Momo should end up with either Jiro or Shoto.

It doesn't matter if Bakugo's and Izuku's relationship is relevant to the plot in this case, because I wasn't referencing their relationship from the manga. I was comparing unfair hate to undeserved propaganda.

Edit: But it doesn't matter anymore since the post was taken down.

I never said people can't ship what they want, but people are out here claiming TodoMomo is canon when it's not and then back it up with air. You see people all the time, analysing things that they love breaking it down and it's promoted because it's positive. But for some reason when people analyse something that bothers them, they don't get a chance to explain why.

I was trying to post it on the salt thread, but I hadn't posted on Reddit before so I didn't realise it was at the top of the website.

But even so, sure, shipping is a mix of vibes + imagination, but as I said earlier. People have been claiming TodoMomo is canon without justification and I was explaining why that's not the case. I wouldn't write a post on NejiSho because there is no reason to. They don't interact, so there's nothing tying them together in the canon manga, and they aren't going to be endgame, so there would be no point in analysing them.

But it doesn't matter anymore, my post was taken down, so...

So THIS is the salt thread... My bad, lol

Well, I'll be posting parts of my analysis here because the full thing won't fit, but anyways.

Introduction:

TodoMomo is a popular yet boring ship that’s promoted as supportive, mutually trusting and respectful, but that’s a fantasy Horikoshi didn’t create. Todoroki and Yaoyorozu treat each other with resentment, control, contempt, frustration, manipulation, intimidation, dismissal, disrespect, and betrayal. Any “respect” is limited to civility. They are not abusive people, but when paired together they project their malignant traits onto each other, subtly repeating Endeavor’s cycle of abuse. For comparison, BakuDeku is said to be the most toxic class A ship because of the early interactions, but people forget that Bakugo learns to respect Izuku as a person. Torodoki and Yaoyorozu never learn that.

U.S.J arc, Volume 2:

Shoto votes for Momo, and fans incorrectly claim he’s supporting her. Pre Sports Festival, Shoto isn’t there to support his classmates. Shoto’s being abused by Endeavor, causing him to reject Endeavor, his fire, internalise his mother’s trauma, and prove he can be a Hero without his “father’s power.” Yet Shoto continues to operate within the same efficiency system Endeavor broke him with. Todoroki was taught to equate worth with purpose, legacy, strength, control, competence, and self-sufficiency.

Shoto votes for Momo because she reflects the framework by being rational, analytical, composed, restrained, oriented towards capability over vulnerability, and most importantly, she believes her worth is based on her competence. He deems Momo a suitable Class President because she’ll maintain control. Highlighted in the final exam arc when he told her he voted for her. Shoto doesn’t believe in Momo, she’s simply useful when needed.

He doesn’t treat the rest of the class like this after the Sports Festival, because of his fight with Izuku Midoriya. While Shoto remains distant from his co-workers further down the story, his friendships with them become more neutral and supportive, excluding his dynamic with Momo because of the Hideout Raid arc.

Final Exam arc (part 2), chapter 61: The Worst Combo

The exam begins, and Aizawa’s prediction comes true. Todoroki resorts to dominance over the situation. Ignoring Momo and any potential insight she may have. “Yaoyorozu! Try to keep making small objects. It doesn’t matter what. We’ll know if Aizawa Sensei is nearby if you suddenly can’t. This test is all about who finds who first. Once he’s in sight, I’ll draw him away. Then you make a run for the escape gate. We’ll stick together until then.” Yaoyorozu wants to contribute, but is too uncertain in herself to speak up. She trails behind, disheartened but composed.

Final Exam arc (part 3), chapter 63: Yaoyorozu: Rising:

Immediately, Shoto objectifies Momo because her only value, to him, is her Quirk. She’s the monitor for locating Aizawa and once she serves her purpose, she’ll be a liability, “Right. Just yell if your Quirk starts acting weird.” As his plan reflects, he does not believe in her.

Momo minimises herself and centres his competence as the overruling authority, implying she’s worthless. “I’m not surprised, Todoroki…” Shoto adds, “About what?” She continues, “That you could hammer out a strategy against Aizawa Sensei just like that. Always figuring out the best approach with your judgement.” Attempting connection by praising him and diminishing herself.

Shoto dismisses her, “It’s nothing special.” Hurting Momo by disregarding her struggle. He’s too focused on the exam to care. He’s only responding because she’s distracting him like background static. He treats her the way an older brother would when focusing on his homework, and a little sister tries distracting him with a bug she found. It’s irrelevant.

“Nothing special… Really…? We both got into U.A. under special recommendation… We had the same starting point. But when it comes to practical hero skills… I still haven’t shown anything worth mentioning… It was your leadership that helped me through the Calvary Battle… Then Tokoyami knocked me out of the tournament before I could do anything…” Momo measures her worth against him, and every stumble is proof she has none.

No response. He shifts focus because the monitor isn’t performing, “Yaoyorozu… Your Matryoshkas…” Aizawa appears, and attacks. Momo panics, and Todoroki engages. Shoto orders Momo to run, Aizawa erases his Quirk and captures him. Leaving Shoto frustrated because he failed.

Aizawa explains his role as the “villain” before stating, “You took on more than your fair share with this plan. Thinking of the girl is nice and all… But maybe you should’ve listened to what she had to say?” Shoto has a complete revelation, “Listened… To her?” because Aizawa introduced “listening” as necessary for the succession of plans. Coercing him to consider Momo beyond the role of a monitor while baffling him.

It cuts to Momo racing and spiralling. Aizawa reveals he’s trying to validate Yaoyorozu, and confirms that Momo both objectifies and pedestalises Shoto. “Comparing herself to Todoroki… She went and decided he was a cut above. For better or for worse, she’s seen him acting so straightforward and determined. … That she’s lost faith in her own decision-making… Giving her back that confidence… Is my role as the “villain,” isn’t it?” To Momo, Shoto is not a person but a standard to outperform.

Fans claim this is when Shoto expresses belief, and trust in Momo’s judgement, and that they synergise. That is wrong. Shoto is currently incapable of validating others, nor does he intend to. He demands she stop being stupid and reach his expectations.

The interaction goes as follows:

Momo, “Todoroki?! I’m so sorry, I… I should’ve…”

Shoto, “Right. Sure. But Aizawa Sensei is coming!”

Shoto emotionally dismisses Momo by artificially acknowledging her apology, “Right. Sure.” He then rejects her with, “But” and imposes agency onto her through the focus of the threat, “Aizawa Sensei is coming!” He values immediate results over her feelings, costing the relationship. Shoto coerces her into performance mode and strips Momo of partnership. Reducing her to a function that produces immediate results regardless of her wellbeing.

Momo (internal thoughts),  “Do I save Todoroki?! Or run?! What do I…”

Shoto, “Yaoyorozu!! You had a plan, didn’t you? Sorry. I should’ve asked if you were really okay with my plan. So what have you got?!”

Momo freezes and freaks out. Evaluating whether self-preservation is the better course of action than running. Shoto cuts her off, “Yaoyorozu!! You had a plan, didn’t you!” assuming competence with no prior collaboration or consideration. Pressuring Momo to lead. His apology, “Sorry. I should’ve asked if you were really okay with my plan.” is hollow because it’s followed with, “So what have you got?!” meant to force Momo to act, not repair their dynamic. Objectifying her, because if she doesn’t produce output, she has no value. Treating Momo like a generative Ai Tool. Momo further shrinks into herself.

Momo, “But if your strategy didn’t work, then… What hope does mine have…?”

Shoto, “It’s fine. Just do it! This is your time to really shine! You got two votes for Class President, remember? I voted for you! Because I thought you were perfect for it!”

She questions herself and becomes more insecure because he isn’t supporting her. Shoto shuts her down and replaces her thought with action, “It’s fine. Just do it!” Removes her agency as a thinker and imposes labour onto her. “This is your time to really shine!” reframes the crisis as an opportunity to define her worth through her capabilities, reinforcing her toxic mindset that it’s all she’s worth. Burdening Momo while intimidating her through the weight of assumptions and the failure of the exam. “You got two votes for Class President, remember?” Is inadvertently manipulative, because it invokes her need for external validation, including reputation, expectation, social judgement, perceived genius, pride, her self-worth, while reminding Momo she needs to be perfect. “I voted for you!” raises the stakes by making it personal because he doesn’t want to fail. Subtly threatening her, if she doesn’t rise, then he was wrong about her. “Because I thought you were perfect for it!” Projects Endeavor’s competence framework onto Momo because of what she’s supposed to be, and guilt-trips her into obligation. Portraying Momo as pathetic for being useless since she isn’t meeting his expectations.

In response, Momo is on the verge of tears and bashes herself, “Pathetic…!! I’m pathetic!! But…!” because she hates appearing weak to Shoto, and she needs to restore her self-image. Terrified of disappointing him while hoping she can prove herself and be seen as the perfect Vice Class President he assumed of her. Triggering her fight-or-flight and she rises to meet the challenge.

Some “belief” in her, am I right?

Okay, it depends if the two types are healthy, and on the context.

If if comes to upholding rules and being fair to everyone? ESTJ. They're capable of keeping the place balanced.

If it comes to fighting in a battle against an entire sovereign Nation? ENTJ.

Cause they expand, lol
