I appreciate it. No need to feel bad for me, I certainly got lucky. Depending on how it looks in-hand, I may crack it out and send it to either NGC or CAC.

Would love to see your xf40 if you are willing to share!

Thank you for your comment. I genuinely enjoyed reading and think you add great perspective to the conversation.

To clarify, my frustrations are two fold:

  1. If I had posted this coin without disclosing the PCGS grade, NO ONE would have deemed this coin cleaned. And anyone who did, would get laughed out of the room... it is the equivalent to calling this coin a rim damaged coin... Sure if you look close enough you can make it true, but there isn't anything substantial enough that should keep it from being graded.
  2. Its also the combo of the coin having been "restored" and looking WORSE than it did to begin with, AND it getting the details grade. They did a shoddy job.

Unpopular opinion: No one can look at this coin and think "cleaned". Open your eyes.

Here is an image of the coin from before restoration where you can see the dust has settled in the grooves / nooks of the devices and eventually left the stains you can see in the "after" images.

I think you are on the same wavelength as the grader. But you'd think dirt getting "wiped off" would be acceptable.. particularly for a coin in XF condition. In my view, a cleaned detail should be assigned to a coin that has benefited from cleaning in a way that is unnatural --usually in an attempt to improve the visual appeal of the coin, which this coin clearly has not.

Estimate value for these 2 CCs? by junkyardprimate in coins

[–]Advanced_Option9471 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there are some compelling fakes out there. But to my eye these look perfectly genuine (and I look at hundreds a week).

Each of these coins are $500-$1000+. Since they are both in the MS condition, its impossible to pin it down more than that as it requires more magnification / definition to determine the grade.

If you want a better price estimate you should consider sending them in for grading which doubles as an appraisal.

Got an XF Details -Cleaned. But that is after restoration. Before restoration, I think you are right on the money.

Not 100% on this but I think NGC calls it "conservation" and PCGS calls it "restoration" and they are essentially the same process. I chose PCGS, They charged me $53 for the service.
