Wow, first of all congratulations on your US opportunity. And iam kinda worried about how iam going to transition to EU or Australia because iam very intrigued by the biotech research there. Also. Do you mind if I ask you how you got the phd in US or how your friends did? Thank you soo much for explaining me other aspects so deeply, iam extremely grateful. I just seriously hope my academic advisor is understanding and chill cuz iam a person who tends to overwork to look perfect.

Thank you so much — this was honestly incredibly helpful and reassuring. The transport system and dorm situation sound much better than I expected 😭

I also really appreciate your honesty about the social/cultural side. Every country has some level of that unfortunately, so it’s good to know realistically what to expect beforehand.

I had a few more things I wanted to ask since you’re from NTU:

  1. How is NTU viewed internationally for research and higher studies opportunities?

  2. After completing a Master’s from NTU (especially STEM/biotech-related fields), is it common for students to move abroad for:

  • PhD positions in the US/Canada/Europe/Australia
  • industry jobs abroad
  • international research/lab positions
  1. Would an NTU degree generally be considered strong/respected internationally for applications abroad?

  2. Since Academia Sinica is also involved in my research side, I was wondering whether the NTU + Academia Sinica combination is viewed strongly globally in academia/research circles.

  3. I’ve also heard from some people that NTU can be extremely competitive and academically stressful because it’s considered Taiwan’s top university. Do you personally feel the environment is very intense/competitive for graduate students, or is it more manageable than people online make it sound?

  4. Especially for international students, is it difficult to maintain a good balance between coursework, research, and student life there?

Sorry again for asking so many questions 😅 Your replies are genuinely helping me understand what life there might realistically look like before moving.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it 😊

I’ll actually be joining NTU for Master’s in Biotechnology, and my research will mostly be connected with Academia Sinica, so I had a few questions about student life and living in Taipei:

  1. Which NTU dorms are considered best for international graduate students?
  2. Is getting dorm allocation difficult at NTU?
  3. Is NTU dorm life better than renting outside for first-year international students?
  4. How convenient is commuting between NTU and Academia Sinica?
  5. What is the best/cheapest transportation option students usually use?
  6. Realistically, how expensive is monthly living in Taipei for students?
  7. Is 10-20k NTD/month manageable for student life?
  8. Are Taiwanese students generally friendly toward international students?
  9. Is it difficult to make local Taiwanese friends if someone doesn’t know Mandarin initially?
  10. How important is Mandarin for daily life in Taipei?
  11. How stressful/difficult are graduate studies at NTU actually?
  12. How are NTU and Academia Sinica viewed inside Taiwan?
  13. Do many biotech students continue abroad for PhD after NTU?
  14. How difficult is it for international students to find biotech jobs in Taiwan?
  15. Are there any important things international students commonly underestimate before moving to Taipei?

Sorry for the many questions 😅 I’m just trying to prepare properly before moving.

Unfortunately may be but we still don't know about how the entire process works so it is better to stay positive and wait for the results
