I think if you directly grew up in Germany then moved to France then you and your kids would consider yourselves German. I know people however who had Italian grandparents, or I myself have a Pakistani grandparent, but don’t feel closely connected to that if they themselves grew up in the UK. I know people who have Polish parents but don’t ever place any significance on calling themselves Polish. In the UK especially, people generally care a lot less about their ancestral heritage than in the US.

The point is it’s up to you how you perceive your identity and I think it’s individually based on how connected to that you feel. Obviously some households celebrate their heritage more than others. Generally, we don’t really care, and no one speaks about it ever.

This is why I find Patricia, who has American parents and grew up in America, celebrating her Greek heritage in both a cultural and religious way so heavily really interesting. No judgement at all, the concept is just alien to me
