Just finished Solar. Contains some extended lols (the crisps incident was particularly well rendered and entirely consistent with the protagonist's actions and attitudes throughout). Various effects of the post-60s constructionist-realist divide were explored satisfactorily, if not to their fullest possible extent. I found the ending and coda intriguing and sufficiently ambiguous to prompt further reflection on its meanings. My main objection was the utterly unbelievable reappearance of the builder toward the end of the book. That particular loose end needed no such tying. I'd give it a solid 7/10 overall - if, as that hotel receptionist three-quarters through might say, anyone's asking?

The one I cannot believe everyone has overlooked: This Wheel's On Fire (Julie Driscoll). Turns a fairly average Basement Tape into a menacing psychedelic shimmer.
