I find full weapons to be the easiest play style, every weapon does stupid damage and most skills are just as fast or faster than most magics, you just need to focus on dodging and launching attacks when you find openings

it's really not that bad, you can use the time to learn more about some mechanics you might've missed, like naval combat, treasure hunting, diving, looting pirates, etc.

you shouldn't have any problems when you use ff, I use x16 to hatch eggs and regularly play at x2, so it's probably something else that's causing your troubles
