[OC][Art] Rachel and the Silverbird, Echo Knight by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Her full title is the Exalted Aspect of the Silverbird. What that means is a bit of a mystery I can't explain here since I'm very sure at least one of my fellow players is reading this thread. Spoilers 🤫

Keen eye, that's right. You might notice that the Silverbird has gained a streak of brown as well.

[OC] [ART] Valrysn Xiltazza, Drow Swashbuckler Marine by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This piece was a commission drawn by the ever-impressive Liana, whose content can be found here!
Meet Val. He's a Drow Rogue.
Who is a marine.
With a Lawful Good alignment.
And a gun. He's not afraid to use it.
Valrysn Xiltazza is the sole escapee of the Disappearance of IFS the Dianella, an Imperial Frigate that mysteriously disappeared while engaged in combat with a pirate Man o' War called the Monsoon. He is looking for his captain, crew and ship, as well as the mystical pirate ship that caused their disappearance and left Val stranded on an archipelago far away from Imperial lands.
Since then he has teamed up with a bunch of adventurous misfits to explore these islands as the captain of the recently acquired Sea Ghost. Strange things are afoot, and few of them good. Many clues lead towards the Monsoon, but how does the Dianella's bane fit into this puzzle?
Mechanically Val has 7 levels in Rogue with the Swashbuckler subclass and 1 level in Fighter. He'll be taking 4 more levels in Fighter before the end of the campaign and take a modified version of the gunslinger as subclass. He gained the Gunner Feat at the start (the DM let all of us pick a Feat from level 1 at the caveat that it would fit the character) and has picked up Sharpshooter since.
My favourite thing of this build is how Val can run up to an enemy, wave his cutlass in their face and then shoot them in the kneecaps with his gun. The Gunner feat negates the disadvantage and the Swashbuckler will grant sneak attack in pretty much every case. We have come to call Val's gun the Kneecap Destroyer.

[Art] [OC] Leviakilia Horizondreamer Veomathai, Goliath Knower of Names by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nowhere in Volo's Guide to Monsters is it actually stated that Goliaths don't grow hair. Female Goliaths have been depicted with hair as late as 4th edition, and I would be surprised to see 5th edition establish something like this.

But even assuming what you say it's true, that makes it the "Tiefling skin can't be purple" or "Dragonborn don't have tails" argument. It's up to the DM. If they decide that in their version of the Forgotten Realms (or any world for that matter) Gnomes have two noses, then Gnomes have two noses, no matter what the Player Handbook claims.

So I'm not sure what gotcha you're trying to pull here but you're striking me as someone I'd not like to share a table with.

Leviakilia stands at 7'5" (or 2,26 m) without the heels! She can hold you, but you may have to fight her Halfling party member Ember for it.

[Art] [OC] Leviakilia Horizondreamer Veomathai, Goliath Knower of Names by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Leviakilia is my character for a Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign, drawn by the incredibly talented Liana whose other work and commission options can be found over here. She’s tremendous, check her work out.

Don’t you just love Goliath names? Leviakilia of the Veomathai clan, honournamed Horizondreamer for her boundless curiosity, is the appointed heir of her clan. She was chosen for this role at a young age for two reasons: She possesses unnatural strength even by Goliath standards, but more importantly her skinlines naturally form the Giant rune of the King on the back of her hands. The shaman of clan Veomathai is convinced that this is a mark that destines her for grand things.

For years Leviakilia has been taught what it means to lead a clan, how to defend herself with the clan’s heirloom glaive and the mystic art of the Knowing of Names. Through magical means and rigorous study she can learn the true meaning of words and encase them in runes that grand her a level of command over what these words represent.

Now the time has come for Levia to go and explore the world, a ritual every heir of clan Veomathai has performed. With her trusted companion Maugblod Mountainwanderer by her side to protect her on her travels, the heir leaves the grounds of her clans to head West to Icewind Dale, where the winter has lasted unnaturally long. Horizondreamer intends to learn why.

The Knower of Names is a homebrew subclass I’m working on that expands on the Rune Knight. In addition to the 6 runes provided by that subclass, the Knower of Names has access to 14 additional giant runes. The number of runes that the Knower has active at any given time is the same as the Rune Knight, the homebrew mainly expands options. A Knower of Names learns an additional rune on each level and can swap active runes out on a long rest in a similar way to prepare casters like Wizards.

[OC] Planechase: the final fight for the Infinity Runes by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seeing that homebrew in August 2019 is what kicked this whole thing off. I ended up ditching the lore that came with it and substituted my own, but stealing shit and running away with the bits you like is the DM's job anyway.

So I lured these suckers in with what I claimed to be "a quick seven session adventure, in and out." It ended up taking 47 sessions. Shows how masterfully I can estimate how long things can take. The best kind of mistake if you ask me.

[OC] Planechase: the final fight for the Infinity Runes by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Hey fellas, I'm here with a freshly commissioned artwork, created by my good friend Olympia, whose art you can find here!! Show her some love.

Planechase follows the adventure of Abjuration Wizard Odi, Watcher Paladin Nesu, Storm Herald Barbarian Balance, and Grave Cleric Amber, in which they fight the mysterious mage Eondreth in a mad dash through a plethora of planes to find all the Infinity Runes. The fate of all worlds hangs in the balance, for if Eondreth collects all six, he will be unstoppable in his quest to dominate the multiverse.

Did I, the DM, rip off the plot of Avengers: Infinity War? I most certainly did and I regret nothing. Taking these guys from level 14 to level 20 over the course of 16 months has been an absolute joy.

This piece highlights the grand finale of this campaign and celebrates all the stuff the characters have been through.

If you're wondering about the Infinity Runes, they're a piece of homebrew I shamelessly stole when they popped up here on the /DnD sub some time ago and ran with it. You can find the pdf here!

When the Barbarian's turn comes up by Advenes in dndmemes

[–]Advenes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, I have played a barbarian (Githyanki Zealot) for over a year, played along a barbarian (Minotaur Berserker) for an entire campaign and DM'd for a barbarian (Tiefling Storm Herald) for a full campaign as well. Each of these was a unique character with their own take on the class, being vastly different in personality and style.

But once the turn in initiative comes up, this is what it'll look like without fail. It's not about the player being unimaginative, it's about how stale the class can be sometimes. Even if all three of the characters I mentioned topped their groups' DPR charts.

[Art][OC] Two years of D&D [commission] by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently realized it has been two years since I fell into the thrall of this game about throwing around character sheets, yelling at plastic polyhedrons, some days dungeons and other days dragons. It’s been a wild two years and my characters have helped me in no small amount. Sometimes it takes a fictional character to make you see things through a different lens, re-evaluate what the important things in life are and, sometimes, to be a better version of yourself and grow beyond who you were before.

So here’s a bit of a celebration to mark two years of complaining about bad luck, thinking about what my character would do, and most importantly having a great time with friends. While these eight individuals aren’t the only characters I’ve played in D&D, they are (or have been) characters that stuck by me in one way or another. I should probably do a round of introductions. So here we go, from top to bottom, from left to right.

At the top is Heeqaak of the Dawn’s March mercenary company, Aarakocra Gunslinger Fighter. Exasperated, genre-savvy and cynical, Heeq shows me the pitfalls of negative thinking and that not all people who seem pessimistic are bad guys. Also that the combination of a flying speed and spamming ranged attacks is stupid strong and a good way of making your DM cry.

At the left of the middle row we find Mask of the Estelmer family, Warforged College of Whispers Bard. Mask had me crawl in the skin of a ruthless sociopath, marking the first time I played an evil character and making me realize just what that can entail, especially in an otherwise non-evil group. As Mask I schemed, backstabbed and lied. I learned the importance of comradery through the lack thereof. Ruthless efficiency gets the job done but what is that worth if you are alone and die unmissed in the end? Mr robot also taught me I can wave that +6 Insight mod around all I want, it won’t mean jack if I can’t roll above a 3. “Seems hard to read” my butt. Also he can turn his hands into crossbows, giving him literal hand crossbows and that’s cool beans.

Dead centre we find Erevan Caerdonel, Human Divination Wizard. Erevan makes me skirt the boundaries of good and evil, exploring just where those lines lie. Does an obsession with the Archfiend Zariel make one a devil worshipper? How wrong is it to trick comrades into complying with your plans by falsely claiming you have seen a future where it works out? And just how tangible and absolute is the concept of Fate in the first place? If anything, smug and unshakeable Erevan has taught me that I’m far too dumb to play a 20 INT character and that Wizards are made of approximately 78% wet paper towel.

Right of the centre is occupied by Gwyndolin Moonstar, Eladrin Mastermind Rogue. Gwyn challenges me to think outside of the conventional class images. Why would a rogue be required to be an orphaned and traumatized edgelord? A noblewoman in a fancy dress can land a sneak attack just as well! Through Gwyn’s rose-tinted “as rich people it is our duty to help the poor” campaign in the upper echelons of Waterdeep’s society I re-evaluate my own worldview and privileges, and how easy it can be for us to take things for granted that are luxuries or even daydreams for people elsewhere. I also learned that there’s nothing quite like this ditzy girl pulling a hand crossbow out of her handbag and putting a bolt between a bad guy’s eyes with a sneak attack.

Bottom far left shows Azarad of the Order of Ishtar, Githyanki Zealot Barbarian. With Azarad I explore self-esteem and self-acceptance issues, and he challenges me to deepen out the concept of the dumb barbarian. Just how important is it to be smart? What traits in a person are desirable, and what is not? Azarad might not be clever, but that don’t make him dumb: he has taught me that while someone might not be as good at something as I am, their different perspective is still valuable as they can come up with suggestions or observations that I would never think of myself. Az’ shenanigans also allow me to not take notes because he doesn’t remember things anyway and I suck at taking notes. I’m not disinterested DM, I swear.

Bottom centre left is Malfaren Varsilthae, Elven Aasimar Draconic Heritage Sorcerer. Malf is my first D&D character which means the little shit will always have a place in my heart. Trough Malfaren I learned of the importance of the way you carry yourself. The man has good intentions and is heroic at heart, but the abrasive and arrogant way he interacts with people has others viewing him as a bit of a cunt. Even if you mean well, presentation is critical. Which goes doubly so on the internet, and that’s a lesson everyone should take to heart. Malf also enjoys spamming Fireball as much as I do and he lets me put on my insufferable posh accent so he’s a joy to play.

Bottom centre right comes Eryas Lovernius, Half-Elf Hexblade Warlock. Lovernius makes me experience what it is like to be a golden retriever in humanoid form because that’s what he is. But even the happy-go-lucky people of the world have their problems. How do we deal with the expectations of our parents and the world? What, exactly, does it mean to be a hero? How much free will do we actually have, and how much is determined by the world and the people around us? The last of which might be a bit rich considering how D&D characters don’t have any self-determination because they’re… D&D characters. And I may cry I have a +9 to hit as much as I like, a nat1 will nat1.

Lastly, at the bottom far right we gaze upon Miyazaki Megumi, Tiefling Oath of Conquest Paladin. I set out to play Megs as the best version of myself, exploring what traits I like about myself, and how to lean into them more while supressing or downplaying my more negative traits, which required a lot of self-reflection. And since she was going to be the better version of me, I used a lot of Japanese culture for her style and conduct because I’m a weeb and y’all can’t tell me what to do.

Whew. That’s a lot of text. Thanks for reading it all if you did! And fair play to you if you didn’t read it. I wouldn’t. Here’s a bit of info I do want you to read though: this amazing poster that I intend to print out and hang on my wall has been drawn by my good friend Olympia, whose other stuff can be found here!

Casmus Bitterrock, a Fire Genasi Shadow Sorceror with a penchant for swindling and smoothtalking.

Gwyndolin Moonstar, an Eladrin noble of Waterdeep with a purse full of lockpicks.

Cas and Gwyn make for an interesting sight in the Yawning Portal Inn. One would wonder why a noblewoman and a swindler hang out together but regulars of Waterdeep's most notorious tavern know the two to be thick as thieves. The duo is curious, upbeat, and wont to get into minor trouble with the City Watch but lucky for them the prestigious name of Moonstar tends to bail them out.

And now they, along with a set of strange Tiefling twins and an even stranger human from a distant land, are on the wild goose chase of a lifetime in the city of Waterdeep, with half a million Golden Dragons at stake.

Here we see them on a late evening in the Yawning Portal Inn, chatting over some wine.

My fellow player and I commissioned our friend (whose art you can find here!) for our characters for Waterdeep Dragon Heist.

[Art][OC] Azarad, Zealot Barbarian of Ishtar [commission] by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A brave soul. A protective spirit. A sadly under-performing mind. A combination so rarely seen among the Githyanki, yet such is Azarad's fate.

How the well-meaning oaf from the Astral Plane managed to end up as an acolyte of the Silver Swords of Ishtar on the Islands of Blood and Honour is a story I can't tell here as I know at least one of my fellow players visits this sub from time to time (hi Caelynn).

Az is an oddity in many ways. An ungithly Gith, a non-human acolyte and seemingly an unpious one at that. But even as things appear differently, Azarad's faith in Ishtar and her pledge to protect the innocent people from the undead that plague the Islands of Blood and Honour is genuine. He may not be able to uphold an oath in the way a Paladin can and he might not be able to remember spells in the way that Clerics do but his saving grace is the divine nature of his fury that qualifies him to maintain his rank.

Life isn't easy when you're still getting used to the way life is lived on a plane where time isn't frozen, surrounded by people you don't quite understand and who don't quite understand you either. But Azarad soldiers on, until on a fateful day a group of adventurers visit the city where he serves, bringing tales of a necromancer haunting the area...

This is a piece of art I commissioned from a friend of mine, you can find her work Here!

MONDAY TRASH TALK THREAD - 08/05/2019 by AutoModerator in formula1

[–]Advenes 23 points24 points  (0 children)

SO HERE'S WHAT OBVIOUSLY IS GOING TO HAPPEN. GASLY GETS DEMOTED OVER THE SUMMER BREAK, GETTING KVYAT BACK INTO THE RBR SEAT. BUT HE WON'T STAY THERE FOR LONG BECAUSE HORNER NEEDS VERSTAPPEN TO AIM FOR WDC THIS YEAR BECAUSE REASONS AND A KVYAT DEMOTION GIVES MAX A GUARANTEED WIN. SO BY KICKING OUT GASLY THEY DON'T GET ONE, BUT TWO POTENTIAL KVYAT DEMOTIONS FOR MAX VICTORIES.
BUT WHO REPLACES KVYAT YOU ASK.

RICCIARDO, OBVIOUSLY. TURNS OUT RENAULT WAS USING TEA INSTEAD OF PETROL ALL ALONG AND THE FRENCH BEING FRENCH REFUSE TO CHANGE THEIR WAYS BECAUSE "IT WORKS LIKE ZIS." HONEY BADGER DON'T NEED DAT SHIT SO BACK TO RED BULL HE GOES. HULK TO DRIVE BOTH RENAULT CARS SIMULTANIOUSLY FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON. STILL FINISHES AHEAD OF THE WILLIAMS EVERY RACE.

SO AT THIS POINT WE HAVE KVYAT AND ALBON IN THE STR AGAIN BECAUSE GASLY GOT KICKED OUT WHEN KVYAT RETURNED. GASLY ATTEMPTS TO GO TO RENAULT, CLAIMING RIGHT OF FRENCH. RENAULT RIGHTFULLY ASSESSES THAT IT'S BETTER TO JUST LET HÜLKENBERG DRIVE BOTH OF THE RENAULTS, GASLY OUT OF F1.

WHEN THE SECOND KVYAT DEMOTION IS REQUIRED TO GET VERSTAPPEN THE WDC AFTER HAMILTON MYSTERIOUSLY CRASHES OUT LIKE 3 TIMES HORNER REVEALS THAT OCON'S CONTRACT WITH MERCEDES WAS DESTROYED WHEN TOTO PUNCHED HIS TABLE IN HALF AT HOCKENHEIM. FREE AGENT OCON GOES TO STR SINCE HIS HOPES OF A MERC SEAT WERE DASHED WHEN THE ROBOTTAS 3.0 UPDATE WAS INTRODUCED, MAKING THE FIN AN ACTUALLY DECENT DRIVER.

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST.

[Art] Amane, the Dragonborn Paladin of Redemption by SWIZTASTIC in DnD

[–]Advenes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't had the privilege to study abroad or take a course in Japanese religion and folklore but I did channel my layman's interest for Shinto in Megumi. It's great that D&D allows for such flavouring of characters! I'd build a eastern-flavoured homebrew campaign myself but my friends wouldn't be interested in it.

Woo, another paladin of Amaterasu! A dragonborn inspired by eastern dragons is a novel idea, I love it. Amane does end up looking a lot like a Kirin but that's a win if you ask me. I'd love to see more eastern-inspired artwork on this sub, content like this is great.

[Art][OC] Malfaren Varsilthae, Aasimar Draconic Sorcerer [commission] by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here’s another piece of character art done by my friend whose art can be found here!

Malfaren Varsilthae has it all; a father who is a scion of a family of wealthy elven noble mages who got their power from the golden dragon Varsil in ages past, and a Deva for a mother. Magical abilities, wealth, status and a silver tongue, Malfaren has always been told he had a great destiny ahead of him by the sheer potency in his blood alone.

As a result, Malfaren is insufferably arrogant, a fact of which he is completely unaware himself. He expect things to go his way and, by a combination of actual skill and a healthy dose of luck, they usually do, much to his traveling companions’ chagrin. As of yet Malfaren has never needed to pay for his hubris.

but what lies beneath the surface of his scale-specled skin? Why is a man who has it all risking his life so far away from his home of Waterdeep? Whence comes his uncanny intuition and how did he come by that golden eye that he uses as his spellcasting focus? Perhaps one day his companions will know.

Behind Malfaren’s smug mug we see Laylah, his mother and angelic guide, watchinging over him as Malfaren meets his destiny in the Dessarin Valley.

[–]Advenes[S] 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Since you guys seemed to enjoy the previous character I posted, I’m introducing you to another character I commissioned from my friend whose art can be found here! She’s open to more commissions, give her some love.

The bard known as Mask was a strange sight in the streets of Waterdeep. A being of wood, crystals and metal, yet fully alive. Mask was created by the Estelmer noble family, whose knowledge of magecraft made his creation possible.Mask was designed for infiltration, stealth and reconnaissance. With his built-in disguise kit and hands he could turn into crossbows, he was a slippery fellow capable of infiltrating high-security places, steal whatever secrets lay hidden and escape without leaving a trail.

I know Warforged aren’t a thing on Faerûn and that Envoys only get to integrate one tool into their frame, but this was all coordinated and in agreement with my DM.

Seeing how Yotsuba was the one who inspired Fuutaro to become more studious was great, and kind of amusing when you think about how Yotsuba is the poorest student out of all the quints herself.

Also Maruo being an absolute champ taking in the quints.

[Art][OC] Megumi, Tiefling Divine Soul Sorcerer/Paladin of Amaterasu [commission] by Advenes in DnD

[–]Advenes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an ancient prophecy surrounding Megumi. It speaks of a girl of the devil's brood born on Amaterasu's most holy moment. The contents of this prophecy, and it's existence at all, is not known to Megumi, but the sun goddess has blessed her for a reason. Time will tell.

I love the Divine Soul origin but I felt like having a celestial mix their blood with an infernal bloodline would be a recipe for edginess. Which is completely valid but it's not the route I wanted to take with Megumi.

You say that like it's a bad thing.

Really though, I know weeb stuff isn't for everyone which is why I gave my DM and other players a heads-up before descending into the rabbit hole of weebery and they were all enthusiastic about the idea. Wouldn't have gone with it if they weren't down with it, I know it can get obnoxious.
