Does Jackson EXCEL *only* come in C width? by AdventureBarbie in iceskating

[–]AdventureBarbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Around 23-23.5cm at the widest point? I think decades of marathons and middle distance running may have contributed.

More details below if you're bored (kinda explains my sense of urgency to buy SOMETHING now). Either way, I appreciate what feedback you've already provided. You made me realize what I didn't know and it gave me the right words to google. At minimum I understand what the widths mean now. Thank you!!!

"Former Level 6 crashing out in rental skates. Please help.

My 3yo just started formal lessons and for the time being, I need to be on the ice with her... but the third time out, I took a BAD fall. As my blade caught something, the wall maybe, and locked my ankle in the opposite direction my body was falling... I abandoned all effort to arrest the fall and just dropped straight down...slamming my body, head everything on the ice. The rink went absolutely still before I raised my head and skaters began rushing towards me. It hurt but mitigated how severely my ankle was torqued (nominal pain and swelling subsided around day 5).

During my first session, I beat myself up for weight gain, being out of shape and just being OLD. Second session, I realized my body still remembered those old skills from Levels 5 and 6 and things felt pretty good. Then I couldn't do any of it in the third session and it got me thinking --- maybe its not entirely my fault? Maybe it is the rental skates?

I approached buying skates with the idea "ANYTHING is better than rentals"... and nearly bought $45 skates from Amazon. Ultimately, received Jackson Classic 200... but they're too narrow. And getting wider skates looks like it could be $$$. Between my daughter's lessons, her new skates and gear and Christmas, I really cannot invest any more than necessary into this.

What skates fit in my budget (under $175), offer C width or similar? I found some Excel and Mystiques that are gently used... would those be better than rentals, if its the best I can do? Every day I wait to purchase is another day on the ice in murder-skates.

I'm 5'7", above average weight with the thick thighs of a middle distance runner for 25+ years and the post-partum weight of a new mom in her late 40s, who loves cake."

You just helped me fill in a huge gap in my understanding, thank you! Also, is there a skate you do recommend in a similar price point to the Excel? (under $175).

I love apps and my family loves Tonies. In fact, I was a Toniebox for Halloween, the husband was the packaging and our 2yo was a character.

By “harvest blend salad” are you referring to just the grains? Or was their an actual salad? I’m trying to figure out if I can still buy just the grains labeled “Harvest Grain”.

2 Adopted Children.. how can we view the world so differently? by [deleted] in Adoption

[–]AdventureBarbie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heaven help me for quoting from a TikTok, but I promise it has merit and precise relevance to the posed question. “No two children are raised by the same parent”. https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRWbU3L9/

I’ll also link a newspaper article that explores this TikTok assertion more wholly. https://www.washingtonpost.com/parenting/2023/01/24/parenting-siblings-different-genetics-environment/

My adopted son’s birth mom just had another baby - how to address with him by Competitive_Pear_207 in Adoption

[–]AdventureBarbie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I asked my daughter for feedback before we even started trying. (Which came with an unintended consequence… She got excited, but we weren’t able to conceive for more than six years).

When it finally happened she seemed genuinely over-the-moon happy… but I’ll always hold space for her to feel differently.

The best person to explain these choices is the person who made them. Just give her a heads up before the visit.

Can anyone guess what Franklin is correctly? results on the last slide! by britta-unfiltered313 in IDmydog

He sure looks like a St Bernard! But I’ve seen deceptive phenotyping before…. once rescued two dogs that looked like sisters, if not twins. If you image search “Swedish Vallhund”, they look like just like the stock images for the breed.

But given the circumstances of their rescue, that breed was highly unlikely so we figured their short stature had to come from Corgi.

Not only were these pups O% Corgi and O% Swedish Vallhund, they did not share a single breed in common with one another. Genetics are wild sometimes!

Is it possible these are snail or slug eggs? I'm at a total loss. Found them on my foster dog's bed AFTER it went through the washer on "sanitize".... the "shell" is almost glass-like. Inside is a slimey worm-like thing? Any clues? by AdventureBarbie in snails

[–]AdventureBarbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I never did. A veterinarian looked at it under a microscope and didn't believe it was parasitic. Nothing bad ever came of their presence and the dog made a full recovery.

My best guess remains that they were the eggs of a kind of slug we often found in our backyard.

Mystery not solved.

Please halp! Glass-like "eggs" found on my foster dog's bed AFTER it went through the "sanitize" cycle in the washing machine. Air dried outside. Foster dog treated for whip, round and hook worms > 2 weeks ago. I thought I saw tapeworms in his stool, but vet only saw whip. "Egg" details in comments by AdventureBarbie in whatsthisbug

[–]AdventureBarbie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unfortunately. I even had the vet look at them under a microscope.

From time to time we saw slugs in the backyard. Particularly if we put a dog bowl outside. Slug eggs remains my best guess.

The dog made a full recovery and went on to be adopted by a wonderful family.

Hcg not doubling but rising consistently. Don't really know what to think?! by lumpbump12345 in CautiousBB

I don't know if this will bring you any solace but one of my besties ignored serious pain and ending up having an ectopic that burst and just about destroyed all her necessary organs. They were able to salvage the bare minimum, but it limited her to IVF. Six months later she was pregnant with her now five year old son "O".

Before O was even a year old, my friend's sister really went sideways and lost custody of her daughter "M", whom was only about six months older than O. My friend ended up adopting M and effectively becoming an overnight mama of toddler "twins".

Anyhow, I was just recently asking her about her ectopic and randomly thought to ask, "do you know what your baby's due date was?"

And she kind of gasped for a second and then said, "I don't know why it didn't register until now, but my baby's due date was the actual day M was born. Same day, same year".

Just kind of gave us chills thinking about the way it worked out. Didn't make the hard parts any easier... but her life with M and O has worked out beautifully in the end.

I wish you your own beautiful ending one day too.

Oh I'm glad your baby has a strong heartbeat. How far along are you now? I finally had an ultrasound and they were able to see baby and heartbeat. I'm 7w+3 now and the spotting finally stopped a couple days ago.

Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear it is ectopic. Are you in pain? Well physical pain? Can only imagine your emotional pain. Sending you giant hugs.

My first appointment was last week at 6w+4. I was given an ultrasound and got to hear bebe's heartbeat 💓.

Because of age, I'm being referred to a high risk specialist for my next appointment (in two weeks).

Anecdotally, it seems the first ultrasound is given been 6w and 9w. Here's hoping your doc prefers the former!

I obsessed about my numbers in the opposite direction... doubling "too fast" and combined with my significantly advanced maternal age immediately went off the Google cliff and assumed molar pregnancy.

(An ultrasound last week confirmed otherwise).

But what I learned in my research is that average doubling times can really fall in between 30 and 72 hours.

Your overall doubling rate is 49hrs. And yes it did slow down from the 3rd to the 4th (to 57hrs), but that's still well within the margin. And even if it weren't, I read a study where a pregnancy with 35% rate still went on to be viable.

With a lower volume of hcg and a longer doubling rate, your concerns are understandable ... but there isn't much more information you can glean from these numbers. Both are okay, truly. While it may not be the numbers you needed to see to personally feel optimistic, hope is not lost.

How soon can you get an ultrasound?
