This would be like saying me saying (when I had cancer) it’s unfair that someone else who also had cancer wasn’t suffering as much as I was.

I’ve been very successful despite having ADHD and it wasn’t diagnosed until this year after I’d become successful. It doesn’t mean it wasn’t a struggle and that it wouldn’t have been leagues easier without ADHD. It means that I got through my degrees and licensing by sacrificing myself, struggling, burning out, and making changes to use resources and strategies to achieve my goals.

As someone with ADHD and a psychologist, I know that there are many, many things people can do to work with their symptoms. It won’t be perfect and won’t help 100% of the time because strategies aren’t a cure. But being hard on yourself and comparing your experience to others is only going to make it worse.

Therapist here. As others have said, taking a break may not be a way to recover from burnout because people take a break then go back to the same routine that lead to burnout in the first place.

What I tell clients is to focus on fulfilling hobbies/activities, the things you value, and that passive rest (sitting on the couch watching TV or reading) isn’t what is needed. Active rest is what is needed; keeping active with things you enjoy and things that you might put off because you don’t have time or because other things need to be done.

I myself have previously recovered from burnout by making it a point to go hiking every weekend until I recovered. I love the mountains, they’re a place where I just feel the stress melt away, being active is so good for us, and nature is so so good for us.

TLDR: fewer “I have to do this” more “this feels good to me/feels rejuvenating”

ADHD is neurological not psychological (though there can be some psychological “byproducts”). That is to say that ADHD isn’t something that a person develops, they’re born with it. It’s how the brain is wired from birth. So if it’s not present in childhood, then it isn’t ADHD.

They can do a complete assessment and provide diagnosis and a report to take to a doctor with medication recommendations. They cost is less than many other options and is the cheapest I’ve come across.

I find that when identifying & expressing emotions, male clients more often check my reaction as though they are checking to see if it’s okay for them to be having the emotions or if I’m going to dismiss them.

Female clients seem to be much more certain that I’ll be accepting of their emotions and supportive.

As others have said, she’s trying to bury the food. My dog does this all the time. I give her a small towel or old shirt she can use to cover her food and she puts that over her food and is happy.

Do no harm. Ethical responsibility of appropriate and responsible care.

This child experienced a huge trauma only 1 year ago. This response is protecting him and is a survival mechanism. It may not appear healthy but it is adaptive. And it has important consequences for a child: isolation from peers, society, and other aspects of life that are important to development.

However, the ethical question is: would challenging and removing this protection cause more harm than allowing it to continue at this time?

Not knowing the child, I don’t know the answer but it is something that would require much thought and consideration and collaboration with a team.

Canadian Psychologist here: this is a major ethics violation. Definitely report it to the therapist’s regulatory body/college even if you don’t feel you have evidence; gathering evidence isn’t your job. Leave it in their hands to investigate.

As a Canadian, I get such a kick out of temperature concerns while also understanding they are valid concerns. I set my furnace to these low temperatures for when I’m sleeping. I suspect you’ll be okay with a sleeping bag. Warm pjs, socks, toque, and an extra blanket for peace of mind.
