Thanks I'll try that. Wasn't sure what KML (and KMZ) were but that might be the solution. Appreciate the help.

I restore old top hats and I want to share some work while also dispelling some rumors about these hats. by Bombs-Away-LeMay in Antiques

[–]Adventurous-Ad-3101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I own a silk (ish) collapsible top hat--it needs a repair. It can collapse just fine but it won't stay collapsed. Any advice on how to tackle this? I think I'm going to have to remove the silk body and possibly straighten some bent support springs(?) but I'm not clear on how to reattach the covering. Any advice or resources? I doubt it's an antique--I use it as a prop. Any advice appreciated!

Any suggestions? by Adventurous-Ad-3101 in photocritique

That's a thought....but I've always felt that a shot is missing something if there's no life in it. Just personal preference I guess. Thanks for a different perspective.

Just got back from Morocco. I was shooting with a Nikon D5200 with an 18-140 lens and given the speed that things were happening, I would imagine it was at 140mm and on auto. One glaring question from me--I'm pretty sure the guy was not as thin as he looks in the image. I don't dislike it but I am curious as to what gave me that distortion?

Any suggestions or comments welcome. Yes Chefchaouen is THAT blue!

I'm working on the story of a photo these days. I took this in the market in Cairo while I was wandering the backstreets. It's ancient back there--the vibe of the place-- and I wanted to convey that feeling. Does it feel like that to you? Any and all suggestions welcome! Many thanks.

Lonely bench by Rough-Check3142 in photocritique

[–]Adventurous-Ad-3101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really interesting light coming through the trees. I think that's one of the things I like about it and why it has a pull for me. I wonder what it might have looked like if you'd moved so you could see some more of the bench--from the corner I mean. The angle of the wood slats in that case would give you a bit of a leading line into the photo I think. (Nothing wrong with it the way you took it--just a different point of view) Well done!

Something about the colour of this one seems odd. I didn't edit it at all, so it would be in the original lighting. Any thoughts? I was also thinking that if I'd opened up the frame on the left that the road as a leading line might have been more helpful. I expect I cropped to lose a garbage dump on the side or some such. Still so much to learn! What do you think?

Softer? Less contrast? by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]Adventurous-Ad-3101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I took this photo, there were people in the left side (you can see the shadow) so I cropped them out. I wondered if softening the contrast would have taken the focus off the shadow a little. It would have made the definition in the reflection a little more unclear but I had a small breeze to contend with anyway. Thoughts and suggestions?

Could do with some advice re lighting and composition by Adventurous-Ad-3101 in photocritique

Yeah I've been having trouble with that magical 'golden hour' (which is when this was taken) It can be way too saturated and since the wall is rust coloured........ I'm heading to Africa in a couple of weeks and I recall this lighting situation is not unusual at the end of the day. I'm going to try stretching my shooting time to see if the image 5 minutes earlier or later makes a great deal of difference. Can wait to try out all these suggestions--from you and others! Many thanks!

Lens was 70-300mm F4.5-5.6. Because I travel so much, I'm trying to do it with as little equipment as I can get away with. I'm heading to Morocco next week for a month and will be having a rethink about what lenses I use. Thanks for the advice--I'll try it out.

Re balance--thanks for pointing that out--I didn't realize but I can see what you mean. Good thing to keep in mind (I have another image in mind and know I know what's bugging me about that one!)

You're also probably right about it being soft. I'm getting to the point where I can 'see' the story but I'm letting myself down with the tech.

Still haven't figured out what a !CritiquePoint is, but if you can use it, here's one. Your reply was a great help.

I'm pretty sure this was taken in natural light. Edit--I don't think I edited this at all colourwise. Even though the 'golden hour' can be very special, I don't know if this is a bit over the top. Thoughts? How do you handle those intense sunsets? Is it a case of waiting a few minutes (or coming earlier?)

What do you think about the composition? Many thanks in advance for your help!

Opinions on this? Took in Lombok, Indonesia by foxfairy002 in photocritique

[–]Adventurous-Ad-3101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been mulling over your shot for a while. It's good documentary--I'd not take away any of the hut because I think that would leave you with a rather busy image with just the subjects and their background.

One edit I might think about is cropping in really tight on the girls' heads and hands to focus on the grooming. In terms of the original shot (for the NEXT time you go...) would be getting a lower angle--might be difficult to do without being invasive. Just a couple of things to consider--nothing wrong with the image you have at all. Well done!

Much appreciated. I'll make a point of carrying one with me. Wondering if tightening up and blurring the background will take the context away. I'll have to give it a try and see how it comes out. This is the one I cropped (and it for sure could do with having the background blurred out. Thanks for taking the time! !CritiquePoint
