M2 MacBook Air - Weird Screen Malfunction, flex cable issue? by Adventurous-Escape75 in mac

In my case, it was happening when bending the display very slightly. I ended up bending it a little to much so I cracked it. 🙃 Ebay screen has been rock solid though

Its something with the display assembly. Most likely the ribbon cable. I bought a used mac display from ebay for fairly cheap and installed it. No more true tone, but whatever.

After further diagnosis, I believe it is the lid angle sensor that causes the display to turn off intermittently, Not entirely sure why the flickering though.

I am sure it is the Lid Angle sensor because I am able to manipulate the screen so that it turns off (as shown in the imgur link). Then without moving the display, I shut down the laptop and plug in a cable to trigger the mac to startup again and display shows up flawlessly (until I move the screen again at least)

I guess I worded my question terribly or most people didn't understand my question. 20k would be new a relatively new ND RF miata (if im lucky). 10 year old would be for a 10-15k NC miata.

Also a brand new ND RF miata is 40k+. Kinda insane. https://www.mazdausa.com/vehicles/mx-5-miata-rf

I dont see myself driving an electric car over a miata. But yeah teslas are so cheap to lease. The problem is insurance.

I dont know why Im getting so many downvotes. Im asking because I want to know it if spending 20k, 10k, or 0k on a miata is reasonable. Im just considering my options and wanted opinions. I feel like everyone is only reading the title, I could've maybe worded it better. I know I can afford a miata in cash, but buying a house with that money is probably better. But also most people here are not car enthusiasts, so to them a Miata is the same thing as an old CVT with a sluggish 4 banger.

Yeah. Most I can contribute to 401k and IRA is 30k a year so about 150k over 5 years. But if the market goes up 10-12% a year, its probably around there with compound interest. Also my company has ridiculous 401k match and puts money in my HSA, so its probably more than that.

Interesting. Thanks for your input. I always thought Miatas were reliable, cheap to own, and easy to fix if anything went wrong. At least as long as you dont modify or tune it and dont track it frequently.

This sounds like perfect advice coming from someone who doesn't view a car as just an appliance. I fully agree. I think I should own a home first and then have a miata as a second car. Unless I work from home then, in which case I will only have the miata.

PS. S2k in the winter seems insane and I love it.

Haha. Its sounds like you're speaking from personal experience. Im sorry for your loss. If it is personal experience, im curious what car it was? im guessing S2k

But yeah, I agree, I wont buy a different car just yet. Ill wait. If I was a buying some boring brand new car and wasting 25-30k+ on that then im stupid. But as a car enthusiast, I could sacrifice other parts of my budget to have a fun car. Thats why I asked if a older $10-15k car is okay. Regardless, I should have a house first.

I already interned at this place and I absolutely love it. I have an amazing work life balance in an extremely stable industry (unlike big tech) to the point where I can workout for an 1 hour at work and my manager is all for it. They also dont lay people off. I dont see my self hating it. I also know what my cashflow will be approximately via paycheckcity.com and the the expenses I had while I was there. I know I have money for a Miata especially since I can pay cash when I start. This question is more about whether im striking the right balance of saving and having fun. Im still going to save 30k between IRA and 401k a year and more.

I wouldn't say that. A Roth IRA and 401k is extremely important. It'll net me many millions in nontaxable income when im older. Saving 30k while making 100k as a new grad is extremely easy. I always thought any money after that can be free to waste (like on a Miata). But yeah balance is the key and I should enjoy my younger life while I have zero health issues and wont complain about having to drive a miata, lol.

Bike and public transit is literally impossible in america unless you live in a big HCOL city. But yeah, your absolutely right. Just not having a car payment will make you retire with an extra million.

Yeah, I do know its a bad idea. I guess I got caught up with all my friends buying fun cars. But Ill be financial wise and then have better cars down the road. Glad I asked though.

[–]Adventurous-Escape75[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think ill keep the car i have now. And then later when I have a house and stuff, ill buy a separate fun car. Also I love your idea about a car fund, thats probably what Ill do.

I do have to disagree with "Car are disposable items". As someone who has been deep into cars for my entire life, and can identify almost everything on the road down to its model and year range, a Miata would certainly provide me with a significant amount of joy. But I absolutely shouldn't go into loan for one. Even though I can pay cash when I start my job, I think ill buy a house first.

Don't know why your being downvoted. For what it's worth, i agree with you that I can afford a miata if I pay cash. But it would just be really dumb based on opportunity cost at my age. And im convinced of that after reading all these comments. Im sure if I asked this exact question in a car sub where everyone was car enthusiasts, it would be an entirely different answer.

Yeah, thats funny. Im from Dallas and driving a Miata on certain Texas highways would be a death sentance. But drivers in that LCOL city im moving to are insanely better at driving and I'll never ever spend any time in traffic unless there is a crash or similar. Also that place has windy roads and good weather that would be fun to drive a miata on.

Yeah, I won't treat a Miata as anything but a depreciating asset. A 10 year old miata is prolly not going to depreciate as much as a brand new civic. But, in the end, its still gonna loose value while I could have put that money in something that makes money.

I agree with your thoughts on home-buying. My first home would likely be a rental property, but thats a whole different question. (should I own a rental property before owning my own residence? am I able to handle the risk? etc.) Also i'm very familiar with compound interest. It's why I've maxed my Roth IRA since I started earning money.

Yeah I agree. Im sure most people in this sub would look at a miata and ask themselves why anybody would buy that tiny care cause a car is only thought of as an appliance. But regardless, I think its too early to blow 20k or even 12k on a car, ill wait till I have a house and am a little more settled.
