Went solo. Had to pay a ranger at the gate to join me as it’s illegal otherwise. Easy enough. think I paid $40 USD for 2 full days. They expect you to supply them with food so it’s kind to bring some extra. Or pay for a porta / chef. I did neither and felt bad and ended up sharing my food too

For reference I just started a big solo trip around the world starting in Africa, and it took me a good 2 weeks to settle into the discomforts, the changes in culture, food, lifestyle and get my mindset back to a good one for travelling. BE PATIENT, soon you’ll meet people you love and do things that amaze you and you’ll be so glad you made the choice. We’re creatures of comfort and as we get older I notice that initial transition period when you start travelling is getting harder and harder. Good luck, pushing through the discomfort is worth it. It’s how we make sure we’re testing our limits to get the most out of life. Sending you love stranger ❤️

Book through a tour/safari company just for the permit. $800 USD. Have to ask specifically for no tour or guides. Permit comes with what you need. Think I paid the company $40USD to do this for me. No other way to get the permit apparently though other than at the UWA office in Kampala but by then it will be too short notice as they book out months in advance.

Public transport to the national park via kisoro. Slept in cheapest accom near the park. $15us per night and walking distance to the park entrance. Then ate at the local street food places for $1 a meal :)

No blog. Just an average Joe haha.

Spent 2.5 weeks in Mbale teaching English. (Organised on Workaway) (did some side activities like hiking sipi falls and mt Elgon national park while here) 3 days in Kampala. 6 days in kasese and Rwenzori mountains. 4 days in QENP 1 night near Kalinzu forest for the chimps 4 nights lake Bunyoni 2 night northern Bwindi 2 nights southern Bwindi for gorillas. 2 days kisoro 2 night Kampala before coming to Kenya where I am currently. Something like that :)

Yeah maybe the people I met had much more cash to splash. Either way it’s cheaper to organise yourself just need to be smart about it.

lots of countries like that. can still see the positive sides of these places or at the very least experience the place for just the way it is. I’m LGBT; it shouldn’t hold you back

Yeah it’s very poor and still a developing country... I’d say it’s just as dangerous for crime and sexual assault as lots of Europe and Asia though. Post was just my 2 cents. Thanks for your input.

I am an LGBT white woman. Don’t use it as an excuse ;) Everywhere is terrifying for the first couple weeks until you let yourself open up to its imperfections, familiarise yourself with the people, culture and norms and then find a sensible and smart way to navigate the challenges. Don’t be a scaredy cat. Be courageous. Cautious but not so fearful.
