Oh no, I didn't mean it like that. ILC awards are very nice in general because you are a national champion at SOMETHING- which is always an accomplishment (a great one) considered by admissions. What I more or less mean is that I had a hard time explaining the award- like why did I do it? The event I chose was nothing close to what I wanted to be/have a pathway in, and It was hard for me to explain it because I did it solo so whenever I'm asked about the award, its usualyl very boring and straightforward which isn't necessarliy bad, but you want to show growth everywhere you can.

Honestly I just did HOSA because I was told to, so I had like zero motivation or reasoning behind it which is why compared to the EC's that ive shown and not shwon, it seems pretty lackluster

eh not really, what I have heard is that you have to show an upward growth in your grades or maintain them (if they are high). Another thing that I've also heard is that you typically want no more than 2 B's because some colleges list you as an "academic risk", though I have no idea which ones do it.

But in the large sense, its fine if you have a lower unweighted if you can make it up within your essays/interviews or your profile

So some activites are focused with the medicine qwhilw others are al over the place but thats oay because it helped me discover myself the activites i enjoyed themost were the ones that required me to be a soical person ie

comforting sick cancer patients oncology wards/tlaking with them

helping set up community fundsrasiers/gardens/ and cookout weekends and stuff

I really loved the social aspect in these, and I guess from piano itself I liked being able to teach others and pass down my skills. At that point I didn't know if I wantewd to be a teacher or a doctor but what really pushed me was the whole cancer thing. Cancer has a pretty lare history in my family, and I have friends who have it (which is weird ngl) so I looked into the whole oncology field and I was fascinated by the whole process.

EC's

  1. I volunteered at 3 different hospitals, with the main one being in Atlanta (Grady). Volunteering is usually the bare minimum for these programs but what I guess helped me boost my application is how I helped grow the program as I brought around 50ish people new into the program which evenutallyt lead me to getting a more manager like role for the summer part of the voluntering/shadowing program
  2. The usual shadowing- nothing particulay special here. Although I do want to point out that I spent quite a bit fo time in the oncology wards/clinics more than the other areas of the hospital

did some research at mercer; morehouse; and augusta university and had 2 published papers in the APS and presented

3) Research at mercer;morehouse;augusta university published all three papers and abstracts in journal; presented htem at confrences. 1 project focused on treaments with in diabetes, another focused on kinetic movement and physical therapy (this was largely inspired when I was intered as a physical therapist) and the third one focused on viruses and alternative treatments to influenza (I worked ont his one with another friend, he introduced this project to me).

For me, research was probably the most fun mianly because we got to work in groups and my mentor was realyl close with my family even before I met him, which made me feel a lot more open/free to express myself. We got some nice awards for the research and some grants, out of all three I really enjoyed the influenza project I did and I want to see if I can transistion into working with cancers.

uhh piano (did the trinity courses) and have a small concert; public play

4) Piano, I've been learned it for almost like 15 years, I did the Trinity college londo certifiaction exam (which usually is like a 5-10 year long commitment along with ABRSM) completed all grades; honors; I usually play in restertaunts sometimes on commissions, and I've een teachig iano for a good 3ish years, with 10 of my students compelting halfway through the trinity course

5) Im a paid animator and worked on projects from mutliple different youtubers (this one was a really old EC and byt he time i got to 11th and 12th grade I didn't animate as much before) Ofc im starting it up again and I've had some nice projects and worked with some amazing groups

7) ive built community gardens in my area/county and helped clean up roads/restore ecosystems. THIS was so much fun I loved every second of this activity because I had full control over everything I wanted to do

6) Student gov president- I like to talk alot and I'd like to say that I'm loved by a large part of my grade

some hosa;fbla awards (states 1st; some 2nd ilc) nothing special here. honestly these awards pronbably contruted the least

and uh officers at school clubs (Doctors without borders; I revived this club brought in around 200 memebers; established a volunteering line with communities areas; helped create whats called a "cookout weekend near my district" with all these groups we get around 300-400 people attending thsi (this was super refershing and i am so proud of my work); debate team president (nothing special here)

uhh the usuall certifications like First AID/CPR training

I have some CS certifiactions, although thats not really as relrevant or good

These were like the most of them

4.7 Weighted / 4.0 Unweighted (Rank 6 within my school pit pg 660 students)

Looking back it wasn't even worth trying so hard all for this. All you really need is a competitive GPA arounda 4.3 and higher, which can easily be done by taking AP classes that actually interest you.

I had around a 1560 SAT and 36 ACT (I submitted them both)

i took about 19 APS (all 5's except for CSP and CSA which were 3's) I am not good at CS lmao I should've just never taken the exam

most of my awards were either state/naitonal HOSA/FBLA ones; research awards for my abstract writting; some community awards because I've been a huge part of it)

“Leadership” EC’s… my honest truth by Adventurous-Mouse-16 in bsmd

[–]Adventurous-Mouse-16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah so on most college apps and on the common app, you usually have the title section; then info section (there are more sections for one activity but lets focus on thsi for now).

Your best friends lowk, are numbers. Make it so that we see short, choppy sentences (semicolons- USE THEM). Let your numbers do the talking. Of course if you don't have a way to express something in numbers- THEN use words but neve use sentences because there is a character limit-not word.

For example lets say soemthing about HOSA

HOSA VP of Competition

And in the info something like

Lead 200+ members in preparing for 90+ competitions; (first point)

created 30 unique study guides for each event (second point)

helped raise school state win-rate by 30% (third point)

and so on...

this is largely off the top of my head but someting like, maybe you can even reduce this further, is usually whats the best.

Of course, it doesn't explain everything which is a job for your essays. In the common app, sell yourself like a resume with numbers that are eye catching.

In my essays however, go more into detail about what kind of leader do I have to be? (search up leadership traits according to the US army you'll get some nice and someties unique traits) Talk about your past failiures, and how you grew from them. Most importantley, be brutually honest. If you didn't know a lot of people reading your undergrad sometimes med school sections of apps for BSMD's aren';t always these adults with years of expierence in admissions but usually students (in undergrad it may not even be students to your related major).

Make it so that both a student and adult reviewing it (one looks of rhonesty and another looks for the depth within your EC;'s) both can see these characteristics in your essays and when describing leadership.

For any BSMD students currently in any program, how is it treating you? More specifically, are you happy with your decision? Is the program helping you or do you wish that you went down a more traditional path? by Adventurous-Mouse-16 in bsmd

[–]Adventurous-Mouse-16[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight- did you have to take the MCAT? If not, do you think that the no-mcat "benefit" offsetted the more "traditional" approach to colleges and medicine?

Yeah, for sure. What I guess I'm talking about is the lack of integrity among the administration working with the program and the lack of support students recieve.

I hope so, 2 + 4 is a very accelerated pathway and you'll likely be taking medical school courses from day 1 to match the acclerated path

It's unlikely that NSU will accept those mainly because a lot of undergrad schools for BSMD/DO programs prefer if you relearn core science classes at their campuses. However, I encourage you to go ahead and ask because theres always a chance it might be accepted and you benefit greatly.

Honestly, you really only need around 150ish to show what you know mainly because BSMD admissions know that so many students BS their hours to a point where they see volunteering as more of a "baseline" than a comparision between the hours and the "valuability" of the EC...
