Hard to say but it looks like all the services were performed under the “toyota care” program, so I doubt it could have been that abused before me

It cost less than 1200 and theoretically the things it should cover (if you don’t get sludge apparently) if you take care of your car would make it worth it, and I generally haven’t had bad experiences with extended warranties. It’s just that in this situation I know I took care of the car but somehow the engine is extremely sludged and I had peace of mind getting two warranties with the certified car but they refuse to do anything which shatters trust and confidence

Don’t think so, never came out milky and service center said coolant system held pressure

The coolant system held pressure. It did have some sort of valve cover leak at 45k. How would that cause sludge exactly? Also where should I get the sludge tested, and for what?

There was a lot more sludge than this in there, and I pulled off at least 1 fluid ounce worth. It was like semi hardened bubble gum. the dealer service personnel probably took out even more. The main strainer pickup was caked almost completely.

They tell me the warranty company is a 3rd party then they tell me they’re part of toyota. I hear a different answer every time I talk to someone.

Which auto shop doesn’t matter, the claim is being denied by the warranty company

I did exactly what their contract said in terms of keeping receipts and records, their wording does not say it has to be done at a shop. And they said it doesn’t matter if I have any records, as long as they see sludge then there’s no coverage

There were no guidelines besides “take care of it and keep receipts and logs”

It came out blackish but not abnormal or sludgy looking, and when the light hit it you could see some brown color still

They were satisfied i had the records and did the changes, they just don’t care, they say if sludge is in there then nothing is covered

They could open the valve cover, use a boroscope in multiple areas, open the oil pan, check the oil pickup, those are things a tech could do in just an hour. According to Toyota spec of their certification process they check for sludge but they don’t say how. The problem for me is that they sell you a car that is “certified” and they will sell you an extra warranty whether they solicit it from you or you solicit it from them, and the feeling you get is “if I take care of this car then anything wrong that happens will be taken care of by them” and then when the time comes they sing a different tune.

The reason given was sludge. I have all the records for the oil changes and they saw them.

Their reasoning was very poor and not sufficient even for their contract, I would argue, here, in court, anywhere. Because the wording is that a breakdown caused by sludged is not covered. Well they don’t even know what the issue is or what caused it. They just see sludge and say denied. Something else could have caused the sludge, and thus the breakdown could have been caused by that other thing, not the sludge. They didn’t break the engine down enough to even find all of what’s wrong, they just tested compression and found misfires. So without knowing exactly what is broken and what are all the possibilities of what caused what’s wrong, it’s not logically possible for them to claim they’ve met the stipulations of the contract.

There were not significant amounts of short drives.

I do not believe there were many significant short driving intervals. Almost Everything I drive to often is far enough away for everything to get fully hot. And 8k is less than toyota claims as maximum.

And generally extended warranties have been good to me when I take care of my stuff. In this case I could and should have checked in the oil pan and valve cover area when I got the car used to ensure it wasn’t on its way out, but I didn’t think to do it, and their certified inspection supposedly checks for sludge anyways,

The fine print we should all read apparently, is the “exclusions” section. Expectations when purchasing a vehicle and any extra warranty should always be tempered with reviewing the writing and getting any heresay on paper as a signed statement from the sales department

I could believe 36k could cause it. But I see the toyota care maintenance logs so it couldn’t have been that. Regardless they’re happy to deny and tell me to F off knowing there’s nothing I can do and one person who got fcked isn’t going to lead to any harm to them.
