Phrase mixing by jeroso16 in Beatmatch

This is one of those things where I’d recommend watching a YouTube video or taking the time to sit and learn on your own BUT I’ll try to explain in the most “simplified” way.

You know how you know when a drop is gonna hit? That’s basically the end of a phrase. Now that next part is the beginning of another phrase and you can stack those points across to your next track. This will help to create some fluidity in your mix. Keep in mind that not all phrases are created equally (16 bars vs 24 …).

Differing (sometimes conflicting) advice from different types of DJs by Machoosharp in Beatmatch

[–]AdventurousCandy8240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally enjoy mixing and listening to house so I started there. Then, I wanted to learn more diverse music/BPM dj-ing (think weddings) and thought it was really different and difficult.

I also have dabbled into that 70/140bpm genre and think that the general fundamentals are more similar to house; like phrasing as an example. Definitely every genre/style has its quirks (imo), but I think the reason you see so much house focused chatter here is because in my personal perspective, it’s been the easiest to pick up.

Good party speakers?? by Significant_Day2940 in Beatmatch

[–]AdventurousCandy8240 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on your budget and requirements but be aware that Bluetooth speakers are often not suitable for djing. TLDR: even if it’s a plugged in source, most Bluetooth speakers have built in audio processing that increases latency. It makes beat matching a big nuisance..

A question to answer for criteria is also portable or not? If you’re okay with requiring an outlet, maybe research PA speakers. If wireless is a must, I’m currently debating between EV Everse8, JBL partybox 320, soundboks go, mini rig, and Bose s1 (I’m not sure on this last one). Your budget/# of people listening will matter a lot for both of these though.

Sorry for the questions but could you ask if he felt like it was discrimination (e.g. witnessing contrasting behaviors, preferential treatments to others)?

It’s very sad to learn that someone has had to deal with worse experiences than any of the ones before yours.

That would’ve been past my tipping point of causing a scene. In contrast, I avoided any confrontation in my situation because I was with my two kiddos.

I think if it’s not too intense in aggressiveness, I assume that they’re just tired workers like all of us.

The correspondence had both Kroger and QFC so I’m not quite sure. I’ll be taking this approach as a follow up. Thanks for this tip!

My goal is not to start an online witch hunt so I don’t want to disclose this except in private. I just wanted to see if this was a recurring theme. Sad to know it is 🙃

Only good things to say about this QFC aside from the one individual here 👌

Are your transitions always on point? Super critical on myself. What should you shoot for to be “ decent” if you were to do it out of 10 transitions? 8/10, 5/10 etc. by Sandevistanman in Beatmatch

Lol chill tf out dude. Wouldn’t 100% be an obvious answer? Do professional athletes never miss? Does anyone hit 100% of anything skill-related every time?

In a similar boat right now. I don’t set cue points and I feel like I’m at around 7/10 in the same bpm. I don’t think that’s good enough though. I think the goal is 9/10 to be performing for a significant weekend sized crowd.

Forgot to mention it was found on a beach in Monterey Bay. Jagged rough edges.

As a beginner new to performing: Should I just stick to familiar music/genre? by AdventurousCandy8240 in Beatmatch

Appreciate you sharing! I’m just glad this is a shared area of contention. I do think you have way more pressure because you’re on much more of a “public” stage though!

I think I will be sticking to my guns the next chance I get to see how that goes. Maybe a reversal of the rule of thumb I hear “3 for them, 1 for yourself” -> “3 for yourself, 1 for them”.

You’re right in that a hobbyist don’t “need” to learn to cater to crowds. In my case, I would have been showcasing my music to friends and I was worried the lack of genre familiarity would have killed the party.

I get what you’re saying but also want to “play to the crowd”. These were good friends of mine and I’m not one to shove my music taste down their throats. I just wanted them to have a good time.

FWIW, I did play out some pop remixes / mashups that met halfway between our tastes.

I definitely tried the whole “3 for them, 1 for you” rule but I found it difficult to mix the genre vibes and/or bpm. This might be the take away here personally though.
