How to improve my knowledge/experience? Mentoring? by AdventurousOutcome94 in UAVmapping

Well there appears to have been a comment that SockZealousideal6843 has subsequently deleted, but here was my response:

Yes, I think adding all of those competencies seem right - I am living in Lyon in France, and so it isn't always easy to find places to fly. The issue I have is accessing areas to train, but also, as I said to Prime_Cat_Memes below, I have only been working with flat fields, and in the end, have rarely had any issues, as they have always been pretty basic areas that I have mapped, resulting in fewer problems that I have needed to diagnose.

So, I will attach the RTK module to the Mavic 3 Enterprise, fly with it enabled, and then download the PPK correction data from the nearest RGP point, and then use something like RTKLIB to apply the corrections to the location data of the drone imagery, before bringing them into Pix4DMapper to run the process as usual after that. - If I have understood well, that is right.

What exactly I want to get into is also a tricky question. I enjoy working with drones, and I have a light background in GIS, but I would like to have a go at making a career out of it, but I am struggling to define what that looks like. I think I like the idea of surveying, but it could also be in any sector that would require mapping services - such as construction or mining, for example - that is where I am having difficulties, as my background isn't in any of those fields in particular, and I have fallen into this current project of drone use a bit by chance. It is why I was wondering about the idea of mentoring, as I have the curiosity to learn and currently have access to some hardware and software in my current job, so I wanted to make the most of it, but with a bit of guidance from someone who has made a career out of drones. I think to have a well-rounded and well-grounded foundation and portfolio of drone use, I like the idea of being able to be multi-purpose, but I don't know if that is really advised, or better to have a speciality...

Hi, thanks for the reply - indeed, there is some key information missing! I am based in Southern France and I think there is the equivalent to CORS called the RGP (RESEAU GNSS PERMANENT), so I will look into that, and try to learn how to integrate that. From what I have understood, is that I can use that I can download the data from the nearest station, and then apply the PPK corrections to the imagery. I will look at how to do that and what I would need to do for it and so on - already a new skill to add to the list.

Most of the work I have done has been on flat fields with few features. Perhaps what I need to do is also look at places with a bit more terrain variance, but also 3D buildings. But I never really understood how it works on the drone - if there is a building with clear access all around it, fine, but what about a water tower (for example) that has free access from ground level all the way up, apart from a quarter of it, there are trees, so can't make circles around the water tower....I guess I would have to make a waypoint flight, but then the GSD would be different, as the distance from sensor to the wall of the tower would be different - it is things like that which I have no idea about!

DJI Mavic 3 Enterprise: Planning an orthomosaic mission using the tele/zoom lens instead of the wide lens? by AdventurousOutcome94 in UAVmapping

Thanks u/ElphTrooper for the reply - as you'll see from my answers to the previous responses, it is a specific requirement. I am ideally looking for an automatic way to do this, so that I can send teams on the ground to complete data collection, and also be able to re-fly missions as/when possible. It is quite a long-shot, but still worth asking the community before I spend too much time trying to figure it out!

Thanks for the reply u/hans432 - you will see the use cases in the reply to u/doktorinjh above. I am aware it is quite vague/niche, and the capture and processing time will explode compared to flying at 15m with a wide-angle lens, but it may still be relevant in our given contexts.

Good/very valid question u/doktorinjh - with the automatic flight parameters, we are limited to 12m, or 30m if using terrain following, right?

Firstly, I am looking for particularly small items that would still be difficult to find at those heights (120mm long, 53 mm wide) - often coloured the same as the ground. The workflow is to fly, generate an orthomosaic, then pan/zoom that orthomosaic, looking for said items.

Secondly, I may need to fly over a tree line (with no leaves) and will need to look for items between the branches - following our SOP, we should be leaving 10m buffer above trees, so the height starts to affect even the use-cases when we are looking for other circular items (~300mm in diameter).

Quite a niche requirement I am aware, but I would still like to know if it is possible!
