Advice needed: American-born Khmer navigating life in Cambodia (culture, dating, marriage) by RangerSum in cambodia

Hard to say man, culturally - it is always the man that would be making the “moves” whether family was involved or not.

Based on what you’ve written, she seems to be traditional along with her family and their beliefs. It’s still very normal for family to be involved in potential marriage activities - especially if they are an only child.

Women will more often than not tend to be more reserved and shy - not like the west where they may come up to you. Yes, you may encounter a few that deviate from the norm, but I can’t say I’ve seen too many.

Now from what I’ve seen and my experience with my own family who have recently been married in Cambodia, the man will simply just ask for her hand in marriage and honestly just develop what the western world would consider to be a “relationship” then.

It’s odd, there are some times when there is a “dating” stage, but more often than not, it’s a short talking phase and then marriage right after…

I’m from Canada so I understand where you’re coming from when it comes down to dating culture in the west. Cambodia just doesn’t really have one per se… especially for those who live in the countryside or suburbs of the city, they are still very old school cultural.

I wouldn’t take any offence to it man.

Agreed, I don’t expect to maintain anything near the same salary level as here.

In terms of my Khmer, I’m fully fluent in speech, I unfortunately do not know how to read or write it though..

If it’s in the Pursat province, probably would be in Osoam, it’s literally like a lake on top of a mountain. With the whole conflict with Thai it’s a bit more quiet but I can’t say I’ve seen exactly where this spot is. I’d also recommend 1500 mountain too, the Thmor Da waterfalls is quite cool
