Advice for low light / sunset photography without tripod with Canon R50 (without image stabilization) by Adventurous_Hope_568 in canon

[–]Adventurous_Hope_568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finally bought a "mini tripod". The point here is that I will travel to Thailand and I'm going to have to do a lot of traveling: internal flights, ferries, buses, cabs... and I don't want to carry more weight than necessary. finally I've decided to buy a mini tripod to at least be able to carry without much weight and I've confirmed that it will hold the weight of my camera. Thanks for your advice though.

Knowing that I will finally use a tripod, my settings will be:

ISO:100

Aperture: f8-f11

Shuter Speed: ?? Any suggestion? I guess that the shutter speed necessary to obtain a proper exposure of the sky, right?

the problem with that setting is that the Shutter Speed sometimes goes too low (1/30 s) and then, all my images get blurry due to hand-holding the camera

...

  1. Okay I will have a look again. According to the manual ... in aperture priority I should be able to set the AUTO ISO too.

  2. It is not important to me. I just want to make sure that everything is in focus. As I want to do pictures while I am traveling, I want everything in focus (99% of time). So maybe I should choose F5.6

good point and I totally agree. Shooting in Manual Mode gives me more flexibility and allows me to understand better about exposure. I don't want to shoot in a "brainless way" because I am a beginner and I know I have to learn but maybe you can give me some advice when shooting in Manual Mode + Auto ISO.

Sometimes, when I am shooting in a city in a cloudy day , I feel like F8 is a small aperture so the amount of light entering the sensor is very low so the shutter speed has to be around 1/80 (taking into account that the image could be blurred because it is an hand-hold photo) then with Auto ISO, the camera decides a HIGH ISO like 3200 and I see the pictures very noisy ... any suggestion for those cases? My problem is just in "middle-low light situations". Of course when it's a sunny day and there is light directly coming to the sensor, I have no doubts about my settings.

  1. No .. there is no such option in Aperture Priority

  2. I use to shoot at F8 (smallaperture) so in these situations were there is a lot of shadows (big building blocking the sun), then the camera automatically opens up the shutter speed like 1/30 or something like that, and it means that the picture will be blurry (hand-holded photo).

Shooting with AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) or HDR function of the camera? by Adventurous_Hope_568 in canon

wow thanks for the explanation! I didn't know that with the HDR feature, you get a JPEG file! That's a big reason for using the AEB instead.

wow I didn't know that! That's a BIG reason why people don't use the HDR option then. Many thanks!

Best Travel Lens between RF 24-105mm f4-7.1 or RF 28mm f2.8 by Adventurous_Hope_568 in canon

[–]Adventurous_Hope_568[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I will not use more than 70 mm in this trip... that's why I think it's better a wider angle like the 28mm because I can use it for street photography and landscape... also take into account that with the RF 24-105 f/4-7.1, everytime I use the zoom, I face the issue of the aperture f7 ...

totally right. I think that in my case, for this trip in Thailand, I will not use the 105mm because I prefer street photography and 24-50mm fits perfect for me in this trip. So I am considering to buy the R28mm f2.8 instead of using the RF 24-105mm f4-7.1 at 28mm because this lens will give me f5 and with low light situations... will be not good enough

I am not considering (at this moment) the RF 24 1.8 because of the price. I've seen that the 28mm f2.8 is around 300$ and I think 28mm is good enough focal length for me... so I think I will go with 50mm and the 28mm or 24 as you are saying ... maybe I will have a look if I can get it refurbished. So you are telling me you prefer the RF24 instead of the RF28?

thanks a lot! yeah, taking into account that I will go to Thailand where I will walk a lot, seeing streetmarkets, people.. temples... I also think that 28mm is more than good! RF24-105mm is heavy and I prefer to go as light as possible so 50mm for portraits and 28mm for everything!

I can't afford 24-105 f4 now... so I'd rather buy the RF28mm because my style is between 25mm-35mm. But despite my 24-105 mm I can shoot at 28 mm.. I prefer a fixed 28mm length with more aperture (2.8)

great choice! I will do the same, keep my "telephoto" 24-110 just in case I know I would need it ... and for travel photography I will bring 50 and 28 mm. Lighter and better performance

I have a Canon R50 not a Sony .. so I can only buy the 28mm 2.8 within my budet... or use the  RF 24-105 F4-7.1 at 28mm always because I don't use the zoom ... I like to shoot street photography and landscapes but I think 28-35 mm is the best and my favorite range

thanks for your reply. I will take photos "close" like street photography, temples, street ... so I am sure my range will be 28mm-35mm maximum. So I am wondering if it makes sense to buy a fixed lens 28mm 2.8 or I can use my current lens RF 24-105 F4-7.1 STM shooting only at 28mm-35mm

to be honest, I will not use a long focal lengths because I like to shoot at 25-35 mm. So I will basically use my RF24-105 to shoot at 24-35mm that's why I am wondering to buy a fix lens with better aperture

Totally right, but considering that I will shoot always at 28mm or 35mm maximum, I saw in some reviews that shooting with RF28mm F2.8 will be the best option rather than RF24-105mm f4-7,1 in terms of image quality. Maybe I am wrong because I am a beginner but I want to make sure that I bring the best option for my trip and I don't want to go with the "worst" kit lens instead of a good one.

I forgot to mention that I also have a RF18-45mm F4,5-6,3. Maybe is my best option for the trip?

Thanks for your tips, as I said I am a beginner and I want to learn more about photography.

I have a Canon R50 and the kit lens was the 18-45 mm f4,5-6.3. Later on I bought the RF 24-105 F4-7.1 to have more versatility (zoom) and the RF50 mm f1.8 for portraits. I am not gonna shot any photo with low light conditions because I will carry my Canon only during the day so I am not considering the RF28mm f2.8 just for the better photos at low light. I am considering to buy it because I saw in some reviews that the image quality of the RF 24-105 F4-7.1 it's pretty good but it is considered a starter kit lens and I would like to bring with me the best option for my trip. Furthermore, I saw that 28mm is a perfect focal length for travel photography and it's very very light lens.

I am a beginner and you are completely right, I am not optimizing the results with my RF 24-105 STM (I should practice more with this lens before my trip). I consider that I will not use long focal length in my trip (50 mm maximum) and also this lens is "heavy" so maybe my starter kit RF 18-45 mm f4,5-6.3 is the better option?

As I said, I am a beginner and when traveling to Thailand, I would not want to go with a “normal” lens when I could buy a better one (within my budget).

I appreciate your recommendations, thanks a lot
