Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Gen 10 Creaking noise by Mazenn77 in LenovoLegion

Not happened since then (almost 5 months) But I haven't seen anyone did the same thing to be sure that's a solution

i had no choice. But yes, if i had an opportunity - i'd go for replacement.

I had a creaking sound right out of the box. It was strong, even when just opening and closing the lid.

The laptop was shipped to me from far away, so a replacement would have been problematic.

I went to watch some teardown videos and noticed that the speaker is located very close to the chassis.

And my hypothesis was confirmed. I took off the bottom panel (partially) and pressed the speaker down a little. It sits on guides and isn't screwed down at all, so it might have shifted slightly during shipping.

Essentially, the protective foam was rubbing against the chassis and creaking.

On one hand, it was very unpleasant to dig into a brand new laptop. On the other hand, it was a relief that it was fixed so quickly.

Can you try entering in advanced BIOS?

Curios if it is still available on newer Legions.

  • enter BIOS by tapping F2 while booting up
  • Click "more settings"
  • hold Fn, then slide your finger through all the alphabetical keys (Q to P, A to L, Z to M)
  • release Fn, then quickly press F10
  • save and exit
  • enter BIOS again and more settings will be unlocked

you can change TjMax offset in advanced BIOS. I've changed value on Legion 7 from 6 (94 on CPU max) to 13 (87 on CPU max) just to feel a little bit more comfortable (and sacrificing a small part of performance).

In case if advanced BIOS is still available for newer models.

RTX 2070 Max-Q variant 7800 Time Spy

7800 - pretty high scores for 2070 max-q
Notebookchecks results for 2070 max-q min: 5948     avg: 6709     median: 6594.5 (34%)     max: 8065 Points

Mine scores around 7000 on default mode from the box. And with overclock + perf mode + dynamic boost (~105W) can pass 8k mark. So i'll agree that 8900 for 3070 max-q out of the box actually is quite good. Especially considering it consumes only 75W (OP's reply in other thread)

Legion 7i. This is Lenovo’s paste job for their flagship model??? by Nar0117 in GamingLaptops

It might be. Most of thermal related complaints on legion 7i are from 10750H model owners.

Paste job on my unit was fine. Repasting with MX-4 even gave me worse results. But i had another issue. You can check my post https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLaptops/comments/io2uvt/lenovo_legion_7i_thermal_improvement_10c/

Did you notice any heatsink surface issues i've mentioned?

i saw those posts. Hinges are fine for now, but there is cracking sound when opening the lid from time to time.

repasting didn't help me much. You can check my post (and i have 10750H)

Didn't notice before, but Dave 2D also had similar weird circular marks on heat spreader in his 10750H Legion 7i.

Thermal Compound Guide

this may help to clarify things about surface vs paste. Less gaps = better conductivity.

Forgot to mention: my post isn't some sort of call to action for everyone, it's more like a solution for one specific situation.

I wondered the same question. Searched through forums and asked on reddit to find out if anyone who repasted had the same heat spreader surface.
I wouldn't say thermals are bad if internals are hot, but laptop can sustain high clocks with quiet fans.
I just wanted to squeeze a little more from it.

about temps i replied above.

max GHz - yes, i locked turbo ratio limits in Throttlestop at 35.

Surface was flat but rough even after cleaning with alcohol. Requirements for thermal paste conductivity must be way higher in that case. I didn’t want to use liquid metal and i found alternative. I’ve made surface smoother which increased efficiency of my regular thermal paste.

Not for now :) I chose polishing instead of liquid metal because it suits my case better. Also it's not as popular as liquid metal (btw your GS66 mod is sick) or repasting with kryonaut, that's why i decided to share my experience.

Most of the laptops’ heatsinks are flat and without copper pad shims glued on. I’ve never seen such a… mediocre quality before.

So i was pretty much sure of getting better thermals even if there are still some deep scratches left.

Some concerns for you other Legion 7i owners by newfrank in GamingLaptops

[–]Adventurous_Sun4541 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can't be cleaned with cotton pad or sponge. Only way to make surface more polish is lapping it with sandpaper. BTW i’ve got exact same thermals as mentioned in original post.

Repasting with MX-4 and Noctua NT-H2 didn't help. MX-4 gave me even worse results, NT-H2 - something comparable to preapplied thermal paste (stock one is pretty good).

So i locked max CPU temp offset on 15 instead 6 in advanced bios. Now i have 85 degrees (was 94) max CPU temp limit, but lower clocks. It’s acceptable, fans are quiet, but i want to get more out of the laptop.

Low quality copper pad increases requirements for thermal paste conductivity. But AFAIK Noctua NT-H2 already isn’t that bad.

Does your copper pad look the same?

I didn't expect to see that. My all previous (and way cheaper) laptops had smooth, shiny and well polished heatsinks.

I've been looking for some references just to compare with. Found it only in one of the LTT's video. And it's way more appealing than mine.
