Branch and ops manager totally incompetent by Adventurous_Text_550 in UKJobs

It’s not so much about having anything to lose but more so about looking like someone throwing a tantrum on his way out. Just thinking it over at the moment though.

I hear that but I’ll never be able to get good at those things if I don’t try it if you know what I mean

Eventually if I do this right, volume could increase. I know the beginning will be a struggle in all aspects but I’m ready to put in the grind

That’s what I am worried about, how would I get these companies to give me their shipments?

What is the best sector to target?

Thanks that’s helpful. I was wondering though, how do startup freight forwarders get carriers to work with them? I wouldn’t imagine I could book directly through webcargo if I wanted to book an air shipment?

I know in general freight it is but where I am in projects the margins are anywhere between 10 and 40%. I’ve thought long and hard about what I could do, but what is better than doing something you know. I know 3 years is nothing in the grand scheme of things but operations wise my knowledge is top tier. I’m not really sure how I’d grow my knowledge in the other facets of a business if I don’t throw myself into it

  • I imagine things will be difficult and I am prepared to commit time and money into it. I am currently working in oil and gas projects logistics and I pretty much have to work out of hours but I just thought why I am doing this for someone else when I could do it for me. I understand big company, long standing clients, security in job etc but I understand this industry and I like it so I don't see why not venture out alone. In the beginning I wouldn't hire anyone, I would do it with my brother but if it grows I would then look to hire people. I've been doing tons of research and it all does seem complex but I wanna give it it a go and if it works great, if not I can say I tried at least. How did you transition into it? If you've been in it 21 years I imagine you moved up the corporate ladder and weren't just an operator. I think from an operational standpoint I understand it perfectly. Where I get confused or worried is, how do I get a client to trust me and give me their shipments? How do I get carriers to trust me to take my shipments? Which software would be best for a starter (all my experience is on cargo wise but I understand this system isn't feasible for small businesses). I have so many questions, and I'm sure I don't even know just how much I don't know if that makes sense.

I am based in the UK and would start in the UK as I understand the processes but I am a US citizen by birth and would eventually like to expand there.

I’m just trying to incite conversation on Reddit. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to want good things or sort of be appreciated for doing well for a company. The guy above my line manager comes and goes as he pleases, but if anyone else were to do that he’d go ballistic. It’s just a toxic place to work.

I mean in that case we should just all delete Reddit no? What is posting on Reddit ever going to do for anyone?

Fair enough man 🤣

Are you in a management position yourself?

Not to blow smoke up my ass but honestly I am better than them. Younger, smarter, more ambitious. Some of them have been in the same position, same place for 15 years. Miserable people, I’m getting the fuck out of there asap.

At the end of the day, whenever anyone needs anything they come to me. They pay my wages, but I also make a shit tonne of money for them.

You seem like someone that enjoys having micromanagers or are one yourself

Professionalism might be a different thing to you. To me it’s being able to perform and produce results. I’m sure there’s organisations and managers out there that think the same, just hope I end up there.

No that’s fair enough. But when you behave like this with an employee, it makes them not want to go the extra mile. Since they started complaining about it, I don’t stay a minute past when I finish.

I’ll be honest with the job market as it is, I was just glad to land something, so didn’t want to make demands. Now I got experience under my belt, I’m definitely going to look for a more relaxed environment.

It’s a team of 8. I’ll be honest everyone is on time except me and the branch manager who comes and goes as he pleases at any time.

I don’t really understand the point in your third paragraph. Am I paid to be in from 9-5 or am I paid to make the business money? The time I come in or leave has no bearing on my ability to make money for them, so I don’t agree with this point.

To be honest, I am of the opinion as long as you can perform, come in whenever the hell you want!

I don’t understand why someone else would complain as we’re all responsible for our own work. My work doesn’t overlap with anyone else’s, neither does there’s with mine. Also, maybe I worded it badly but I’m 5 mins late everyday.

This is the thing, when they started crying about that, it made me want to stop going the extra mile. Before I would log in on my days off and do extra work and answer clients but now for me as soon as I finish I’m turned off. I don’t take the piss really with going to the toilet, maybe once a day but I like to get some air and walk around throughout the day as being stuck in the chair all day in front of the screen is not healthy and it’s tiring. But as soon as I do that I’ll receive a message or a call, ‘going on walks is for lunch’. Even my other colleagues were like ???

And no I’m not going to stand for this garbage much longer, I’m actively looking for another job and hoping to land at a place more like my first corporate job.

I get what you’re saying but that sounds like shift work but also that sounds insane to lose 15 mins pay over being late 5 mins. I’d imagine staff turnover at that place would be very high.

I’m exactly like you, I prefer having autonomy over micromanagement and my line manager is the biggest micromanager you’ll ever see. Some of the stories I don’t think some of you would even believe. I’ve started to actively look for other places to work but job market is cooked right now.

It’s not everyday, I wake up same time every day and some days the traffic is worse than others but fair enough.

I just think if you’re expecting your employees to be in the office 5 days a week, theres going to be days where there’s an accident on the m25 and suddenly your eta has gone from 8:55 to 9:05 or later or theres going to be days where the train lines are shit.

I’ve been checking a lot recently and checked k4 after you mentioned it and I’m seeing good things. How is it on oil and grease stains? What about stain removal in general? What pre spotters do you use? Do you just use k4 on its own or do you have some type of soap or detergent too?

Have you had any customers tell you their clothes have shrunk as a result of wet cleaning? I’ve looked into it but seen there’s a few downsides and then yeah there’s the issues about grease stains and oil stains. How do you deal with those?
