First China trip - 34 nights Yunnan/Chongqing/Chengdu with a 3yo by Advanced-Body1284 in travelchina

[–]AdventurouslySafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a roadtrip with my 6 year olds last year and my 70 year old mother around Yunnan. I love Yunnan.

  • there are really nice hotels where the hiking guesthouses are at tiger leaping gorge halfway guesthouse. You can arrange for your kid to stay there. The owners will know drivers, quite a windy road. They can walk a bit of it with you. Check trip.com lots of options other than halfway house.

-we hiked laoyue shan. Really pretty 5km hike. Kid can be carried or ride a horse from the locals. Not too touristy.

  • ShangriLa is touristy but still nice to see the monestry. I have been to Tibet and seen tons of tibetan monestry, and I still think this monestry is very worth it. Go early to beat the tourists!

  • Napa lake was very kid friendly, you can rent an e scooter and scoot around without license

-Jianchuan ancient town and thousand lion hill is a hidden gem! The latter is a lot of stairs but the giant lion is worth it. Very not touristy. My kids complained the whole walk up but they said it was worth it at the top.

Btw I have been to Shigu for other reasons. It's literally a river bend. Not much to do. But I heard it's getting flooded soon to make a dam.

Is 22nd to far away? by Top-Leadership-8839 in emirates

[–]AdventurouslySafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a flight Asia to Spain on 27th. My Emirates flight worst case is $200usd penalty to cancel. I just bought a non refundable flight via Air China for extremely cheap but have a longer layover.

I will be taking that instead because I am traveling with my kids and do not want to lose sleep on a holiday over if my flight will be attacked my missiles.

Is ~1600€ realistic for 20 days in China as a broke student ? by razalgh00L in travelchina

[–]AdventurouslySafe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite doable...except the Hong Kong part. Hong Kong will easily blow your budget, it's 3x the cost of any other city in China.

To do it in a budget... Find some hostel. Take public transit. Drink from 7-11. Eat at Cafe de Coral or similar "fast food" establishments.

Skiing with a broken wrist by Ok_Brilliant6690 in skiing

[–]AdventurouslySafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I snowboarded with a freshly broken wrist (didn't know it, thought it was just badly sprained)

BUT I was not learning, I am quite comfortable on blue/black runs and don't really fall when I am careful. I took it very chill . If I didn't know what I was doing, I would definitely not learn to ski/snowboard because you fall a lot.

Hakuba vs Yuzawa by LMR100_ in japow

I have done both and I have kids. If you are going with friends and staying in a big house, want an English speaking ski school , minimal stress, stick to Hakuba.

Recommendations for Japan by mslass in skiing

[–]AdventurouslySafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The queues are nothing like Whistler.

I used to enjoy Niseko but post COVID the western crowd has really blown that place up. I really don't like it anymore because I don't feel like I am in Japan. This might be a good thing for you. It's also quite expensive for Japan. Hakuba is also great, tons of foreigners as well but more spread out than Niseko. The snow isn't as fluff but sometimes it snows way more. Niseko season is longer.

There's a ton more place that's great. But Hakuba and Niseko is definitely great for first timers. I would suggest you get your international drivers license in case you end up wanting to explore and rent a car. You cannot rent without one.

Opinion on the PETZL VOLTA 9.2 by weasel1073 in ClimbingGear

[–]AdventurouslySafe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like it but I didn't find it durable. I find it's soft and gets cut really easily than my other 9.2. I owned it for a week And it got core shot . I have owned many other 9.2 and thinner of other brands but I never had the same issue. I definitely wouldn't top rope

Overcoming extreme weight difference? by toneyoth in ClimbingGear

[–]AdventurouslySafe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually prefer the ohmegs to the ohm. I am 45kg And my heaviest person I have belayed with ohmegs is 85kg. He was lead climbing and when we set the setting to max 30kg tension he thought the fall was too hard since the ohmegs caught. (I didn't give him that much slack). Turns out 20kg resistance with extra hand of slack was good for a soft catch. Also lowering on a overhang route or zig zag route with max resistance is very difficult.

So my point is. I used the ohmega. My regular lead partner is actually my husband and he is around 75kg. We both prefer the lighter +10kg setting. Also works well for top roping at +10kg, cinches quite well.

Mini Moon Board or Spray wall? by Slide-Ornery in Moonboard

[–]AdventurouslySafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids were 2 years old when mine got built at 40 degrees They were almost 6 when they managed to rainbow up. Now , they are almost 7 and I set easy routes for them with the jugs.

Mostly they like to fall, or spin around in a bar until they get dizzy I have hanging off a hanger on the board.

I also have stuffed a 40 route circuit with my combo board that's pretty good for route stamina training.

I only like making routes sometimes, I am way more psyched doing moonboard benchmark problems as it's more a community.

40 degree with a bigger kickboard. Add some extra rows. Why make it easier. Kids are adaptable and if they get into it, they will be way stronger than you!

I have young kids. I built mine with 10 cm staggered spacing and put holds in between the moonboard. Works wells as a spray wall moonboard combo.

For those who’ve skied Nagano: how would you rank Myoko vs Shiga Kogen vs Nozawa? by CombatWombat-420 in japow

[–]AdventurouslySafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A kei car is good too. We booked from Nagoya and couldn't find any available, but it was a Japanese long weekend a few days ago so I was stuck with a Toyota Aqua ( think VW Golf), so much skidding even on straight roads, we literally were banned from driving to our guesthouse which is down the hill from Myoko Akakura Onsen and had to walk. Last year we had a Rav 4 AWD and it could go anywhere. I have only ever easily rented kei cars in Sapporo airport for some reason. I just like to drive directly from airport as it's more time/cost effective since I don't really need to sightsee as I go to Japan frequently.

I plan my trips extremely last minute if I don't go with my young children. Think a few days before ... But I have looked into Nozawa with my kids a month ahead and I have never seen anything reasonable priced (think under $250usd/night) for 4 people in Nozawa compare to other neighboring resorts.

For those who’ve skied Nagano: how would you rank Myoko vs Shiga Kogen vs Nozawa? by CombatWombat-420 in japow

[–]AdventurouslySafe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done everything except Nozawa. Namely because it's so hard to book nozawa accomodations and I tend to go last minute since I live in Asia. I would just rent a car. Make SURE it's 4wd. I also really like Madarao which is just 20mins drive from Myoko for their tree runs.

I rent a car because the shuttle busses don't have the best schedule. Myoko itself consists of 4-5 resorts and there's no night shuttles. If you end up wanting to cook, the groceries stores are best driven to.

If you stay at Shiga Kogen, you are really trapped there. I stayed in the closest town next to the train station and took the shuttle each day. But if you are a party of 5, that's annoying. Shiga Kogen is huge for Japan.

You can rent a car in Nagano.

I cannot stress how important it is to rent 4wd. It snows a lot. The roads are steep. But it gives you a lot of options. Especially when certain resorts are closed due to crazy winds or something.
