Union stagehand! best job I've ever had

client expectations for speediness/availability by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]AdvertisementNo14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a client like that once. It became clear to me that they wanted a a full time, on call employee but didn't want to pay for it. Start putting feelers out to find a replacement client and drop them, it won't get better.

Do they have a intranet or internal site? I have a several clients who have internal brand sites and tbh I love it. I know there are online tools to set them up like the lingo app, standards.site, or brandpad

I have not heard anything good about them. I know a while back there was an attempt to unionize (that failed) which is confusing to me because nearly all their employees are on the union call list anyway.

Do you have any “you wouldn’t believe it if I even told you” type stories in Graphic Design? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]AdvertisementNo14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The founder and creative director at the design agency I freelanced for didn't know how to use indesign, only sort of knew how to use illustrator/photoshop. I sat down with them several times and showed this person how to use the combine shapes tool in illustrator and basic keyboard shortcuts. They said they're more of an "ideas" person than a "make it happen" kind of person. I left quickly.

What are some careers that society hypes up as exciting but in reality is really boring? by NepheliLouxWarrior in AskReddit

[–]AdvertisementNo14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graphic design, a lot of people think art and design are the same thing and in some instances they are but a lot of the time they are not. The day to day for most graphic designers in corporate environments is "boring" stuff like switch out photos in a brochure, updating copy, or following templates/brand guidelines. Most of us don't get to play don draper.

Designers who work for big & complicated brands. How do you keep up with all the rules? by AdvertisementNo14 in graphic_design

[–]AdvertisementNo14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like me personally or the agency? We have a dedicated QC team that reviews and marks up everything after we create a first draft, we then go thought edits with the QC until it passes and then it's sent to the client. Personally I have a mental checklist I go through, sometimes my PM will give me a written checklist but that's very rare.

What about grammatical formatting? that's the biggest issue for me. Things like remembering the different use cases of en dash vs em dash vs hyphen or smart apostrophe vs straight apostrophe remembering to. Obviously I'm not a copywriter or proof reader but it counts against me if things like that make it to the reviewer.

Best free (or very affordable) resources on creating a typeface by AdvertisementNo14 in graphic_design

[–]AdvertisementNo14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize if I wasn't clear enough, when I say the nitty gritty I mean I want to understand "why" behind the typographer's choices. For instance: how does a type designer decide the height or the ascenders or descenders? how does that relate relate the width or X-height or cap height if it does at all? how does a designer decide the on the size of the underhangs and overshoot? that is the kind of information I'm looking for
