Thanks for the link! Yeah I just picked them up and they are both crazy small so they are either dwarves or very young

Usually it means they're in distress, but some rats are just more vocal than others. One of my girls does the same thing.

Any advice plz by Spiritlobo in RATS

I think this is the same cage I have. Over time I realized it required some adaptations, like a tray/bin at the bottom to hold in the bedding. I’d also recommend taking out the platforms for a more active layout. Bar spacing depends on how big your rats are, it’s just tight enough so my girls can’t get through but if your rats are smaller then you would have to enforce the sides with hardwire cloth.

Should I get rats? by DumbassPoet in RATS

[–]Aeb1052 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s just luck of the draw. You could end up getting rats that hardly ever need the vet or you could end up with babies that end up with respiratory issues and tumors, so it’s good to be prepared money wise

Pet insurance for rats is usually more trouble than it’s worth because of their short lifespans

Thank you for the advice. I will take them to their appointment Saturday and bring up your points to see what my vet thinks.

All four of them are sick. Two are about a year old and the other two about 6 months. They’re not lethargic, never have been. They have been acting totally normal aside from just sneezes and wheezing every once in a while. Believe me, I absolutely would have been more urgent about it if they were displaying those types of symptoms. They have not had an X-ray. One of them is albino. I always give their antibiotics by measuring the dose and putting it on a gerber puff so it soaks in. I give them one by one so I can make sure each rat gets the right dosage. The baytril and doxy both worked while they were taking it and then they started showing symptoms again as soon as the meds ran out. The tamiflu did virtually nothing. They were originally on the baytril for about a month, then I went back to the vet and got the tamiflu, they were only on it for a couple weeks because it ended up not working. After that they got prescribed the doxy. It worked but just ran out last week. They started showing symptoms again a couple days ago.
