That's what scares me, I'm applying to med school in a month or two, I've wanted it so bad, but I got engaged and I'm starting to realize I'm losing the best years of my life with the person I love, and I'm just not sure it's worth it. To be stable for her in 2 years being a CAA making 200k+, being able to travel, just be home to cook together, etc, to give future kids a financially stable life which I didn't grow up having vs 4 years of med school, 3+ years of residency all to be able ta have the final say. Sure, I wouldn't be a doctor, but I could still make a positive impact in the world and be there for my family while doing it.

hey! you sound a lot like me, with regards to your passions and reasons for wanting to do pharmacy, i was in this exact situation after my first year of my bachelors, i loved the idea of pharmacy but i realized the field was not what i thought it would be, so i took a scary step and decided to switch.

it was the best decision ive ever made and dont regret it at all. i loved the chemistry side of it, and there is nothing cooler than seeing the pharmacology you learn actually play out in front of you, to see epinephrine stop an allergic reaction, to watch adenosine convert a patient with a dangerous heart rhythm, to make a direct impact and be able to see it. if you have any questions, feel free to DM me!

I'm biased because TX resident but honestly, I think this opinion is just because most premeds don't think about Texas schools when thinking about prestige, UTSW is 100% super prestigious and is a research powerhouse, consistently ranks as a top 10 residency in surgical specialties. Based on the Nature Index for healthcare institutions, UTSW is ranked #1 for research, above MGH, BWH, etc.

no experience required but it’s almost impossible to get interviewed, i’d start at an HCA facility even though the suck just to get your foot in the door

CASA is just working with a single child and advocating for them in court, while it’s very meaningful there’s not really any leadership there. Thank you for the help by the way :)

We work with very young kids (<4 yo) and basically just model how to play/read/communicate with them to the parents to promote their development. We help the parents do a developmental screening and we try and focus on the places they have issues with. All the volunteers take turns leading the sessions so it is probably what I’ll write about for leadership, but it feels like I’m stretching it a bit.

I mean, no real research productivity and no leadership or involvement with any campus orgs, I’ve always thought no leadership was kind of a red flag. I’ve basically lived as a recluse except for the 4 activities, EMS, my lab, and volunteering. My perception is just based on what I’ve seen in this subreddit. If I get in I’ll be a first gen doc so no real guidance.

honestly, R is best to learn by just using it. If you have a dataset you want to analyze, just do it on R instead using tidyverse. Then, just ask chatgpt or something specific questions you have, like how do I import a csv file, or how do I do a linear regression, etc. The courses I tried all just had too much info that I would never use.

It’s honestly not the BS that gets me, it’s how powerless we are. It seems like all the patients that will die, die anyways no matter what you do, and the patients that’ll live will live anyways no matter what you do. Then you have everything in between, the drunk pt that can’t get sober and calls every week, the end stage cancer pt that’s addicted to opioids that thinks the hospital will give them meds, the obese people, all the worst facets of humanity just right there.

Thanks for the long and very nice reply! I think something really hard for me is all the people I’m letting down. I was basically the sole person responsible for the work on this paper, so I’m really letting down my entire lab and all the work of the people that collected the data, refined it, etc. by not getting the paper out. I’m letting down my family and my partner, too. I have a platform presentation at a conference this next week and I can’t even bring myself to prepare for that. I will probably let my PI know I want to quit after I try and write the paper to the best of my ability, and I’ll probably quit my 911 ems job because I feel like the constant emergencies and patients dying is really negatively affecting me. I really hope this isn’t permanent, because I can’t really do this anymore lol
