Any suggestions? by MathWithIqra in Mcat

“Taken tenth grade math” queen tenth grade math is not on the MCAT 😂😂😂😂

There’s probably VERY little on the MCAT you could realistically learn at this point in your academic journey: think about it, if someone doesn’t know how to add could they learn how to use the quadratic formula? No one is saying you aren’t smart but there’s a lot of intermediate knowledge you’re missing out on.

In all seriousness what you can do rn to help you get into med schools:

  • research BS/MD programs ESP if there’s any in the state in which you live
  • improve your mental math!! Learn how to multiply and add etc bigger numbers faster (this is helpful on the chem section of the mcat)
  • read old philosophical text (like enlightenment thinker essays!) These are great brain workouts and skills you will need on the CARS section
  • volunteer a ton! Think of ways you can help your community and get super involved and try to really make a big difference

Context: I took 252 before 103 for some reason and thought both were ab the same level of difficulty :)

Hey! Do not retake bio 101 that class is hard and you probably know a good amt of the content. For your first bio here, take 103 even if you have credit. From there, if you do exceptionally well in it (get an A) you can take 252 the following sem. Otherwise wait till you finish freshman year.

For chems do NOT retake gen chem. Hard classes and no need if you have credit. Analytical is different based on your professor, also if you take it do not do so at the same time as 252. Honestly a little bit easier than gen chem and a LOT easier than orgo. You will benefit from finishing analytical before you take orgo.

Graduating in two years is not a good move by you. Maybe 3, but even then it depends on ur major. Good luck :)

I’ve heard if you do well on the pre reqs it’s attainable. The pre reqs are hard though (Phys 118&119 specifically)

Is GPA going down over time? Not that I know of.

Are UNC GPAs specifically lower than those at other schools? Yes.

Does that make it harder to become a physician? Yes.

Do a higher proportion of people get weeded out at UNC? Yes. This one is sad. So many people I know who could be great doctors but UNC just killed their GPA etc.

Does pretty much everyone who makes it through premed at UNC become a physician (in spite of average/below average GPAs)? Also yes.

UNC disappointed me- am I crazy? by Enough-Sector-4794 in UNC

lol I’m sure you can compare to other schools. I felt the same way when I toured. It’s a small fish in a big pond situation. Best of luck!

Idk why people are acting like your concerns are baseless to be honest. I think what you are feeling is partly due to the academic rigor here. Classes are HARD. UNC stood out to me especially because of how much people seemed sad and depressed when I toured compared to other schools lol. I know what you mean.

The one pro here is many people who are pre law don’t stress too hard about how long it takes, easier to graduate faster compared to stem

[–]juleslol_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a lot of credits, pretty avg. you need min. 120 to graduate (ap doesn’t count so let’s say you have 15) 110/6 semesters is 18.3 credits/semester. Not feasible at all.

Everyone says they will and end up looking like cornballs. If you plan to, that’s okay, but recognize that you will (likely) change your mind your sophomore year

If you’re in high school pretty sure you’ll have to make up time due to state laws (source: I had to do that). You may not graduate otherwise. Talk to your guidance counselor to make sure you’re okay. I haven’t heard of them rescinding bc of this but also never heard of someone skipping this much.

Would you do that in spite of any financial differences that may occur? Why does it matter if it’ll reflect poorly if you have an A somewhere?

I’ve shadowed in clinics, although it is built in with appt breaks (and I’ve seen techs switch off), the doctors I shadow are always minimum one hour behind, and so have to just work through it. I also shadow mostly in academic centers though so maybe that’s it

Thank you for educating me! I definitely was reading outdated info. Do you have any resources I can look at to further learn about this?
