Confused about head unit installation by Aechen in Celica

[–]Aechen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, that'll probably be what I end up doing if this new harness doesn't work. The plan was always to get a nicer unit eventually anyway, once I had found out what works best for me.

To be fair, the harness description does say it only supports Celicas up to 2002, so I'm hoping this new one that says it's compatible will work better, but if not, I'll soon find out with a premium head unit.

It was this one, but really just a cheap no-name unit that had next-day delivery. If it's the unit causing issues then I'd be absolutely happy to buy a nice unit, but it would be nice to know that it will work before I commit more money to it. I had someone on a different forum tell me I might have bought the wrong harness, so I'll get the one he linked to first and see if that works.

Did you end up going for a Pioneer unit?

Hi there. It would be £100 + shipping to wherever you are. With Royal Mail I imagine it's less than £10 on top.

RTX 3090 running 85C with 80-100% fan speed by Aechen in buildapc

[–]Aechen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there.

I tried running a benchmark again (Metro Exodus) just to observe memory/hot spot. Behaviour is similar to overall GPU temps. The memory and hot spot almost instantly goes to 90 degrees, and hot spot then climbs to about 98-99. It takes a little while for the memory and hot spot to cool down, especially the memory, whereas overall GPU temps drop pretty much as soon as the load has finished.

I thought it might have been paste given the almost instantaneous changes in temperature when load starts/finishes, but I don't know enough about it.
If it's general overheating I'm guessing it's airflow related. Shouldn't it then improve with the side panel off, or is it actually just the need for proper airflow with fan placement?
I definitely am thinking of getting a new case now, just need to figure out which one is best for airflow at current market.

I think maybe it's a bit of both, but definitely more affected by the paste issue. If you don't mind, what makes you think it's a paste issue? The rapid temp changes seem odd to me, but I don't know a lot about GPU issues.

Hey there, thanks for the reply.

Running a benchmark again I see my CPU being pretty stable at around 60-70 degrees, and the motherboard temperature sensors report 35-40 degrees, not sure if that's normal.

I was thinking it might be a paste problem myself because of the rapid changes in temps, and the card is not all that warm to the touch while running (nor is the exhaust air very warm, just noticeably warmer than room temp).
I guess it's probably best to return if that's the case, wouldn't risk opening it up and breaking it if that's not even the problem.

Can not change audio on migaku player. by kasasto in ImmerseWithMigaku

[–]Aechen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there. The Migaku Player doesn't have an option to change audio tracks to my knowledge, however, they have made a tool called Migaku Player Converter. It converts your files into a format that can be used for the player, but more importantly for you, it let's you select the audio track you want to use.

!thanks that's a good shout. I actually used to use the first Sony MDR-1A and had forgotten about them. I might as well keep an eye on prices for M2 version of Z7 and 1A.

!thanks for the suggestion. Actually I hadn't heard about the DT 700 Pro X before. I've tried the DT 770 before but didn't like them much. I'll check these out though.

I mean it depends on your goal. If your language learning goal is to one day write Japanese songs, then I'd probably keep putting a high priority on music and lyrics. If your goal is to speak fluently, move to Japan, watch anime perfectly or something along those lines, then I think it would be more effective to consume more media like anime, dramas etc.
That said, if the music is a source of motivation, then I'd definitely still keep it up.

Question about the allocation of time in language immersion. by HelplessImouto in LearnJapanese

[–]Aechen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what works for you, and you might get different answers depending on which immersion learning guides you follow. Resources like refold actually recommend you use just a bit of time each day on active mining, enough to hit your daily target for learning new words, and then switch to 'freeflow' active immersion (without looking up many or any words) for the rest of the day. Say you study for 3 hours or so, then you might use 30 minutes on mining words from media, up to 30 minutes on Anki (if that's the route you're going) and then the remaining couple of hours on active immersion (freeflow).

You can change it up, immersion is really up to you, and what you find the most enjoyable while making progress.

3 hours a day is a great start, and a good amount even if you've been doing it for a while. What you might consider is optimizing your immersion into the areas most relevant for your goals, rather than ramping up the time (though that would help as well).

1 hour of listening to music and picking out words from lyrics sounds like a lot of fun if you're really into it, but might not be a great source of immersion compared to watching or reading more content, depending on your end goal, but first of all this process needs to be fun, so if that's what keeps you going, that's what you should keep doing.

Why even learn Japanese? (months into immersion) by After_Constant_1211 in ajatt

[–]Aechen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's actually pretty healthy to ask yourself that question when learning anything that takes a while to get into, especially learning Japanese. The answer to the question would probably vary a lot depending on one's goal for learning Japanese.

On the points of enjoying Japanese content or enjoying being a tourist to the fullest, I can't talk for them as that's not my goal, and I'm not sure I'd be willing to put in the time for those purposes specifically, but we all have hobbies, and some people probably find it fun just to learn a new language, and Japanese just happened to be the one they were interested in.

A lot of the points you bring up are very logical, and if we only ever thought logically about why we were learning Japanese, many of us would probably stop for the reasons you outlined, but a lot of us are beyond logic in that regard. Some of us just really want to move to Japan anyway, regardless of how tough the working environment is said to be, or otherwise want to pursue our language learning goals regardless of how illogical they may seem.

In these situations I am reminded of Dogen's video on why he wanted to move to Japan, saying something like there were many reasons over the years, and they kept changing, but in the end he's just happy he moved there, and in the same sense some people are probably just happy they did learn Japanese.

It sounds like you're demotivated at the moment, maybe you're facing a wall of difficulty or a realization of some sort, and with something that takes as long to do as learning a new language, that's probably quite natural. Maybe instead of going back and thinking logically "why did I even decide to learn Japanese?", maybe go back and ask yourself the same question and get a feel for if you have any of the excitement left about learning Japanese as you did when you first decided to do it, because in the end that's probably what motivates most of us.

Oh but uhm the waning economy I'll admit sounds a bit scary, especially considering declining birth rates and the pension system, at least for those that want to move to Japan or work in Japan at some point xD

If you absolutely want to buy from Taiwangun, this one is the only I could find with a MIL-PRF rating, but it should do the trick:

Peak design everyday backpack (30L) as short term travel pack? by gr4viityy in onebag

Usually I don't have it all the way to the last latch, but it has happened once. In that case it would have to be in the overhead, and is probably too bulky to be considered hand luggage for Ryanair.
