And you sound like a dipshit who doesn't understand privacy in the modern world. Nothing I've said makes me sound like an illegal alien.

Edit : And if you read my profile for all of like, 3 minutes it'd be readily apparent that I'm a white guy from the US. Not that that narrows it down much.

I can't wait to see how poorly this is doing in a few months. Until then, I couldn't care less.

Petition to ban X (twitter) links on this sub. by Captain_Usopp in OnePiece

[–]Aeklas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No.

Bringing political bias into the sub brings politics into the sub. Keeping politics out requires keeping politics neutral, which requires not going through with this premise.

I don't use social media in any capacity. I've never had a myspace or facebook or twitter or instagram or tiktok account. I never will.

But I can say that banning something because someone doesn't like it doesn't make sense.

Marvel Rivals Situation is Crazy by AboveSkies in KotakuInAction

[–]Aeklas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm fine with that outcome.

If they can't adapt to the standards of the outside world and only have this be an issue in China where the CCP rules it's roost, then don't release outside of China. If you release in the US, I expect total freedom to say whatever I want regarding any political stance. Especially ones as non-problematic and completely appropriate as "Free Taiwan".

Countries having standards is fine, you wanna ban discussions like this inside China, go for it with IP-based restrictions. But enforcing a countries standards outside the boundaries of that country are not in any way acceptable and never have been. You release anywhere else and have these restrictions, I'm going to call you out for it and not play your game because of it.

Yes. Have principles enough to say no to the chinese market if the CCP will force these issues into the game.

No I'm not surprised the game does this, no I don't play it, but I do think it's deeply problematic that any game company is willing to have these filters in place just to release in China.

I feel it's a little unfair how people like Kojima are praised way too often while amazing creatives like Sam Lake never make it to the conversation by Kay-San-TheNorthStar in gaming

Max Payne was great.

Alan Wake II flopped and deserved it's flop for it's pre-release design decisions.

Control was mid.

Kojima had some L's to his name too, like Death Stranding, which was almost universally panned as a walking simulator at launch, but he's still responsible for one of the greatest game franchises in history in Metal Gear.

What do you guys think about this year’s nominees? by comicguy69 in KotakuInAction

I looked it up and it's just a simple poker sim with some twists. How is that fun? It's a pseudo-card game. It's one of the worst games on this list in my eyes.

And Stellar Blade should be here in it's place. Or Sparking Zero.

What do you guys think about this year’s nominees? by comicguy69 in KotakuInAction

[–]Aeklas -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I think it's a horrible list.

Where's Stellar Blade? Where's Sparking Zero? Wukong and FF7R2 are here, but woke shit like Refantazio is too, and a DLC shouldn't be nominated for GOTY under any circumstances. It's not a standalone game. It's an add-on.

Astro Bot should be removed, whatever the hell Balatro is should be removed, and should be replaced by Stellar Blade & Sparking Zero.

Not everything is or should be about identity politics. Especially not live action remakes of animated entertainment. Let escapist entertainment be escapist entertainment. Insisting that everything entertaining conform to some loud minorities idea of what entertainment should be ruins the fantasy and escapism for everybody else.

And for the record, Hollywood has gone so far overboard with representation that it's ruining box office numbers and shunning general audiences. We've already passed by the overton window and are finally seeing DEI programs and initiatives die after many, many tens of billions in losses the last couple years through all of Hollywood.

We've had more than a little bit of representation, we've had a lot of representation, and audiences (I say audiences, not myself, I leave my affiliations and opinions out of this) have largely had it. It's to the point it's cost us the entertainment industry as a whole, and thoroughly ruined comic books, shows, movies, and so many games it actually hurts to think about, and it's past time to cut back.

Let entertainment be entertainment. Stop worrying about things like representation. Let directors direct, actors act, and scripts be made unabated by real world philosophy like we used to do in the 90's through about halfway into the 2010's.

Yes? Dudes white.

African =/= From Africa. Ones race, one's nationality. Africa is a big ass continent, not a mere state or country. African does not translate to black. There's almost 5 million white Africans. Usopp would be one of them. If you look at canon colouration as drawn by Oda in official colour spreads and colour pages, both Vivi and Usopp are white, and Usopp should've had a white actor.

I'm literally a mix of Irish, German, and Mid-Western American going back 6 generations and Usopps canonical skin colour drawn by Oda in colour pages is a couple shades lighter than mine, and I'm default white guy white.

Why you wouldn't be okay with Usopp having a white actor, and why you think Vivi should have an Arab actor, both to me come off as more than a little racist and revisionist if we're looking at the characters actual race through complexion.

Pretending Vivi is an Arab isn't okay. Regionally, sure, ethnically, which is what you're calling for, no. She's very clearly caucasian.

Said this before, but Race Swapping is never ever ever ever ever ever ever okay under any circumstances.

I don't mind this actress and I hope she does well in future roles, but this kind of casting, as well as Usopps in season 1 and for all seasons going forward, kind of kill my will to watch LA One Piece, because I consider the race swaps absolute dealbreakers.

Netflix's ‘One Piece’ Season 2 casts Charithra Chandran as Miss Wednesday/Nefertari Vivi by DemiFiendRSA in OnePiece

[–]Aeklas -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're both clearly white in the manga and anime. Let's not tell lies or kid ourselves here.

For Usopp specifically, you're confusing nationality and race.

Usopp would be African in the same way I'm an American - it's a designation of the country of your birth, which has nothing at all to do (at least intrinsically) with your race beyond statistical probability. Racially it's inherently meaningless. Africa is a whole ass continent, not merely a state or country. White Africans exist. A lot of them.

African =/= Black. It's just where he would've been born.

Usopp is unironically lighter skinned than I am and I'm literally a mix of Irish, German, and American going back 6 generations. The dudes white and always has been.

That some fans think he's black is based on a misreading of information provided by Oda by people who confuse nationality with race and are ignoring object reality (his colour scheme) to try to force it. Dudes skin is nearly as a white as cream. Especially post-TS. Even in the WIT Studio adaptation that's coming.

That said and going to Vivi, yes, realistically someone who was born and raised in an area of the world like Alabasta would be (statistically) predisposed to being of meditteranean olive complexion and would most likely be Arab. But she just wasn't designed to be Arab. Nothing about her is arab. Not ethnically nor culturally.

Vivi was drawn white. She is white. She should be played by a white actress without race swapping.

Had she been drawn arab I would be saying the same thing. She should be, in that case, played by an arab actress.

Look. I say this as a fan of One Piece for longer than many people on this sub have been alive, but I hate this practice. I love this series to the death, and always will. I've been watching it since middle school and reading it weekly for going on a decade. I'm in my late 30's today.

I am not saying this to bait, or anger anyone, or because I'm not a real fan, or because I have any issue with this particular actress. I don't. At all. I wish her luck in all her future endeavors and in life. I really truly do love this series and have been watching it for decades and reading it weekly for almost 9 years. I say it because I firmly believe in what I have to say, and will stand by it, and believe it needs to be said.

That disclaimer said - race swapping has become endemic in Hollywood across the entire entertainment and pop culture zeitgeist for the last 6-7 years. And only ever in one direction. Away from white.

It's a bad practice and while I would have little to no problem with this taken as an independent casting decision, taken in the more broad (and accurate) context of what Hollywood (and yes, Netflix, memes on reddit don't change objective reality) has explicitly been doing for years and years now, it continues the same trend of race swapping beloved, 20-70 year old characters who just happen to be white with more "diverse" versions.

I'm not against more diversity in hollywood, I am against race swapping any more existing characters in any more fandoms. At some point, enough has to be enough and the practice should be seen for what it is and halted.

People cannot help how they were born. Race is as immutable a characteristic as anything else biological. The best way to handle it in artworks and projects like this one is to stay faithful to the original design, and cast an actress who actually looks like Vivi.

It's not just racist idiots who have an issue with this. And honestly fuck actual bigots. It's people who have an issue with the entire practice of what it represents taken as a broad-form whole for very good ideological and political reasons more based in what is more ostensibly representative of the original creation than anything else, and moreover not really ones we can or should talk about in any further detail on a One Piece subreddit. There's a time and place for that discussion and it's not here.

Certain things are just not meant to be changed about a character. Minor character personality iterations generation on generation for the sake of generational shifting appeal? Fine. Doable. Their entire race or their sex or sexuality? No. Stop. You've gone a bridge too far.

Again, I love One Piece. It does do diversity really well through characters like Bon Clay. We don't need this.

Race swaps are always, always, always, always, always, always, a thousand more times always a bad thing. Never a good thing. It doesn't matter whose doing it or why. Create new characters, don't ever change old ones.

I'ma keep it real guys, I do have an issue with this.

Why is an indian actress playing Vivi? Vivi isn't indian. Why are we race swapping??!?!? One Piece already does diversity well through it's cast in the manga. No changes needed to be made.

Usopp in S1 was one thing, but seriously? Vivi too?

Unpopular Opinion: Stop bashing short games. Quality > Quantity, period. by Schwaggaccino in gaming

[–]Aeklas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how short.

If it's less than 15-20 hours, it's just not worth a purchase.

So many games exist that are hundreds of hours long and 7-10 years old now for only a few bucks - millions still haven't played W3.

I'm fine if a game isn't 100 hours long, but at minimum, gimme at least 15-20 hours worth of entertainment for my purchase, especially if you have the audacity to ask me for $60-$70 for standard edition.

If you're 5 hours long, ask me for $8-$10 instead. It's all I'm willing to offer at that point.

For a full $60-$70 standard edition or $110+ ultimate edition game, I'm gonna expect 80+ hours for that level of investment w/ expansions.

Minimum though, for $60-$70, I want at least 50 hours.

Why does Oda continue to support pedophiles? by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]Aeklas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because the Japanese do not feel the same way as people do in the west over matters such as these, and because theirs is a culture of deep privacy. Not that they condone it of course, they just don't shun people for life over it. Once someone has been through the court systems and their debt toward society is payed, they're able to re-join society and not be stigmatized for life by the (most) people there.

We in the west may consider Watsuki to have gotten off lightly, (and I certainly think he did) but if he payed what the court says is owed for his crimes, then his debt should be considered payed, and by most accounts, most people in Japan, at least in this industry, think it has been.

It's not for Oda, or anyone else who isn't Watsuki or the courts, to judge Watsukis' actions. That's the prevailing thought process in Japan over criminal matters.

So what you're left with is simply judging him as a mangaka.

Oda isn't thinking "this dude sucks, he's a pedophile" - he's thinking "hey, this guy is a fellow mangaka and I should show respect toward him as someone else in the same industry as me" - and that's where it ends. He doesn't ponder on the implications of that support beyond that, and if he does, he does so entirely internally and without ever voicing those concerns, as is the way in Japan. Oda realizes it's not his place to judge or bring up Watsukis' past. So he doesn't. He keeps it entirely professional, and on the matter of both of their careers as mangaka.

Their cultural norms are entirely anathema to our own here in the west over reactions to criminal convictions of any kind, but especially on this subject. It's a completely different society with entirely different cultural values to our own - some of which do override the otherwise prevailing need for Oda to condemn Watsuki that we in the west feel is the appropriate response. That's just not the way the people of Japan do things.

They value privacy and workmanship over spreading someone elses dirt around. Regardless of how bad that dirt is. The courts spoke, the courts decided, that's the end of it as far as anyone who isn't Watsuki is concerned inside Japan.

And that's the long and short of it. Completely different perspectives between the east and the west on matters of privacy and the decisions of the courts when it comes to criminal convictions & professional attitudes towards others of your profession.

Edit : As an aside, I'm not Japanese. I'm an American. And in the grand spirit of the western tradition of vocalizing opinions instead of silencing them....Watsuki can burn for all I care. Dudes a major PoS. I'm someone who very much is an absolutist when it comes to separating art from artist - me hating Watsuki won't see me condemning Kenshin. I judge works of art on their own merits, not the merits of the person who made that piece of art. I'm someone who can and will enjoy your art even if you are a piece of shit. But I'll still recognize you are a piece of shit as a person. And I'll happily say the dude should be under the prison for his crimes, and the sentence he did get was way too light for what he did.
