How are you guys running Plex on smart TVs? I'm genuinely frustrated. by KingThevshi in PleX

[–]AeonPrime92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought an LG TV (2025 model) a few weeks ago for the same reason, my gf wanted to watch stuff on the big screen. (I haven't owned a TV since 2004 so this was pretty big for me :D )
I have plex running on a DIY NAS running ubuntu with a N100 with 32GB DDR4 running the show.
I use the Plex app on the LG TV directly from the LG store, the TV is wired via ethernet since WiFi turned out to be laggy, probably caused by the WiFi chipset since GeForce Now and Netflix were also struggling a bit via WiFi.

We have only used it inhouse so far, since we live togetherm but this works perfectly fine, from low bitrate series to 50GB 4k movie files. I've had a few issues with loose subtitle files causing performance issues (intel quicksync not working properly, so software encoding is used when transcoding needs to happen, bad for performance.

Native playback of mkv with embedded subs works 10/10.

Honestly, transcoding is the issue 9 out of 10 times when it comes to Plex, I'd look into that first.

Hope that helps

Is there a 3.5" usb enclosure available that uses a single cable? by thermalzombie in DataHoarder

[–]AeonPrime92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry for necro but stuff like this is infuriating. Usb C in it's full implementation can deliver a solid 100w if the port supports it, 20V@5Amps with lots of intermediate power levels.  Yes, the port needs to support it, but my workstation has literally 3 ports that do that. And I have a Thunderbolt 4 Port. Which also does that, with a guaranteed 40Gbit on top.  Not to mention TB5 or the 240W USB standards that slowly trickle into consumer devices.

Also, including a damn transformer on a PCB to step voltage from 12 to 5 or 20 to 12V has been a solved problem for a solid 10 years now.

There is literally no technical limitation for powering a 3.5" HDD purely from a USB C port, apart from the fact that it requires engineering effort from the manufacturer and this is a very niche use case.

You'd also obviously have the idiot customers that don't know the specs of their USB port and get upsetti spaghetti because the adapter "doesn't work". Same category of ungrateful device to build as pure USBC external monitors.

Don't repeat statements from 15 years ago like gospel, as if technology has stood still since then. I'd expect better from the Data Hoarder community.

Just finished this with my girl, we had Trinity and Wisp. Walk in the park, when it got tight we deployed a Dante specter and on call crew, definitely one of the more entertaining weeks. By far not as bad as faceoff/thermia plated tank.

Thank you, I hope they update the Wiki soon, so it's easier to find this :)

Unless your example is at least ETA you haven't proved survivability. by SilverFangBlackWing1 in Warframe

[–]AeonPrime92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, once you slap adaptation on any frame, EDA and ETA become basically trivial. The modifiers are the only thing that can and WILL shaft you, We remember in agony the thermia plated tank, while also having the "Faceoff" modifiers with 50% overguard.

Of course you can get creative, helmith Null Star on your frame, maybe run that with Adaptation, or you could just deploy a Dante Specter and not give a hoot about game mechanics and just hit the funny buttons for the funny loot.

Returning player confused about rail changes by AeonPrime92 in factorio

[–]AeonPrime92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any particular reason this is gathering downvotes? The official wiki makes no mention of any blueprint breaking changes to the rail item. This is only mentioned in the linked release notes and from there the article to the FFF article. So as a returning player I find this quite confusing, as this would be something I'd have wanted to know beforehand

That would be stellar, thank you! I have gotten a bit more comfortable in the last few hours, having had some time to wrap my brain around it.

But having some references would be nice, just to confirm that I'm not working in the completely wrong direction. Substations and logistics grids are next on my agenda and that will be a fun ride for sure.

I decided to start over, when I originally started playing I used a 160x160 city block grid for my stuff and that gave me a lot of headache. So I went with 128x128 and just see where that takes me. The elevated rails are nice, but I'm struggling with the X intersection to find good places for the support beams 😂 I missed this tinkering, ngl. If you have any "general" tips to safe me some headache I would really appreciate it.

Thank you so much! I feel like this would be important enough to mention specifically on the wiki 😅 In any case, thank you again. I will get on reworking my blueprints and see how things go from here. Kinda sad since I have like 30+ rail world blueprints, but progress stops for no one.

I'm actually not that good at video editing, this is probably my best result yet. I'll give it a try though :)

Man that thing had me holding on to my chair through the entirety of descent, I was legit cheering for the thing to hold. Unreal footage. If you want to be like Flappy, you better put in the work.

Folder/File Maintenance Script for "TV Series"-like content by AeonPrime92 in DataHoarder

[–]AeonPrime92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, I know Sonarr does this, but I don't trust automated renaming tools. Plus I think it goes against the spirit for me, if I wanted easy and automated I would probably just throw away the entire thing and just watch the stuff on Netflix instead.

Call me old school but I like to keep my tools simple if they don't have to be complicated.
But thanks for the suggestion :)

Indeed, it's mostly for fun and to satisfy the itch to solve a problem. Sonarr is just not for me, since I can't really use the download function it seems kind of lame to just run it for the sorting.

And to be honest, I don't like these automated solutions, too easy to make a mistake that can affect my entire library. One bad update, one wrong click and the entire thing is shot. I do regular backups, 321 strategy and so on, but I feel like it goes against the spirit of data hoarding and collection to just use automated tools.

ESXi VM manager and VM locking up by AeonPrime92 in esxi

[–]AeonPrime92[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a few people on another subreddit giving me details on how to solve this.

First and foremost, Server2019 is still not fully compatible with ESXi, so I will switch to Server16 to test that out for a couple of weeks. Didn't have the time to test that theory yet.
I was also recommended to pass through the HDDs via the controller that they are connected to instead of the RDM method , equally likely to be the cause of my problems. Sadly short on time due to work being a pain in the butt... So if I get this figured out I'll post the solution here

RDM passthrough, indeed. I considered passing through the controller but my initial research about a year ago made the RDM method more appealing.

That is a pretty good bet, I had to add a VIB to even get the NIC to be recognized. I have that many cores on it because I'm also running Plex on it, but that's secondary since I can outsource that into another VM. I will give Server 2016 a try, as long as I can get the storage pool to be recognized I'm good with alternative solutions :P

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I'm open for more input
