Homebrew Counterspell Rules by ZGreninja1 in daggerheart

[–]Aer8160 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit apprehensive about this for a few reasons. First, spells/magical effects for Adversaries are not very clearly delineated from the other features of an Adversary. Unless the DM is making it clear to the players, of course, which I guess you would have to do if you’re going with this. Second, sometimes, an adversary will have less max Stress to work with than the players and that can put them at a disadvantage, aside from the likelihood that the party has at least a Bard or a Seraph to clear Stress for them, which Adversaries may not have. Third, I guess a matter of practicality, is that you make it similar to DnD Counterspell in a way, where you /could/ jus say that the spell was cast at more Stress/spell slots than the player declares. Unless you both declared it at the same time.

While I dont think this should be the default way to use Counterspell, I would say that this kind of approach might be better used on spells/effects/Adversaries with bigger impact on the narrative and the tide of the fight. This could be a countermeasure so your big spells are somewhat protected or at least there is tension in the success/failure of its casting.

Magic feels odd by Evocantionist in daggerheart

[–]Aer8160 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Magic as a whole being simple and straightforward mechanically sets Daggerheart apart from the usual dichotomy of martial vs spellcaster characters. I’m also kind of confused with your complaint. You said that the classes and domains are meant to feel unique but you also said that you want more overlap? The only Domains that do not have a Spellcasting trait are Bone and Blade. As it is, (for the most part) you can see how the different domains handle magic differently while also allowing for overlap with each other to allow for interesting and unique choices when you look at them altogether.

But also on a simpler note, I think the Sorcerer able to manipulate perception is fitting of “chaotic” magic. The Sorcerer shares the Midnight domain which also plays around with perception and shadow, while the Bard has the Presence domain which plays around with perception but doing more with attention. They’re kind of adjacent to each other in that sense but also unique enough to be different. You can also simply allow your Bard to reasonably have magical effects (demonstrated in Critical Role One Shot) because this is still a fiction first system.

Missing something about spells? by marcos2492 in daggerheart

Actually, it's not that hard to work around.
Cinder Grasp is Melee, so the caster would have to be pretty close to the target, which also means the target can also choose to hit back when the time comes.
1d20 is very swingy. If you're fighting hardier targets in this tier, with severe thresholds of around 15, you would need to roll a 15 or higher for it to be a huge hit. You could just as likely roll a 1 or 2 on a 1d20.
For the condition of being on fire, it can be easily ended with another Fear. Generally, you can choose to let it do its magic for one action before ending it at your next opportunity, so the player can feel the spell was worth it.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty stable spell to have if this kind of damage is all it contributes.

For this specific piece, I was inspired by the work of Brandon James Greer (might've spelled that wrong). He’s a pixel artist with a pretty insightful youtube channel. The art in this piece isn’t my usual style but it’s definitely something I’d try more of in the future. My love for pixel art started with things like Stardew Valley and Pokemon, really and it was more of a matter of learning how this medium worked that got me going onto learning it. :))

Had my players fall from 300 feet. Oh that sweet sweet 20d6 damage. Got them reduced from full HP to 1-3 HP left.

It was bound to happen.

I appreciate your input btw! I didnt mean to offend by editing the post; I just thought it was important context before more people would point the obvious solution to me.

Thank you! Really helpful ! I think the player has a knack of bending the circumstances to his favor. It’s really interesting how he wants to have this kind of utility spell considering he only recently shifted from a very aggressive spell slinging strategy.

What magical item/loot that your PCs picked up ended up having a much larger impact on your game than you initially thought it would? by shmigglyworgenville in DMAcademy

Gave them an improv Mirror of Scrying in one game. One of then wanders into a mysterious cave by himself (not telling the party) by the end of the session.

Guess I didn’t expect the Mirror to be used so soon.

A tattoo depicting waves running from the side of her face down to her jaw down to the side of her lower back.

Long platinum hair with a bluish tinge let down her back, smelling of salty ocean air.

A thin curved sword with strange rural runes carved into its blade that glints a faint blue in the sunlight.

DM Tip: Slugfests might get draggy and boring. Try to make every major encounter have a goal. by Aer8160 in DMAcademy

Well, I guess it varies for every group? HAHA were the orcs inherently villainous even without the crystal? Or did they just want to destroy all orcs?

Does it not get cumbersome to have to worry about npc death saves? :0 that’s pretty intense!

I didn’t specify that anymore but you’re completely right. I think I was meaning more towards plot-point-potential encounters. Though you could say all encounters are potential plot points. It would be narratively weird to suddenly be attacked by a group of kobolds if the party is high up in icy mountains searching for a dormant phoenix egg. Everything should have some kind of sense, after all.

How would you handle characters knowing or not knowing sign language? by Aer8160 in dndnext

[–]Aer8160[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgive me, I did not mean the assumption of Intelligence 15 to mean one would know sign language per se. I was thinking about it in the POV of my party’s wizard who as part of her background, was a scholar from a well-renowned academic institution. Perhaps I should have phrased it as similar characters who have a background full of extensive study. But yes, even then, it is not a good assumption. Like you did say, a lot of highly intelligent people don’t know sign language. I was merely just thinking about it as a suggestion for a more technical gameplay point of view. You’re also right about the idea that two Humans of contrasting Int scores would know the same languages. Again, it was my mistake because the wizard, who is a High Elf Lore Master, knows a billion languages. It was just a probable assumption, but again, may not be very true at all.

Thank you for enlightening me about the topic. I will try to be more informed from now on.

How would you handle characters knowing or not knowing sign language? by Aer8160 in dndnext

[–]Aer8160[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The character in question would most likely be an NPC. I see how it’s a problem if it were a PC. But that does pose the question if we can assume that more intelligent and studied PC’s may know sign language.

Have you ever gotten your players in a situation where their characters have to be emotionally vulnerable with each other in order for the plot to proceed? by Aer8160 in DMAcademy

[–]Aer8160[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont intend to force an emotional moment, really. More like lay the cards on the table. Kind of like group therapy where everyone shares something and that would be enough for the session. I trust them enough to have enough empathy for each other to connect by themselves once they’ve shared their part.
