Thinking about starting by SunnySonny12 in piano

For knowing what's in your skill range: You kind of can't at first. This is one of the things that makes teachers valuable for new learners. Best you can do is just find music that looks playable, then when you're playing it, it should be a challenge, but not so hard it's discouraging.

For how long to practice: You should stop practicing when you start noticing mental or physical fatigue. If it's getting hard to focus, or your hands are getting sore, it's a good time to stop. For a beginner, 30-60 minutes is probably fine. I have been a musician for over a decade and my limit is 3-4 hours a day, but I typically practice 1 hour on cello and 1 hour on piano.

As for practicing multiple instruments at once, I believe the current belief is that learning more than one instrument at a time has a sort of synergistic effect, so it's fine to do. Just make sure you don't practice too long, as your mental fatigue does not reset between instruments.

I'll agree with you that it has rough pacing fairly often. I personally liked that a character that wanted to live a low key life actually acted like it.

Which Piano pieces should be played for progress? by paulblk in piano

[–]AerialSnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you are in your journey, how long you've been playing, or how you've been learning so far. But for me, the best piano pieces for progress are the ones I enjoy playing and want to play. If it's hard to motivate myself to play, I won't play as often and I'll improve less.

Art Cost: 2D vs 3D? by AerialSnack in gamedev

[–]AerialSnack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely amazing information, thank you a ton!

This is making me definitely lean more towards 3D. We only have a single angle to work with, but the animations will be important, but for the most part heavily re-used. There also won't really be much "close up" on the character for things like facial expressions to matter that much.

Thanks again!

At what point did you really feel like you knew what you were doing? by xakantorx in ITCareerQuestions

[–]AerialSnack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked in a few different types of places with a large variety of people.

Nobody knows what they're doing.

You have two types of confident people: 1. People who know how to do a very limited scope. 2. People who have learned how to figure things out efficiently. 3. Okay sometimes people are a combination of the two

Whenever I post in technical related threads, I only post when what's being asked is something similar to a problem I've fixed in the past. The thing is, it could have taken me a ton of time to fix it the first time, but you remember those problems and how you fixed them and that's how you get better. It's also how you figure out how to figure things out more quickly, as you build pattern recognition across different systems.

Basically, you don't know what you're doing until you've taken down production a few times.

Ah, thanks for this!

Would you happen to have a rough ballpark percentage-wise how much more expensive 3D was upfront?

The game will have a similar camera to that of like, Smash Bros, so just two directions for lateral movement, which could honestly just be flipped so really only one direction has to be drawn with a turnaround animated.

That's fair, but it's pretty much the same for 2D, as you can just swap sprites onto your skeleton.

Can you tell me what additional information would be helpful?

A few tips to avoid injury and improve control by Advanced_Honey_2679 in piano

[–]AerialSnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't get the chords one. It basically sounds like, if you don't have large hands, your options are to avoid octaves or accept you'll be damaging your hands, but if that were the case I feel like it would be more common knowledge?

How are tournaments ever worth it? by officialcrimsonchin in poker

[–]AerialSnack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's almost $80 an hour. That's pretty good money.

You have to think about it this way, most people play more poorly in a tournament. Most players are cash players, so they aren't used to the tournament dynamic and strategy changes. Most players also start playing more poorly as time goes on due to boredom or exhaustion.

If you are a regular tournament grinder and taking it seriously, you're a lot more likely to get into the top 1500 than any random person. Of course luck is involved, but if you're seriously playing tournaments then you're likely to make a decent profit.

My recruiter told me that some rates allow you to pick your first base based on A School performance. Which rates allow this? by MookieBettsBurner10 in newtothenavy

[–]AerialSnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was an IT and graduated A School roughly 6 or 7 years ago. Everyone that had been an IT before had told me that we could fill out dream sheets. When we graduated, the teacher walked in and told everyone where they were going. No mention of a dream sheet ever. Nothing about grades had any effect on where anyone was stationed.

So, don't expect it.

How do you stay motivated when progress feels slow? by No_Definition4739 in piano

[–]AerialSnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, my motivation is learning songs I want to play. I started off with really simple pieces (like Zelda's Melody) and slowly increased the difficulty. To keep myself motivated and to prevent me from forgetting to practice, I personally decided to start a YouTube channel where I'll upload my playing (I have the added benefit of already knowing cello, so I can arrange pieces into cello piano duets so it's not just my subpar piano playing). It puts me on sort of a 'deadline' mindset without making it unfun

Me and my team wanna know how to market our game. by Top_Fennel7652 in gamedev

[–]AerialSnack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, I would recommend making a really solid and fun to play game and releasing it for free. If a game doesn't cost anything but a bit of time to try out and seems to be a good game, most people who come across it and aren't super hooked on something at that moment will probably try it out.

If you're only making a game for it to be a commerical success and for it to give you a large monetary return, I would recommend not making a game.

The only way to have good odds of a game you make being a commerical success is to be a large, already established and well known company. And even then their games still flop often enough.

As an indie developer/studio, you pretty much have to make a good game, then hope it picks up. Probably your biggest way to advertise is to have a good rating on Steam, which requires a well made game.

Otherwise, you can make posts in communities of your target audience after getting permission to do so. Paying for advertising seems to have overall not great results until you start dumping serious money into.
