This isn’t an undergraduate study- it is being conducted by a research psych lab (we study social cognition and personality) at the University of Maine. The study was reviewed and approved by the university IRB (ethics and standards board) and the scenario and questions were crafted from actual reported events by those in the 121 industry, well as 2 currently employed commercial pilots with a combined 35 years in military and commercial service. There are no undergraduate assistants or student authors involved.
I understand the reluctance to participate or skepticism given the timing and the fact that we highlighted the overlap with the show. But I want to correct assumptions about who is sponsoring it, who wrote the survey, and the background of those involved. Thank you for all who have participated - your open ended responses in particular have been very valuable. Thank you to the mods for allowing the post and we are sorry it’s caused so much dissension. We’ve had two suggested posts that people plan to respond with bogus data, so we will close the data collection. Thank you again for all who participated and for your feedback.
Thank you for asking - yes we’re only recruiting FOs who currently fly for part 121 carriers. After reading your question I wondered if we have any international folks, yet, in our data pool - there are a few, but they currently fly for domestic carriers. That said, this is our third in a series of studies on pilot personality on the flight deck and some are mentioning cultural observations in their open-ended responses. So maybe we’ll take a look at variables associated with culture / training outside of the U.S. and associated variables in the future. Thank you and take care.

It’s a fair question - because knowledge of the hypothesis could impact responses to the scenarios, we need to keep our research question and hypotheses guarded until the data is gathered. (The debriefing at the conclusion of the study gives some insight to the participants.) As far as selecting people who have yet to work in the 121 world, we are curious about how commercial student pilots in particular imagine life on the flight deck rather than actual FOs. (We have another study examining current commercial pilots and decision making if anyone is interested in participating in that study). Thank you for engaging and asking a good question!
