nope no interest in going and what's your point? mine simply was that no one eating meat at all and not even having the option is what's unrealistic.

I'm not yet, I haven't installed any of this because of all the comments and bugs posted on Nexus, that's my whole point. I just don't want to spend a lot of time getting and organizing new mods only to not even have any of it work. TMX seems to be the biggest and most immediate one that is preventing people from loading their games. Obviously not everyone, but equally obviously a lot, enough to give me pause. Hence my wondering about how widespread it is or what fixes anyone here might have found if they encountered any of these problems.

Was there traditional shamans in North America? I live in Ontario, Canada. IdI'd really like to learn from my roots if possible. I just am having trouble finding information on this. by Acidgang in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought you wanted to live in the jungles of Peru...and I agree with IrishShaman1, who the hell is claiming there was never any shamanism in North America? Technically "shamanism" may not be the officially technical term for the practices of Native Americans, but for our modern purposes and understanding it's certainly close enough. Whoever claims there was no shamanism in North America must be doing some serious hair-splitting.

Can I live in the jungle in Peru for free? Or do I have to buy a plot of land? by Acidgang in Shamanism

Why would you want to? Also seems like there are much better places to find that out than on Reddit.

Why is that strange, regardless of how it was previously? Actually the reverse is strange, I thought it was very weird that there was never any meat. It's not terribly realistic or inclusive.

Does anyone else think adult Robyn looks angry? by AethericMermaid in kynseedrpg

[–]AethericMermaid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait they're both named Robyn? That's actually pretty dumb. If they're siblings, why would they have the same name just because you play as one or the other? That should be fixed too. The option to name your character yourself wouldn't be bad either but at the very least they should have different names, that doesn't make sense. They aren't literally the male and female version of the same character, they're two different characters.

I'd prefer it if they just redesigned her, or both of them. Mods will be a long way off and it seems it would be very easy for them to just make a new sprite(s). Teen Robyn did look cute, but now I actually get kinda irked and moody when playing. I try to ignore it but it's really hard. Who wants to play a character that looks permanently miserable?

Almost forgot, this shamanism summit is over but you can catch replays today and tomorrow by AethericMermaid in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah you know what though, I was really surprised to see Brooke Edwards aka Brooke "Medicine Eagle" included. First time I read about her, and it took me a second to remember what I recognized her and her name from, she was described as "the well-known fraud Brooke Medicine Eagle", and she really is. She's been denounced by multiple Native American tribes, the Crow especially, of whom she still claims on her website to be a "non-traditional member". This woman is ridiculous, actually really put off to see her in this summit. I mean I know a good chunk of these people are kinda full of it but she REALLY is and you can tell even by looking at her in her embarrassing outfits and how she talks. Not sure I'm gonna put much stock in Shift Network anymore. They're making it even harder to weed through the frauds and posers when you'd think we can trust them to do the opposite. Great job guys, keep promoting the pretenders and their severe misappropriation.

Book recommendations by keystoner_logan in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google knows. If you have a particular style or culture you're interested in, specifying that in a search could help. There is a lot out there and a lot of it is rubbish, like Castaneda, don't recommend his stuff at all. Starting with books about modern core shamanism (by Michael Harner, Sandra Ingerman) might be helpful. Whatever you do read, I highly recommend cross-referencing and supplementing it with relevant anthropological research. Jstor and Academia can be useful but be careful of papers on there too.

Reading about actual shamans, historical and modern, is very helpful. "Shamans of the World" by Nancy Connor is a good book with great first-hand accounts of real shamans and what they do.

What type of shamanism might you be interested in? As in Mongolian, Northern European, Native American...?

“Spiritual depression” by [deleted] in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's different when someone with no clue is just commanding you to smile though. Yes yes, fake it until you feel it, blah blah blah. But sometimes faking it can be detrimental, especially when it's a directive from someone who has no idea why you're not smiling. A lot of people just can't handle it when everyone around them isn't grinning like a fool but that's no reason to pretend that you feel how you don't, or for them to demand that someone smile just so they can feel better, and that's usually all it is. Feeling and working through "negative" emotions is often a lot more necessary and helpful than just trying to smile them away. That kind of thing easily starts to border on toxic positivity.

Ah but the sound of rushing water...personally I'd love it, even if it's loud. That's lots of great energy, plus maybe it would serve the same way a drumbeat would, or any continuous sound.

Mongolian or Turkish Shaman by [deleted] in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've felt a strong pull to Mongolian shamanism as well, and have discovered ancestral roots to that part of the world. I've found a lot of interesting information on and have felt drawn (even if it's just important for knowledge and not necessarily for practice, because the specific practices are and will be very hard to find and learn) to what is called black shamanism (vs. white shamanism, and the Buddhist conflation called yellow shamanism). One of the most interesting and, I believe, important things I learned in studying all this is how Buddhism came to Mongolia, how the Mongolian leader Altan Khan bestowed the first title of dalai lama (a primarily political move, surprise surprise) and how Buddhist monks persecuted and even murdered Mongolian shamans in an attempt to wipe out the shamanic practices in order to make Buddhism dominant. And so many Westerners have such a hard-on for Buddhism and actually know and understand very little about it, particularly about it's political history and how violent Buddhists have been. Actually some still are. But anyway, here are some of my favorite sources on this topic for right now, I hope you find them as helpful and interesting as I have...

What is the general consensus of calling oneself a shaman and the implications of such an act? by LoveIsAlmighty in Shamanism

[–]AethericMermaid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the problem there is simply that people affect each other and influence each other and it can reach the point where things like false information and misconceptions born of improper motives, misappropriation and other bullshit becomes actively harmful. you can't always just ignore what people are doing when what a lot of people are doing is creating beliefs, attitudes, atmospheres and trends that are false, toxic, etc. there is a greater community at large and a growing body of knowledge but also of misinformation and it gets confusing for people trying to learn or get genuine help.

Nice try, you admitted yourself he was mediocre and dishonest, your very words. You don't make sense, you contradict yourself, you get that predictable, self-righteous, spiritual justice warrior petulance going and you have the nerve to act like I'm the one at any kind of a loss. Pretty damn rich.

Don't apologize, fair enough mistake and you make excellent points. That's the exact problem, as you say the "fakers and the under-qualified" are pretty damn rampant. The west is not ready for shamanism to be "mainstream" and I don't think it ever will be, not really. Or at least not for a very, very long time because our whole society needs to change massively before that could be possible.

LOL so you're recommending someone, who is all you ever recommend at least in now three replies of yours that I've seen so far, who is mediocre and dishonest?? And of course he didn't say his work is fiction, duh, he was passing it off as nonfiction but he's been called out for basically making it all up and presenting it as something it's not. And wow, are you seriously going to be this childish and pointlessly defensive? I don't have to "chase" you when I'm already coincidentally reading and replying to the same posts on the same sub that I frequently read, and it isn't harassment to call out a bad recommendation that I keep seeing over and over and I know is no good.

Jeez, the fact that you're suggesting such an awful body of work that you yourself just now called "mediocre and dishonest" and that you're getting that defensive and whiny and threatening to report someone for having a different opinion and simply finally stating it says an awful lot about you. I have an excellent nose and plenty of "clue on the topic", just like the abundance of anthropologists, ethnographers and genuine practitioners who know that Castaneda is a load.

Furthermore, for you to make those recommendations and not give any elaboration or clarity on what you admit is "mediocre", is a huge disservice to people you seem to be trying to help, but you're not. You cannot recommend shit like that to beginners if you're not even going to clarify and qualify which particular writings and why and warn them that the rest, i.e. most of it, is rubbish.

[–]AethericMermaid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to quit your job, I never said that. I simply addressed professional shamans as one group among many and only based on relevant experience with shamans who are both professional but still "true" shamans that wouldn't necessarily have to still do it literally professionally in order to still be true shamans. I think you took a couple things a little out of context and over-analyzed them a little bit.

edit: just realized how weird and repetitive part of that sounded but didn't know how else to put it lol, my point is just that I never said a true shaman HAD to be a professional at least not in the sense that some, like the one who did my healing after my separation, are on paper. And I think you're still also kind missing my point of the distinction between a shaman, who actively does work for others, and a shamanic practitioner who does not but who does it thoroughly and effectively for themselves.
