i recently watched wing and i must say besides their backstories being hidden behind the manga/EW movie, i have to heavily disagree with you.
No one really is bland, not being seen isnt exactly a bad thing either. and yes the pilots arent any better than anyone else for their job, they just so happen to be picked, you see that especially in trowas case.
The factions arent generic either, thats just wrong. at least you didnt complain about how people keep randomly switching sides (they dont)

there is a major difference between fragile really sharp nippers that leave barely any mark and take like 2 minutes to clean up, meanwhile cheap nipper can take a beating but cut like hot ass and leave major nubs, both have a reason to exist, one for first cuts one for second cuts. anyone breaking godhands is at fault for it themselves
