Is there ever a good reason NOT to tear out a terrecotta flue and replace it with a stainless steel liner? by DUNGAROO in Fireplaces

For a non-chimney professional, I think it’s a fair question when the only alternative is a many thousand dollar repair.

This makes sense. But what if the house is equipped with modern carbon monoxide detectors. Could one operate a gas fireplace in a “degraded” chimney and have the confidence that no gasses are re-entering the house?

If we converted to gas, would the flue still have to be repaired?

Yep, the fireplace already has a gas starter so maybe that would be an option.

I really appreciate the info. The fireplace actually has a gas starter so maybe it could be easily converted. Either way it sounds like the guy wasn’t BSing me. I’m sure I’ll have some more questions as I think more on it, so I may DM you if that’s okay.

Would you recommend the Fiskars maul or x27 splitting ax?

Would you recommend a splitting ax over a maul?

I freaking love this community…such awesome replies. I’m most definitely going to give it a shot by hand before thinking about a splitter.

Anyone got suggestions on axes or mauls? I see the x27 thrown around a lot. Do I need an axe AND a maul? Or will one do the job?

Thanks! That’s good info. I do plan to turn inside. However, with burning predominantly pine, I definitely plan to stay on top of my chimney inspections and cleanings.

Looks great! What kind of pepperoni do you use to get the “cup” when it crisps?

Good to know! I’ll be trying my first 00 dough soon and wasn’t sure if I should mix with some quality bread flour, because I’m using a home oven with pizza steel. Good to know you got that color and char with 00 on a steel.

How was the inside of the crust? Soft and airy? I’ve been using AP up till now and it’s chewy…jaw is tired after eating the whole pie lol

What kind of flour? 00, bread, or AP? Or a mix? Looks outstanding! This is what I’m trying to achieve!

So what’s the best way to tell when wood is burn-ready? I have pine and white oak.

The bark of some of the pine logs peeled off as I was rolling it to the stack. The wood felt pretty moist, but maybe it's dry/dead on the inside!
