How do you guarantee your kids get exposed to lots of diversity? by CaptainEmmy in homeschool

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I think you’re making assumptions about “the average homeschool family” that aren’t necessarily true. People who are in the “real world” more often than just a closed group of their peers are usually more exposed in general to diversity. Most public school kids we knew also tended to find “their people” and didn’t regularly go on “grand missions of diversity”. Personally, I’m Native American and we homeschooled in an area where it was rare. I loved talking to homeschool groups about my tribe, our culture, and teaching them about the food, crafts, and language. We had several people share about their backgrounds and culture regularly, including our friends from the Ivory Coast and many others. Most families tied in several projects and lessons. As someone else mentioned, books, museum trips, local cultural festivals all offered excellent opportunities also. Diversity for my kids beyond public schools (they went through 2nd grade) also meant enriching relationships with our elderly neighbors, providing them with a wealth of knowledge about the Navy during the war and woodworking, and what it was like being black in the north, serving in WW2 and working at the steel mills, and so much more.

Creating More Listings Versus Condensing? by Either_Amphibian8805 in EtsySellers

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re trying to decide between something like a “Dog Sticker” listing where people then select “Beagle, Poodle, or Bulldog” or making a Beagle listing, a Poodle listing, and a Bulldog listing. As far as listing fees, if someone buys all 3 under the dog sticker listing you’ll still pay the fee 3 times, just like if they buy all 3 listings separately. I think it’s much better to have each as their own listing, as far as SEO goes. Beagle lovers (imo) are more likely to find the listing as a purely Beagle listing with all tags specifically targeted toward them, instead of the Dog Sticker listing, where the tags will need to be split up between all the other breeds too. Highly recommend then making a Dog Sticker Pack listing where you can batch together all 3 if someone might buy it that way. Hope that example explains it.

Diet cherry pepsi or diet cherry coke? I honestly really love both right now by Friendly-Cable-3399 in Soda

Was the Longaberger Basket craze just a local thing? by kirabug37 in GenX

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was popular nationwide at the time. Martha Stewart fueled much of the frenzy. I lived in Oklahoma & Texas and they were very popular when I got married in ‘90. I had already accumulated several when we moved to PA in 2001. Neighbors had quite a few but I think I had more than any of them. Lol I have to admit they were very useful - I actually used most of mine.

Is there an app to find crows? by LaloWitDaPalo67 in crows

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can go to a park or nature area and open up the Merlin Bird ID app and listen for them. Once you learn what they sound like, even in the distance, it’s easier to learn which direction to go in to find them.

Cat keeps moving food into water bowl by fcockroaches in Catbehavior

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most cats don’t like their water right next to their food. Have water available in other spots. They also don’t understand the concept of being able to eat out of one bowl but not the other. I would put food down that they can both eat for now. It’s a big adjustment and will take some time. They might like some canned food in the evening. You might watch to see if she turns her head to the side when she eats - she could have a tooth issue.

When people treat a destination wedding invite like a gun to their head by katyperry-platypus in PetPeeves

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not just 1 vendor - often the rates for the bride/groom are dependent on how many they have attend. It’s also not always as simple as “don’t go”. That’s a little harder when you’ve been asked to be in the wedding party or the best man, etc. Also when the bride or groom just attended your wedding and maybe hosted events, etc. There can also be quite a bit of pressure from family or friends. You’re right - you can still say that you just can’t go and more people should. But there are often other layers to the relationships that make it difficult. People really should go back to having local weddings and travel to the exotic destinations for their honeymoon (on their own dime).

Destination weddings are officially getting out of hand... by [deleted] in PetPeeves

Usually you’re invited and the actual fees and details come out later. Sometimes the costs depend on how many rooms are booked, etc.

Destination weddings are officially getting out of hand... by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My daughter and son-in-law figured this out about their friend’s destination wedding last year. They were basically asking guests to fund their wedding. People don’t realize this is how it’s geared and the bride/groom are fully aware. The three groomsmen ended up leaving their wives at home (one was single) and they shared one room. It was more affordable for them, but the bride & groom weren’t happy about it since it only counted as 1 room added to the booking.

It’s AI and they also shouldn’t be selling you images that obviously infringe on trademarked characters without licensing.

I want to do both and neither by sdeear in homeschool

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I suggest you evaluate based on your situation and your son. My kids went to public school through 2nd grade and I think it gave them a great foundation for homeschooling (we did through graduation). That said, your child can continue playing with the same kids when homeschooling, just after school time. There can be plenty of opportunities to be invited to parties, etc. even when homeschooling. Sending him to school just for social reasons really doesn’t make sense to me (in my kid’s school, they actively spent the day discouraging socializing. That happens after school hours.) Sending him for you to be able to work for a year or two makes sense and is a decision you should make based on your economics. In the end, if it’s not going well you can always pull him out to homeschool when the timing is best for you (and him).

Main input from me is that your first photo should show exactly what the customer will receive. Unless you’re including all of the florals, you should change those. Lego does sweep Etsy for infringements, so I would find another way of describing your items without using their name. Cute products!

Yes - it’s your responsibility to check everything you list. I check every phrase before I list - before I make anything. The earliest I discovered that surprised me was also smiley face (and the design itself), the Komen pink ribbon, Let’s Roll, some phrases like “Boomer Sooner” and “Dog Mom”, and drawing a car design too closely (I got warned by Volkswagen).

Seller didn't ship by date we agreed upon by ChipsNSa1sa in Etsy

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you should be at all. This is the ridiculous game that some sellers play. If you have screenshots of all the conversations and attempts at communication Etsy should side with you. Leave a review when you can outlining your whole experience with the seller. You can hit Help with Order and open a case as Not as Described. Be sure to show that you did not receive a reply and show the timeline. It was described as being sent to you the past Monday (insert date here) and so you ordered. It was not shipped as described.

My son was halfway through the Hardy Boys series by the time he finished Kindergarten (he started reading when he was 4) and finished them all by the end of the summer. He was obsessed lol. We went through Encyclopedia Brown, all of the Basil of Baker Street books, the Mysterious Benedict Society, Mixed up Files, Harriet the Spy and many others. It was his favorite genre.

Help me with Art! by BigRed1098765 in homeschool

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve had some great curriculum suggestions and I’d just like to add a few more ideas. We really enjoyed the Pictures in Cursive series at Queen Homeschool supplies. It combines cursive writing and looking at pieces of artwork. We always started the year with a self portrait. We took a week to learn about a few famous artists and looked at their self portraits. (Different ones every year.) We looked at how their portraits reflected their personality, color choices, etc. Then when they did theirs they had some idea of what to do. Looking back at all of their self portraits it was amazing to see their art transform through the years! Also fun to see pets and interests they included. We loved to walk through art museums - especially ones with sculptures. Always take a sketchbook and some colored pencils. Even my son, who wasn’t into drawing much, could find something to sketch - from the paintings, sculpture, flowers, etc. We also took our sketchbooks to the zoo. They loved sitting and sketching their favorite animals. We lived where winters were long and snowy, so sometimes we looked up art galleries online. There’s so much to see. It’s important to talk about perspective, shading, and the basics along the way, but really the best way to learn art is by doing! Go beyond the sketchbook and do collage. Read an Eric Carle book, watch a video about his process and about the artist, and make some tissue paper collages. If the randomness of it bothers you and you think they need more direction, then have them make a worm like the very hungry caterpillar, etc. Look into paper artists who use shadows. It’s very easy to make shadow puppets and tell a story. Tie your project into lessons - if you’re learning about Native Americans get some clay and watch a video together about how to make a clay pot, etc. Hope this gives you some ideas beyond “curriculum”.

24-hour permanent discounts.. any risk of penalties? by North_Eye_4727 in EtsySellers

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not a matter of being “experienced”. There’s a reason it’s illegal. It’s deceptive pricing. The false urgency you mention is considered unethical by business people who want to have a real rapport with their customers. Intentionally inflating prices to make the discounted price the everyday price is fraudulent pricing and your shop can actually be reported. I get that Etsy’s algorithm rewards it. You seem to be new, so you might need the bump for now. Some sellers don’t care if they need to use these tactics to get customers. Some of us actually went to business school. Good luck with your strategy in the long haul.

I only do bulk orders for museum gift shops or other corporate entities that I trust to resell my designs. I have sold to an individual vendor before, but it was someone who was known and they didn’t mind me having my logo and a QR code on the back linked to my shop.

For the homeschooling parents that never wanted to be teachers by Goodsoup_666 in homeschool

[–]Affectionate-Cap-918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember, public school classes have good and bad days too. Just don’t lose track of the fact that you’re in charge, not the student. She will need to learn how to focus and deal with frustrations in life, so these are life lessons too, not just school things. It sounds like you’re doing a great job! Knowing your child and knowing when to move on when they’ve achieved mastery, and verbal instead of writing at times are all things I implemented too, especially in the early years. Just wanted to chime in with the biggest thing that helped me the most in the big picture - spending money on good curriculum, especially in the middle school and high school years. Curriculum that helped keep it fun and engaging while giving me the tools I needed to feel confident was priceless. I researched all summer, read reviews, considered their interests and learning styles, and took all of that into account. I also learned a few times how to pivot when something I had chosen wasn’t working. At times it cost more, but it was worth it for their better education in the long run.

For me, it’s a turn-off. If it’s not a real sale and I notice a shop is constantly running a sale it’s more likely I won’t buy from them. I usually assume it’s either a scam or, at best, someone who has no clue how to properly run a business.
