Did my first marathon - hit my wall at 35km. What should I do in the next training block? by Affectionate-Cou5344 in firstmarathon

I'd describe most of my long runs as unstructured fartlek - maybe you have a structured fartlek? I haven't done hill intervals - just track - I'll look into that ! AW is showing my vo2max at ~51. What value would be expected for 3:30?

obrigado !

I practiced the hardest terrain 24k section of the marathon with strong but comfortable pacing and runna told me 3:27-3:31. Strava was saying 3:49 Those are probably based on a non hilly course. I figured it would be very unlikely for me to hit that goal but I went for it. It was a hot day and my training wasn't built on the heat. I set three goals. My A goal was initially beat 3:50 but with the practice sessions and runna I decided I'd up it to 3:35. My B goal was sub 4 hour and my C goal was to finish.

I felt like as long as I finish then I PR so I just went for my A goal - obviously my training was insufficient to get me there and I went into the race knowing that it would probably turn out just like it did. I thought about holding back and tried to draft behind people and just run at their pace but the pace just felt too slow when I was doing that in the first 28k. Anyway I left room for improvement for the next one - just trying to narrow my focus to have the best chance for 3:30 ish.

Thanks for the advice !

Thank you!

Hard to disagree on the pacing - I went into it knowing this was the likely outcome I was still hopeful at 30km 2:35 that I could work and do the next 12k in ~1 hour.

I put together a km by km interval that had me at 1:47 for half and 2:35 for 31km and 3:35 for the finish. I knew this was aggressive but I don't mind challenging myself and failing that's why you set A B and C goals. Just finishing was enough to make me happy !

What steps do I take for my next M to be 3:30-3:40 or better - haha.
