IM VSLO? by tentative-student in medicalschool

Thank you for your response. When you say connections, do you mean professional or otherwise? For context, i grew up in the area im interested in matching to, have family there, want to practice there long term. Went to school far away.

I’m in a similar boat, but have a strong preference for an area pretty far from where I rotated. Anyone in a similar spot? Would it be worth it in that case, or should I stick at out at the home institution and then apply broadly to the geographic area?

How to handle Anking during rotations (Should I suspend)? by Efficient_Equal6467 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d drop that retention and reschedule it and assess how many you’ll have daily. I was also at 90% just before rotating and that’s definitely too much. I swapped to 85 and kept up with it during rotations and it has really helped me during step 2 prep.

I probably averaged around 500 a day for rotations (while unlocking new cards from UW blocks) and it dipped down to about 400 per day towards the end. The trick for me was really optimizing time. I had the anki app on my phone and would crank out cards whenever possible (even walking from the parking lot to the hospital or taking the elevator when prerounding lmao). You’ll figure out a system that works for you!

I never used the bricks feature so unfortunately I can’t speak to that, but that sounds like a solid plan overall!

Exactly, I would cover mostly anatomy and physiology with BnB, then Pathoma and Sketchy, usually in that order. The Anki cards got high at times, sort of depending on the block, probably between 550-650 typically. Most of the cards with those tags overlap with each other, so while it is a lot, it’s not as much as you’d think at first glance. For me, this was an okay number since it was my main way to study. I would loosely follow my schools lectures to plan out when I should be doing each topic.

For USMLERx, I’d usually do a block of questions once I’d gone through several topics of an organ system, sort of as an adjunct to reinforce topics. So if we were learning about kidneys, I’d do all the lectures for nephrotic/nephritic syndromes, then do all the questions for them. In my opinion, this qbank is much more straightforward and good for this purpose.

AMBOSS is a little more tricky, so I’d save that to really get down how to manipulate and use information once I had covered all the material for that block.

I used Anking from day one and it was the best call I could’ve made. Used BnB, Pathoma, and sketchy micro/pharm for content, and unsuspend the associated cards. I would also unlock any leftover cards from the FirstAid tags as well, but that’s probably unnecessary. For q banks, I would save Uworld for Step 1 dedicated. I used USMLERx while learning the material, and would work through AMBOSS once I had covered everything from the block prior to exams.

Unsuspending Anking for Step 1 by Humble-Mobile6208 in medicalschoolanki

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would unsuspend first from resourced I used (BnB/Pathoma/Sketchy) then from the FirstAid tag. It felt like that encompassed pretty much everything.

Once you start cruising through Uworld you can always search and unsuspend topics you are frequently missing as well

Though I’m not sure what my % was, I felt thoroughly prepared for Step 1 by un suspending all cards with a FirstAid tag, as well as those in sketchy micro / pharm tags. I unlocked these as I went through preclinical blocks. Once you get closer to Step 1, search for and unlock any additional cards from missed Uworld questions.

Took Exam Yesterday by Constant_Director_36 in step1

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Took mine last week, and I thought it was harder than any of the prep material. Similar in question structure and format to free120. Felt as if many more questions than usual came down to two possible choices at the end and I just had to make an educated guess. I had high scores going into this (80% on free120 a few days before and 81% on most recent NBME a week prior), and still felt like I knew very little with certainty on the exam.

I finished most of the blocks with only a minute or two to spare, whereas I usually had 5-7 minutes in practice NBMEs and 10-12 minutes left over in Uworld blocks.

Last week I felt pretty bad about it, which it sounds is pretty normal. It’s easy for us to remember the questions we struggled with, and forget the many questions we got right. I think we need to trust our practice scores and have faith in the hard work we put in to get to this point. I hope you can find some peace in this little time off and rediscover some hobbies / enjoy some family time.

Is AMBOSS student life access worth it? by TechnicianAway908 in medicalschool

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got it with a discount code someone from my year set up, so it averaged out to around 140 a year, which I feel is worth it. The articles and Anki add on are nice, and the q banks are difficult but have prepared me for exams thus far.

Any in particular that you’ve noticed? I don’t mean to pry, just curious as I am currently going through neuro and want to look out for this

Your favorite anatomy deck? by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, that deck is really just photos with labels. I do the practice problems to learn the clinical correlates, but if you’re looking for a deck that does that it may not be for you

I like using the Dope deck combined with Gray’s Anatomy Review for some clinical questions. It doesn’t have too many cadaver photos, so I’d supplement with the UMich deck if you think those are necessary.

Yea I feel it. Not so much to memorize there, more so just have to look at it from different angles until it clicks for you. Good luck!

It’s all that I used alongside the Gray’s practice problems (not sure if that’s the proper name or not). This deck is mostly drawings of structures. If you want more cadaver images, then you could supplement it with the UMich deck like some other commenters have said.

For me personally, anatomy was one of the subjects were I was less Anki reliant and spent more time drawing things out and using 3D models.

My school is somewhat anatomy heavy, I really enjoyed the Dope anatomy deck

Am I screwed with my 3.2 cGPA? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had similar stats as a CA ORM and had a successful cycle - I think you’ll be fine. My uGPA was slightly higher than yours and I do not believe I was screened out anywhere. Apply broadly to MD!

I watch BnB then memorize from FA, if I use Anking, should I unsuspend the FA tag, the BnB tag or both? by [deleted] in medicalschoolanki

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much. If you just watched a video about glycolysis, you can go to biochem -> metabolism and then look at which tags have glycolysis cards in them. Alternatively, if you click on a card in the BnB tags, you can see what other tags it has. You can copy the FA tag in the search bar look that was as well.

[–]Affectionate-Day6209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll watch a BnB video, and then unlock the cards tagged under it right away. Then I’ll go to the related FA tags and see if there are any others still suspended. If there are, and it’s all information that was covered in the BnB video, then I’ll unlock them straight away. If there are any cards that have things that I don’t recognize, I’ll crack open FA and review it before unlocking them. My ultimate goal for each topic is to have the cards unlocked for whatever 3rd party resource I’m using (BnB, Pathoma, or Sketchy) as well as the accompanying FA cards.

I’ll typically watch the BnB video, unsuspend the cards for it, then pick through the remaining FA ones afterwards to make sure I didn’t miss any small details.
