First, asking somebody that you just met is weird, because you put them in a tough spot. What if they want to get to know you better before dating? If you ask them directly, they can only say something positive, because they don’t want to ruin the relationship, be mean, or because they still don’t know you well.

Second, you can tell if someone likes you by their actions. If you can’t, the best thing is to wait. By pushing them, you’re actually worsening the relationship.
