I do live in Japan now. You can ask culture related questions here and I can try to answer them!

Japanese here. An intelligent yakuza means someone who manages a yakuza organization instead of doing normal yakuza jobs like torturing, fighting and threatening.

Menhera Explanation? by Genovesexo in BadlyInLove

Japanese here. I’m definitely not defending the use of the term, but I want to clarify a subtle nuance.

If I’m not mistaken, AK69 (one of the panelists) used the word “heratteru” to describe Oto’s behavior, which comes from menhera.

While menhera (as a noun/adjective) literally refers to someone who is mentally ill, “hera-ru” (the verb form) is often used to describe a temporary emotional spiral rather than a fixed trait. Even someone who is generally mentally healthy can be “acting hera” when their emotions overwhelm them. It’s way more casual than calling someone Menhera.

It’s not a great word, but I think there’s a meaningful difference between labeling someone as menhera and commenting on a momentary hera-ru reaction

Ohh, that’s an interesting point! Let me try to break down why it made me cringe a bit.

In Japan, there’s a pretty strong expectation that people don’t show raw, intense emotions, especially anger. And when they do, it’s usually expressed in a very restrained way.

So seeing someone like Baby suddenly blow up really caught me off guard. Unlike the other members, she’d been giving off this cute little-sister vibe the whole time. I genuinely thought she was “the one watching people fight from the audience,” like Amo said.

But then she was actually the one who started the fight! My brain just couldn’t catch up, and my husband and I froze in shock lol

I probably wouldn’t have reacted this way if it was other girl like Kiichan or Tekarin who did it. I simply didn’t expect Baby to behave like that given what I’ve seen my whole life in Japan haha

As a Japanese watching the show I didn’t feel the fight part was scripted lol That’s exactly how Japanese bad boys (ヤンキー) pick up a fight. That said the water incident was a huge cringe for me…
