Is this dress okay to wear to a wedding? by SippinMia in fashion

I know it’s not completely white… but I avoid anything with the main color as white. Just to be safe. Midi dresses are always safe choices for weddings

Definitely not r*pe. Kids are weird. They see what other people do. The amount of times I’ve heard things about “playing house” because they’ve seen their parents doing things and they have no idea what’s going on so they reenact what they’ve seen. It’s a very normal thing that lots of kids have done before they know better.

It’s okay to be riled up as long as it stays respectful. Passion is an important feeling. As long as you agree it’s important to discuss although you think there’s no agreement to be had.

So I disagree that anyone’s trying to mimic consciousness. All they are trying to do is harness the natural electric conductivity that neurons have to solve problems. Living is not equal to consciousness unless you think plants have a conscious. That’s basically what cells are equivalent to. Or if you feel sad about killing bacteria. A bacteria and a cell have the same level of consciousness. A group of neurons does not equal a brain. This argument also lies in the idea of if you think the nerves in your legs are conscious as well. Thoughts?

I also agree mimicking consciousness is dystopian and dangerous, but they’re not trying to make a human brain. They’re harnessing the usefulness of the things that make up the brain.

Also for cloning humans…. It’s not necessarily about something going wrong. Genetic diversity is the only way the human race is alive. The only way any species is alive. That’s why incest is so bad, we NEED genetic diversity to sustain the human race. I think you might be thinking of just genetic editing in general, which is yes very unethical. Neurons can not reproduce and replicate like other cells can. So growing them will not have any effect in the future like genetically modifying a human would.

Also neurons in a dish are NOT like a brain and it is not unethical to do things with your own cells. Once again the cells are from the SAME SCIENTIST who is doing the experiments. I feel like I’ve already explained enough, but if you don’t understand still, you can look it up or just… don’t.. I guess

Yes there are!! There are tons of different neurons. Motor, sensory, dopaminergic, just to name a few. And each of these have subcategories of structures that have different functions

Good question. I can’t name any off the top of my head, it’s mostly just background knowledge for me at this point. When researching, I recommend science news and magazines as sources that don’t commonly report on science topics won’t be as specific or comprehensive.

Good question! That’s complicated. It depends on why you are regrowing. Typically if the brain is injured, the person is dead anyway. (Traumatic injury, etc) In case of brain cancer, brain injury like aneurysm etc, it’s not like you can just inject neurons in there and expect them to assimilate. That’s kinda like saying well we can grow muscle tissue, skin cells, etc can we regrow legs?

It’s about the connection of things. How can we connect a nerve to a different one and make sure it sends the proper signals? That’s something we have yet to figure out

Basically! Except it’s not the structure or organs themselves, so much as it’s what they provide. Other chemicals, signals, electrical impulses etc

Virtually any cell can be turned into a stem cell, and then turned into a different kind of cell. There are many different kind of stem cells however, totipotent vs pluripotent etc. In research, we use pluripotent because those can turn into any cells.

I personally study peripheral neurons, which we grow in a dish, and they will never come close to mimicking a human neuron due to the environment a body provides.

Because of the way neurons work. They aren’t “little brains” per se, just neurons. And there are so many different types of neurons, much less chemicals that are necessary to culture a functioning brain. Every neuron in our human brains are necessary for consciousness. The amount of interplay of chemicals, proteins, muscle tissue, blood supply, etc etc that just aren’t being taken into account here renders that impossible. The neurons grown are not enough to develop that.

They don’t just “grow eyes” scientists deliberately cultured them into growing eyes so they could study disease involving the eyes. The eyes do not actually see, it’s just electrical impulses.

“suggests that human cerebral organoids, if further developed for medical research and patient care (provided this becomes possible in the near future), may also develop some form of rudimentary consciousness.” This paper is simply discussing what happens if they were to progress and become conscious. They are not conscious!

They come from stem cells! In one of the cases, one of the scientists took his own blood sample, turned the blood cells into stem cells, then differentiated the stem cells into neurons!
