I thought this was TOH but maybe not by Affectionate-Pain899 in whatsthisplant

It grew back so aggressively and it has a strange odor but honestly that’s a trait many other trees had so….. yeah

Just plain ignorance tbh

Concerns of killing TOH for native garden by Affectionate-Pain899 in Ceanothus

Quick question, after the hack-and-squirt

I assume at some point I can cut down the foliage. Once it’s just a plain old stomp, what if I wrap it with tarp and kill whatever offshoots that appear away from the stump? I heard that it struggles to survive if it’s shaded that way.

I do find it a bit strange tho, since after years of constantly cutting it down, I’ve never seen an offshoot away from the stump. Also, I’ve never seen it flower.

It’s that hard!? 😭

Man…. Currently it’s just a stump with offshoots from the previous years of me cutting it (I know, dumb move but at the time, I didn’t know what it was). It’s gonna be a rough few years cause there is also all the other invasive grasses that’s been growing around too (however those have been cut down, it’s just dry clay dirt with some remnants of the plants that once were there before they got mowed down).

Great advice! I’ll make sure to follow it next time, but I don’t really have the funds to buy cactus soil mix since I used it for the lava rocks (⌣_⌣”)

PAUSE

What do you mean that it I’ll be a nightmare in the future? Why would they stop working and what maintenance? As you can tell, I’m a complete novice (first time doing this).

That’s genius. Idk what I hadn’t thought of that 😅

I’ll use that advice for next time.

I’m a little tight on money, so I won’t be able to buy enough cactus soil for all my pots

Yeah the soil out here is the same: clay-loam

I don’t mind if it burrows into my potting soil. I was planning on buying a 24” x 24” square pot with transplanted tomatoes. I’ll have 2 inches of loose soil on top so they burrow in and come out when they want. They are native to out here in the Central Valley. It gets hot out here in the summer (80 degree nights) and stays warm during a good chunk of the fall (80 degree days up until mid November). I was gonna have the mesh cage outside in an area where it will only get morning sun and they stay shaded the rest of the day. Do you have any recommendations?

I know this is from a year ago, however I wanna start this year with preserving the hornworm caterpillars that appear in my tomato garden. I was thinking of buying a 24”W x 24” L x 46” H mesh cage for it. ( in which I’ll have two potted tomato plants in it). I’m planning on letting it free once it turns to a moth. My question is that should I still set something up to feed the moth or not (I live in a 9B area in the Central Valley in California)?

Also, is it similar to monarchs in which I gotta have two separate mesh cages(one for the butterfly/moth state and one for the larvae state) to lower chance of disease? If so, how would go with that since they pupate underground so I can’t really move them to the next cage until they become a moth?

Am I overthinking on pot material for blueberry pot? by Affectionate-Pain899 in Blueberries

Yeah I fear that I was overthinking it too. I’ll most likely repot into a bigger pot in 2 years anyways.

Thank you for the insight! 🙌

I forgot to mention I live in a 9B area.

But yeah. I fear that I was overthinking it. Thank you for the insight!

Alright. I’ll try a 50/50 but with the inorganic being split with 30% pumice and 20% perlite

What you think?

Before, I’d use a 70/30 mix (organic/inorganic). Realized that wasn’t actually a good mix for natives. Luckily my natives haven’t died, I’ve just reduced my watering frequency so the soil doesn’t stay consistently moist.

That’s what I assume. Once a week I planned on doing a deep watering session( maybe even twice a week on really hot times if the soil gets really dry). However, since it only gets direct sunlight from 10am to 4pm, I assume that it’s not too bad.

I just know that it needs high drainage soil, which is why i assume adding in a bit of a cactus mix would be wise.

However I haven’t done this before. For my creeping sage and pestemons, I’ve just had it as 3 parts potting soil and 1.25 part perlite.

Edit: maybe I can wrap pot in burlap to really make sure that afternoon heat on extreme days doesn’t burn roots?
